Probiotics And Eczema In Babies

Probiotics For Toddler Diarrhoea

Should You Give Your Newborn Probiotics?

Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG is one of the best probiotics for kids. Its no surprise that its often featured as one of the top 10 probiotics for kids.

Rhamnosus GG, in particular, has been very widely studied through clinical trials. This strain was first discovered by two scientists in 1985. The brand Culturelle, for example, contains rhamnosus GG and is one of the good probiotics for kids.

Whats unique about rhamnosus GG is that it can bind to the gut wall. This stops other pathogens from binding and growing. This ultimately helps prevent or reduce the risk of intestinal infection.

This makes it an excellent daily probiotic for children. Clostridium difficile or C.difficile, for example, is a type of bacterial infection that causes diarrhoea in children.

For children with this type of acute diarrhoea, Rhamnosus GGcould be beneficial. Unfortunately, the scientific evidence wasnt robust enough for it to be routinely recommended during infectious diarrhoea. Instead, a yeast called Saccharomyces boulardiisounds promising.

The evidence for supplementing with rhamnosus GG is stronger in children with rotavirus and other types of infectious diarrhoea. It was particularly helpful in reducing repeated episodes. The main downside of the research is the small patient numbers.

Which Probiotics Strains Should I Choose

The two strains of bacteria that are found to be beneficial based on research include Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium.

Below is a brief summary of which bacteria strains help eczema. Sources are provided to research abstracts on Pubmed.

Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5, Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12, and L. rhamnosus were consumed through milk products by Norwegian mothers. There is evidence showing that these strains reduced the babies risk of developing atopic dermatitis if the mothers consumed these probiotics during pregnancy.

Bifidobacterium breve M-16V and Bifidobacterium longum BB536 were also found to possibly decrease the number of atopic dermatitis in infants. This study was done in the Japanese population.

Lactobacillus , Lactobacillus fermentum , and a probiotic mixture reduced SCORAD values in children with AD. On the other hand, LGG and Lactobacillus plantarum showed no effect in children with AD for this particular study.

Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 and Bifidobacterium lactis UABLA-12 helped improve eczema in children with moderate-to-severe AD.

LPCJLP 133, Lactobacillus paracasei, and LF helped improve eczema

Can Probiotics Help Eczema In Babies And Children Alternative Remedies #4

Live yoghurt is a great source of probiotics. However only two strains, Lactobacillus paracasei and Lactobacillus fermentum, have been shown to reduce eczema symptoms. Other strains of probiotics generate histamines which can aggravate eczema.

Eczema is one of those horrible conditions where there is no single treatment that works for everybody.

Annoying as it is, you will probably have to try lots of different things ruling out particular foods, washing powders, and fabric types before you find the best way to prevent or alleviate the symptoms of eczema.

Thats why it is helpful to know of all possible preventions, remedies and treatments in order to see what works for your child.

If, like many parents, youre constantly researching possible treatments for eczema, youll probably be aware of certain alternative remedies like Aloe Vera which do seem to work for some children.

Along the same lines, there has been much discussion about the potential benefit of probiotics in treating eczema.

Unlike many alternative remedies, there is ongoing scientific research into the effectiveness of probiotics in treating eczema.

First Steps To Take In Treating Baby Eczema

To answer the question directly, yes, there are many things you can do to get rid of your babys eczema permanently. The first thing you should do is to go to a dermatologist and get a diagnosis for your baby. They will be able to tell whether your babys eczema is just dry skin or if its because of an underlying condition that needs more attention.

Its also important that you change the products you use on your child to avoid making their skin worse. If you have been using products on your baby for a long time, it is best to slowly transition from the old products to new ones.

Once you get a diagnosis and make any changes in your childs environment, you can begin giving them probiotics every day. Its easy to find supplements at most major grocery stores or online that will work.

Its also important to remember that different strains will work for different people so it is vital to do some research on the internet and find out which ones are best for your child. Once you get one of these, make sure to give them more healthy foods like fruits and vegetables while avoiding dairy products or food with too much sugar in it.

The Study Found That Probiotics Improved Symptoms In Children With Eczema

Moreover, the number of blood eosinophils decreased as the disease activity increased. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, the researchers discovered that probiotics could improve eczema symptoms. However, these studies do not yet show a definitive cure for the disorder.

The study, conducted on healthy children and adults, concluded that probiotics did not improve the condition of the affected area. The patients did experience reduced scratching, oozing, and dryness. Overall, the study showed improvements in quality of life and the activities of those with eczema. The studys findings also show that the probiotics did not affect the disease in atopic children.

The study involved participants of different ages and skin conditions. In general, the participants with eczema experienced reduced oozing and scratching of the affected area. In addition, they experienced improved sleep and a higher quality of life and were less likely to suffer from the condition.

In addition, their overall quality of life and the activities they engaged in were also improved. The study further suggested that probiotics might benefit eczema symptoms, although this has not been proven in practice.

Aged and fermented foods are high in histamine.

This is because many bacteria have a knack for creating histamine. And while this isnt true for all bacteria, youll find that many probiotic strains will contribute to histamine overload.

How The Intervention Might Work

Rationale for using probiotics to treat eczema

The intestinal microflora is a large collection of microorganisms that live in the human intestine and confer intestinal, immune, and nutritional benefits on the host. The composition of the intestinal microflora has been found to be different in those with eczema, and such differences may precede the development of active eczema. One consistent finding in relevant studies is a reduced proportion of Bifidobacteria species in the faeces of infants with eczema , as well as in older children and young adults with atopic dermatitis . In the latter study, lower numbers of Bifidobacteria species also correlated with greater severity of the disease. Later studies have shown that low microbial diversity in the neonatal period is associated with the development of eczema in the first year of life , eczema with atopy in the first two years of life , and IgEassociated eczema in the first 18 months . Another study found that patients with atopic dermatitis had increased numbers of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii associated with low levels of shortchain fatty acids, possibly leading to aberrant Thelper type 2 cell responses .

Probiotics are widely consumed worldwide in the form of fermented milk, and they are potentially a cheap and accessible treatment for eczema. Although all probiotics have certain properties in common , the clinical and laboratory effects of probiotics can vary markedly between species .

How Can I Reduce The Impact Eczema Has On My Life

Although eczema can be a difficult condition to live with, it is important not to let eczema rule your life. Eczema is often seen in people with a personal or family history of allergies such as hay fever or food intolerances. It is these immune imbalances that must be addressed when looking at the treatment of eczema.

One factor that plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of a well-functioning immune system is a healthy balance of good bacteria within the gut. Good bacteria, also known as probiotics, inhabit the bowel and are responsible for maintaining optimal digestive function, supporting immune function and improving general health and wellbeing. Supplementing with probiotics can help to enhance the level of good bacteria within the gut and restore balance if the microbiome is disturbed.

First Of All What Are Probiotics

They are good bacteria that go to your gut and help improve digestive and immune function. Some people may also experience other health benefits such as improvement in allergy symptoms, cholesterol, irritable bowel syndrome, infectious diarrhea. In our case, we are concerned about whether it benefits eczema symptoms.

Common bacteria that are used as probiotics include:

  • Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Escherichia, and Bacillus

There is also something called prebiotic, which are fuel to help probiotics to keep going. They are usually complex carbohydrates such as inulin and other fructo-oligosaccharides.

The benefits of probiotics depend on the species and strain used. I will discuss in more detail about different strains later in this article.

Why Probiotics For Eczema In Children Are Worth Trying

Probiotics for Eczema in Babies

By Sabra Way

Probiotics often come up when discussing possible supplements to use for eczema. The question is what are the best probiotics for eczema? When do you use them and how will they help? In many previous studies involving atopic dermatitis, the probiotics were given to pregnant mothers and then continued in the infant after birth. Results were great, but what if a child didnt receive probiotics inutero? Will probiotics given only after birth help a childs eczema? Because probiotic strains have different effects, the results have been variable. However, in one new study, the benefits of probiotics for eczema in children has finally been documented. In this study, two probiotic strains were either given singly or in combination and tested against a placebo in children 1-18 years of age with moderate atopic dermatitis. After three months, eczema symptoms in the probiotic groups were reduced, and this effect remained for another month without probiotic supplementation. The probiotic group also had improved quality of life measuring things like sleep, symptoms, feelings and activities affected by their skin. Atopic dermatitis improved especially in children younger than age 12, who had breastfed longer than six months.

    Supplement With Vitamin D

In children and adolescents, studies have shown that those who suffer from eczema were more likely to have low levels of Vitamin D. In addition to increasing sun exposure, be sure to include vitamin D rich foods in your diet including sardines, eggs, and salmon.

We often recommend a high-quality vitamin D supplement to help boost your intake, especially during flares. Work with your provider for a personalized plan and dosage instructions.

Probiotics For The Prevention Of Pediatric Eczema

There are also studies demonstrating that probiotic support is ineffective in prevention of the development of eczema. In a study by Allen et al24 with women at 36 weeks gestation and their children , incidence of eczema was investigated at 2 years in infants who had received the probiotic daily and in those who received placebo. Use of probiotics was found not to prevent the development of eczema during the study. In that study, probiotics were found to decrease incidence of food allergy in early childhood as an indirect effect. There are interesting results in the evaluations carried out according to the type of probiotics. For example, according to a meta-analysis, use of Lactobacilli during pregnancy was stated to prevent atopic eczema in children between 2 and 7 years old, but a mixture of various bacterial strains did not affect the development of eczema.25

The role of probiotics in the prevention of atopic eczema is yet to be clarified. Evidence presented by the studies suggesting that probiotics may prevent pediatric eczema is not strong enough. A positive effect, if any, may be related with onset time, dose, duration, and use of specific probiotics. Support for this result with further research would be helpful in elimination of the limited uncertainties in the use of probiotics.

    Gut Microbiome And Eczema

Understanding the direct correlation between the gut microbiome and eczema is being researched more and more nowadays.

The number of people with allergies has increased dramatically in the UK over the past 50 years and 40% of children now develop allergic conditions such as eczema, asthma, and rhinitis . Whilst the conditions often persist through life, most allergies develop in the first two years of life, particularly during the first six months following birth.

Infant eczema involves inflamed red patches on your babys skin and can be uncomfortable and distressing for both babies and parents.

And, if children are diagnosed with atopic eczema by two years of age, they have up to an 80% chance of developing asthma by age 12 and higher risks of rhinitis.

There are many reasons suggested for why eczema develops and numerous treatments suggested to ease the symptoms, but experts now agree that exposure to sufficient amounts of good bacteria during the first weeks of life can help to reduce the risk of allergy development generally and the risk of eczema specifically.

They also experienced a decrease in oozing and scratching of their skin. The study suggested that probiotics could be effective against eczema symptoms, although more research is needed to support this claim. This systematic review examined twenty-eight studies on probiotics for eczema and concluded that the treatment successfully reduced itching, redness, dryness, and inflammation.

In a randomized controlled trial conducted with infants who had been diagnosed with eczema using the SCORAD measurement system, researchers gave half of the participants Lactobacillus rhamnosus and the other half a placebo for six weeks. The group that received probiotic supplements experienced a more significant reduction in SCORAD scores than the group that did not receive them.

In another study, researchers gave participants Lactobacillus rhamnosus and looked at how it affected their eczema symptoms. They concluded that the probiotics reduced redness and itching of the affected area and improved sleep and overall quality of life.

This study suggested that Lactobacillus may reduce inflammation in atopic dermatitis or eczema. In addition, they may improve skin hydration and help protect against oxidative damage.

An American study first examined the effects of several strains of bacteria on eczema. They concluded that Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain GG decreased the eczema symptoms of children given probiotics for six months.

    What Are Probiotic Supplements

Aside from food, probiotics are available in various forms including powder, capsules, gel caps, tablets, pills.

Homayoni et al in 2016 looked at multiple studies of various strains in food and supplements to see how they compared as vehicles for delivering probiotics. Although they did not perform statistical analyses, they found that there were many beneficial effects from probiotics whether it was delivered via food or supplement.

In general, people are always recommended to get their nutrition, vitamins, and minerals through food. Its not always easy, especially with young children and infants who cannot consume whole food yet. Personally, I started using Probonix since my babys first month of life. This brand has all the probiotics that research shows are beneficial and high number of bacteria, approximately 45 billion CFU.

It Sounds As If Theres Lots Of Research Going On In This Area

Yes its really fascinating to understand better how Staph aureus causes flares. Thats one of my research groups areas of interest. At this stage, were still trying to understand, at the molecular level, how the bacteria make the eczema so much worse. Weve known the link for decades, but we dont exactly know how it happens, and this might be quite useful in terms of new therapies for people who are particularly prone to skin infections perhaps because of imbalances in their skin biome.
