Does Tillamook Yogurt Have Probiotics

Which Yogurt Have Probiotics

The Best Probiotic Food Is Definitely NOT Yogurt

There are many yogurts on the market that claim to have probiotics, but not all of them are created equal. Probiotics are live bacteria that are beneficial for gut health, and they can be found in some fermented foods like yogurt.

When choosing a yogurt, look for one that contains live and active cultures, which indicates that it has probiotics. You can also check the label to see how many live cultures are in each serving.

The more live cultures, the more probiotics. Some of the best yogurts for probiotics are plain, unsweetened yogurt, kefir, and Greek yogurt. These yogurts contain the most live and active cultures, and theyre also lower in sugar.

According to scientific research, the type of yogurt with the most probiotics is the kind that is made from raw milk. This is because raw milk contains more of the beneficial bacteria that are known as probiotics.

If youre looking for a probiotic yogurt with a little more flavor, look for ones that are flavored with fruit or honey. Just be sure to check the label to make sure they dont have too much sugar.

    Which Is The Best

Probiotics are the most important ingredient to look at when considering how yogurt can best maintain a healthy gut. This fact makes kefir the best yogurt option to help maintain a healthy gut. However, for traditionalists who may not consider kefir to be part of the yogurt family, the next best option would be regular yogurt as it has the next highest number of probiotics. If you do want to eat regular yogurt for gut health, make sure you’re looking for a brand that has the lowest amount of added sugaraim for less than 10 grams per cup.

    Do All Yoghurts Have Probiotics

The Science of Yogurt: Why the Best Yogurt is Homemade | What’s Eating Dan?

All yoghurt contains live bacterial cultures, which ferment milk to make yoghurt, but only some types of yoghurt have added probiotics .

The addition of live bacterial cultures to milk results in fermentation, where the lactose in milk is converted to lactic acid which sets the yoghurt. Traditional bacterial strains used to make yoghurt are Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies bulgaricus.

In addition to these âstarter culturesâ, some yoghurts also contain added probiotics the most common species being Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. When consumed in adequate amounts, probiotics have been shown to provide a benefit to overall health.

Probiotic dosages are measured in CFUs . To make sure youâre consuming enough probiotic, go for a yoghurt that contains at least 108 CFU per serve.1

Specific strains of probiotics, such as the well researched Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG , have shown positive health effects in the digestive system, particularly on lactose intolerance, immunity, allergies and inflammatory bowel disease.2,3,4 Health benefits of probiotics are unique to the specific strain, so when youâre choosing a yoghurt with added probiotics look at the type of probiotic strain listed on the food label and speak to an Accredited Practising Dietitian for individual advice.

    Active Cultures Or Not

Theoretically, all yogurt SHOULD have probiotics as its made by adding bacterial colonies to milk to ferment the lactose and form lactic acid. The milk is pasteurized BEFORE adding the bacterial colonies, as the heat of pasteurization would destroy them. Once formed, the lactic acid thickens the milk and gives yogurt its thick, creamy consistency. Lactic acid also gives the yogurt its characteristic tangy taste. Yogurt is arguably one of the oldest fermented foods in existence.

So, why wouldnt all yogurt contain active probiotic cultures? If yogurt is heat processed after fermentation, it destroys some the healthy bacteria, along with the health benefits. Some manufacturers add probiotic organisms into yogurt after its heat treated to make up for the loss. Some even add some extra probiotic bacteria to compensate for the loss of viable bacteria due to storage.

Still, if yogurt is heat processed after fermentation, the yogurt may still have few active cultures and how would you know? The National Yogurt Association helps to solve this problem by designing a seal called the Live and Active Cultures seal. Manufacturers can place this seal on yogurt if the yogurt contains at least 100 million cultures at the time it was manufactured. Frozen yogurt must contain at least 10 million cultures to bear the seal.

    Health Benefits Of Probiotics

Our bodies contain multitudes of bacteria, carrying strains that are both good and bad. The role of probiotics, which are live microorganisms, is to protect the body against the “bad” bacteria. The strains of bacteria most commonly found in yogurt are Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus.

    Video of the Day

According to Harvard Health Publishing, probiotics not only improve immune functioning, but also boost digestion and the absorption of nutrients. Furthermore, probiotics can offset a gut bacteria imbalance triggered by antibiotics, which can kill beneficial bacteria along with the harmful bacteria.

National Institutes of Health explains that probiotics have been researched for the treatment of certain health conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, certain types of diarrhea, obesity and a type of eczema called atopic dermatitis. Other conditions that have been studied in relation to probiotics, include ulcerative colitis, colic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Someone with one of the mentioned conditions may be advised to take probiotics, though health experts neither recommend nor advise against probiotics for healthy individuals.
