Best Probiotics For Mast Cell Activation Disorder

Starting At The Beginning: What Are Mast Cells

MCAS – Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, Candida, Respiratory Diseases & Diabetes

Mast cells are sentinels of the immune system, a type of white blood cell that helps control the immune processes in the body. They are called resident immune cells because they reside in tissues and not in our bloodstream. And they reside in tissues all over the body, from the connective tissue, to the endothelial cells, to the epithelial cells, and even in the brain.

Mast cells are immune system cells that live in the bone marrow and in body tissues, internal and external, such as the gastrointestinal tract, the lining of the airway, and the skin. Everyone has mast cells in their body, and they play many complex and critical roles in keeping us healthy. The positive roles that they play include protecting us from infection, and helping our body by participating in the inflammatory process. However, mast cells are also involved in allergic reactions, from the tiny swelling that appears after a mosquito bite to a life threatening, full-blown anaphylaxis.

-The Mastocytosis Society of the United States .

Theyre important we need them! but as with many conditions out there when they get out of balance, things go awry.

When our mast cells are hyperactive, they can lead to problems and symptoms. Since the mast cells reside all over the body, those symptoms are often systemic. And since each of us has a different immune system, the symptoms and manifestations of mast cell disease is not exactly the same patient to patient.

Gene Functional Category Analysis And Hierarchical Clustering

To characterize the biological significance of the differentially expressed mast-cell genes, a gene ontology category analysis was performed. GOrilla Gene Enrichment Analysis and Visualization Tool was used to discover whether some functional categories showed statistically significant, concordant differences between the stimulated sample and the unstimulated sample. The enrichment analyzes were carried out for the whole array gene set, including the genes that did not reach statistical significance in the array analysis, that were ranked based on their moderated t values. For the analysis, the ranked genes were sorted in the order of the highest and lowest t value of each sample. The analysis software used the sorted gene lists to classify the genes of each sample into gene ontology categories by their biological function. Selected functional groups and examples of genes that represented each category are depicted in Table Table11.

What Is The Best Probiotic For Daily Use

Each person has a different genetic makeup and has been exposed to different environmental stressors. For this reason, there is no one size fits all probiotic. Despite what supplement companies want you to think, probiotics should be customized to each individuals needs.

In my experience, bifidobacterium species is the most susceptible to medications, poor diet and stress. For this reason, I personally use a bifidobacterium dominant probiotic 3x week, then use REAL kefir once every 7-10 days to replenish lactobacillus/beneficial yeasts. There are 3 main groups of good bacteria: lactobacillus, bifidobacterium, and beneficial yeasts. As long as you are feeding them with a healthy diet, and then replenishing every couple weeks as I do, your gut health should be excellent.

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome Resource Page

The following is a long summary of my research notes and self-experimentation that I engaged in as I waited for an appointment with a mast cell specialist. It is not meant to be medical advice, but rather an aggregation of resources .

Initially, I published the page because other patients who had CSF leaks asked me how they can tamp down on reactions following leak diagnostics or treatment. While having a CSF leak does not, of course, mean one has a mast cell disorder, the overlap between those with complex CSF leaks and those with MCAS does not seem to be insignificant. Many of these patients have a connective tissue disorder that makes their leak harder to seal. Anecdotally, with mast cells living in connective tissue, many of these patients have increased food and environmental reactivity, anaphylaxis, and systemic issues during the diagnosis and treatment of their leaks.

For me, the first sign of these issues was actually in childhood. I had a cough that would itch my throat when trying to sleep, causing sleep disturbance from a young age. The cough went away when I hit puberty, but came back when I got sick on the trans-Mongolian trains en route to Ulaanbaatar. Then, following dengue fever in Vietnam, more hints: itchy skin when I exercised, itching when I ate certain foods like blue cheese, or drank red wine, and a first foray into seasonal allergies during first spring in Oaxaca, Mexico. They were so bad that my eyelashes fell out.

Avoid Probiotics With Bacillus Species

Chris Kresser on Probiotics for Histamine Intolerance and ...

Avoid probiotics with bacillus species and ALL spore based strains. Spore based probiotics are not normal inhabitants of the human GI. Therefore, there is no real reason to supplement with them. Though they may help change the environment of the GI , in my experience, they dont sit well in the stomach.

Brief Summary Of How I Got My Mast Cells Under Control

The level of pain I was with the CSF leak and the mast cell dysfunction was debilitating. It got to a point where I simply sobbed in bed all day long. When my research led me to suspect a mast cell disorder, I implemented the following steps. They sharply reduced my pain levels while I waited for specialist testing.

** This is just what has worked for me so far and is not medical advice. **

For each of these, it was important to go low and slow when onboarding new supplements or medication. Know that its very hard to know what is a material/substance you react to sometimes. I now have a long chart where I write in the stuff that works for me and its fillers, because the experts have made clear that excipients/fillers in medication are often what mast cell patients react to and not necessarily the medication itself.

It wasnt fun or easy, but with no access to knowledgeable medical care, it really helped me stay afloat until I could get to a mast cell specialist.

Mold Histamine Intolerance And Mast Cell Activation Syndrome: Everything You Need To Know

Finding mold in your home is more than just a small annoyance. Mold exposure can have serious health consequences and it may be the reason behind your mysterious chronic symptoms. Mold can hide inside and outside your home and spread its spores and mycotoxins through the air. Mold can increase histamine intolerance and trigger mast cell activation syndrome leading to a variety of chronic symptoms, including allergies, headaches, fatigue, brain fog, congestion, skin problems, and anxiety. The good news is that there are natural solutions you can use to overcome mold toxicity, histamine intolerance, and MCAS.

In this article, you will learn what histamine intolerance and MCAS are. You will understand what mold is and what problems are linked to chronic mold exposure. I will explain how mold, histamine intolerance, and MCAS are connected. I will share my natural solutions for mold toxicity, histamine intolerance, and MCAS.

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome

Mast cell activation syndrome, or MCAS, is an immunological condition where the mast cells in the body release excessive amounts of chemical mediators such as histamine, leading to symptoms such as hives, flushing, rashes, swelling, low blood pressure, dizziness, brain fog, breathing difficulties, and even anaphylaxis.

I have found that mast cell disorders can impact mood, energy, neurological function and a broad array of other body functions. MCAS can also impact the digestive system, leading to nausea, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, abdominal pain, and intestinal cramping.

Further, MCAS can make one more sensitive to both foods and other substances including herbs, supplements and medications. Thus MCAS must be addressed in these cases in order to be able to treat other issues that might be going on in the body such as infection with chronic Lyme/co-infections, and mycotoxin issues.

MCAS is common in both these issues Lyme disease and mycotoxin illness. I believe that both illnesses can act as a trigger for MCAS. It becomes a bit of a chicken and egg situation while Lyme and mycotoxins can cause MCAS, MCAS may prevent an individual from being able to treat the other diseases adequately because of major hypersensitivities it can create to the things that address them.

Parasites can also be a trigger for MCAS given that mast cells are one of our protective mechanisms for parasites. Recent emerging information also points to EMFs as another significant trigger.

So Im Looking For A Probiotic Supplement With Inflammation Lowering

Dr. Lawrence Afrin Discusses Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)

Bifidobacterium infants

Lactobacillus casei

Lactobacillus Bulgaricus

For now Ive decided to avoid Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, until I find studies showing that their histamine raising qualities are in fact something we want, because it raises cAMP levels/fights inflammation.

I would not recommend starting this, or any supplement, without consulting your doctor. If you do try, please go slowly. If you prefer to go the nutritional route, a diet low in histamine is a good place to start check out my post on pre-bioitic foods here.

Mast Cells Long Covid And Covid

Im including this section because we are seeing a lot of write ups about long-COVID / PAS-C, and the impacts on the body. Some mast cell doctors believe that a chunk of long-COVID symptoms is due to dysfunctional mast cells. In a September 2020 study from doctors Afrin, Weinstock, and Molderings, the conclusion notes:

The prevalence of MCAS is similar to that of severe cases within the Covid-19-infected population. Much of Covid-19s hyperinflammation is concordant with manners of inflammation which MC activation can drive. Drugs with activity against MCs or their mediators have preliminarily been observed to be helpful in Covid-19 patients. None of the authors treated MCAS patients with Covid-19 suffered severe infection, let alone mortality.

How I Defeated Mast Cell Activation Syndrome

  • Summary of Mast Cell Activation Syndrome
  • Mast cell activation syndrome is still VERY new to the medical community, but its OLD news to me. I battled with it for 2+ years before putting the MCAS puzzle together. Since it was EXTREMELY complicated to figure out, I felt obligated to help my readers. In this article, I will explain how to overcome this beast STEP by STEP.

How did I overcome mast cell disease? I will explain everything step by step in the section below. After completing these steps, you should be living a normal life again and looking back at this with a grin.

CIRS: Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome could also play a role. Those who are particularly susceptible to mold and have a reduced ability to clear mycotoxins from the body, which leads to a constant activation of mast cells.

Nutritional Deficiencies: Some nutrient deficiencies can trigger MCAD. Vitamin D is required to maintain the stability of mast cells, and a deficiency has been shown to activate them. Zinc is involved in regulating mast-cell function, and there may be a link between magnesium deficiency and inflammation.

Probiotics That Help With Histamine Intolerance

One of the primary strategies I have used for healing my histamine intolerance has been to consume plenty of probiotics. However, through much research and self-experimentation, I found that the specific type of probiotic I consume is key in reducing my histamine levels this is because certain species of probiotics actually produce histamine whereas other species of probiotics actually break down histamine. The vast majority of probiotic supplements out there contain a mixture of histamine-producing and histamine-degrading species, which can make it difficult for histamine-sensitive people to find a probiotic that they can tolerate. Ideally, what we histamine-sensitive people want is to find a probiotic that contains only histamine-degrading species, so that we can use it therapeutically to break down histamine in our bodies. Using an exclusively histamine-degrading probiotic may be very beneficial, at least until the histamine intolerance is under control and balance has been restored to the gut microbiome, at which point a full-spectrum probiotic could be reintroduced.

    Lactobacillus casei

    Lactobacillus acidophilus

    Lactobacillus helveticus

Here is a summary of the probiotic species that degrade histamine and other biogenic amines, and that can be found in the form of supplements. I have personally used all of these probiotics, for varying lengths of time, and they have been crucial in my recovery process. The exact supplements I used are listed after this section:

Disadvantages Of Using Natural Treatments For Mast Cell Activation Syndrome

  • Supplements are bioactive compounds that may have unacceptable effects
  • They may interfere with known medications
  • They still have to be processed through the same liver detoxification enzymes as pharmaceuticals and thus may have unacceptable side effects
  • Supplements may also contain excipients that produce unacceptable side effects
  • Many of my patients find that these natural treatments are sufficient when it comes to treating their MCAS. For others, these natural treatments allow them to reduce the number or amount of drugs they need. When it comes to natural treatments for MCAS and mast cell activation disorder, the most effective work in the following ways:

  • Stabilising mast cells
  • Reducing histamine levels
  • Stabilising the immune system and reducing inflammation
  • With that in mind, here are some of the best natural treatments for MCAS according to the mechanisms they influence. These recommendations were presented at the think tank by Dr. Brian Bouch, a leading integrative medical doctor from California.

Beyond The Basics: Calming The System With Heidi Turner

The patients that Heidi Turner typically sees in her practice have done the basics of diet, probiotics, antimicrobials. They have often been through many doctors, elimination diets, supplements, and more, yet inflammatory symptoms persist and are resistant to treatment. They often have some degree of histamine intolerance or mast cell activation. For this highly sensitive population, managing symptoms alone is a challenge. But recently, many of Heidis patients have seen significant healing results from an unexpected natural therapy. In this episode, Heidi shares her experience treating this unique group of patients, and explains why targeting the limbic system has been effective.

“Mast Cell Activation” – Anne Maitland, MD, PhD
    • Saccharomyces-Boulardii.There are a number of studies on its effectiveness in treating gastroenteritis . Some researchers have linked this condition to high histamine/mast cell issue . So possibly this strain could be a good support. There are some reports apparently about this yeast causing histamine issues in some people, but it has been used for detoxifying gliotoxin and apparently increases DAO production which means it should help with histamine issues.
    • L. Paracasei has been shown to possibly help with leaky gut or allergies
    • L. Casei ShirotaAlthough L. Casei has been shown to raise histamines, L. Casei Shirota has been shown to modulate histamine levels.
    • Lactobacillus Crispatus has been shown to have anti-allergenic effects
