Probiotic supplements generally contain one or several different strains or types of bacteria.

There are hundreds of different bacterial strains found in the human body. Each of these has a specific function.

Researchers are still trying to determine the purpose of each strain through the Human Microbiome Project. But, since there are so many, this is going to take a very long time.

There are seven main groups of probiotics commonly found in supplements. These may include Bacillus, Escherichia, Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, Saccharomyces, Bifidobacterium, and Streptococcus.

Each of these is a genus of bacteria, but then they are further divided into species and strains.
