Acid Reflux And Imbalanced Gut Bacteria

Reflux symptoms are commonly perpetuated by gut dysbiosis and/or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth .

In the case of SIBO, bacteria translocate from the large intestine to the small intestine inappropriately, where they then ferment carbohydrates.

Both the fermentation and the presence of bacteria in the small intestine can lead to several physiological changes including decreased gastric motility, prolonged relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, and increased intraabdominal pressure.

These terms might sound complicated, but ultimately all you need to know is that these physiological changes have been implicated in causing reflux episodes.

The Best Probiotic For Ibs And Gerd: How To Choose

Choosing the best probiotic that works for both IBS and GERD is challenging. the two golden rules for choosing the best probiotic for IBS & acid reflux is to go Multi-strain and to avoid probiotic with high FODMAP constituents.

We dug into the research and investigated different probiotic brands to find what works for IBS and Acid reflux.

Here are How to choose the best probiotic for GERD and IBS:

Food Triggers And Eating Habits

Some of the obvious food triggers for acid reflux are hot peppers, spicy foods, caffeine, and tomato sauces. However, it is often other foods or beverages that are causing reflux like dairy, gluten, fried foods, sugar, and alcohol.

These foods and beverages can cause the lower esophageal sphincter, or valve, to relax and open up, which causes acid and food contents to back up into the esophagus. They can also throw the microbiome out of balance.

Food sensitivities can cause inflammation and result in indigestion. When foods arent properly digested, they are more likely flow back into the esophagus.

Many people also eat too fast, too, causing the stomach to be overloaded, resulting in reflux. Thoroughly chewing your foods will help reduce your heartburn and indigestion by simply helping to break down your food before it hits your stomach.

Chewing foods well and avoiding trigger foods eases all aspects of digestive health, by the way.

Why Do Probiotics Help With Acid Reflux

Most studies indicate that most probiotic bacteria don’t stop the production of acid but instead can ease the symptoms of acid reflux and help with PPI side effects. There were some outliers though.

In a Japanese study, Lactobacillus Johnsonii was shown to inhibit gastrin-mediated acid in mice but it’s unclear if these effects can translate into humans and it wasn’t stated if this was done in the same way that PPI’s work.

It’s also impossible to find probiotic supplements that contain the L. Johnsonii probiotic strain. In the study, the strain was taken from the gastric juice of a healthy Japanese male volunteer.

Probiotics may help via the Esophageal Microbiome by reducing inflammation and ensuring the bacteria is diverse. If you have dysbiosis of the Esophageal Microbiome then you are at risk for GERD, Barretts esophagus, and more.

Can Probiotics Improve Ibs Symptoms

The Best Probiotic Food Is Definitely NOT Yogurt

A comprehensive 2016 review concluded that its unclear how effective probiotics are for treating IBS. It cited small study sizes and lack of consistent data .

However, a number of studies have shown that specific probiotics may have the potential to target specific symptoms. Probiotics from the Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Saccharomyces families have shown particular promise (

15 ).

A German study of a two-strain probiotic liquid known as Pro-Symbioflor also had promising results. In this study, 297 patients were treated for eight weeks and experienced a 50% decrease in general symptoms, including abdominal pain .

Meanwhile, Symprove is a four-strain probiotic that was tested in 186 patients in the UK. It was found to reduce overall symptom severity after 12 weeks of treatment .

Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 capsules have also been shown to marginally reduce pain, bloating and problems with bowel habits in all subtypes of IBS .

While some of these results are promising, there is some inconsistency between studies. In addition, most strains only have one study demonstrating their effectiveness. Therefore, more research is needed to confirm the results.

Summary Preliminary research has found 10 probiotic strains that may help improve overall symptoms of IBS. However, results have been inconsistent, and most strains have only one small study behind them. Further research is required.

Why I love it: Holle organic baby formula is very comparable to Lebenswert in ingredients, and is also a great option for parents who dont want pre/probiotics or ARA added to their formula and want to supplement with that separately.

Holle baby formulas are Demeter biodynamic certified, which has even more stringent and careful regulations than Bioland. This ensures the purest, non-GMO ingredients, the highest standards for animal welfare, and a commitment to biodiversity and sustainability.

Is Acid Reflux The Same As Reflux Esophagitis

Acid reflux and reflux esophagitis are two different medical conditions.

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms.

Reflux esophagitis is a more serious condition that occurs when the lining of the esophagus becomes inflamed from exposure to stomach acid.

While both conditions can be uncomfortable, reflux esophagitis can lead to more serious problems such as ulcers and bleeding.

If you think you might have either condition, it’s important to see a doctor so they can diagnose and treat you appropriately.

The ability of probiotics is limitless, and they can have different effects on the body to each person, depending on their individual strain. There has only been a relatively recent discovery of new information about what particular probiotic strains are best used to treat reflux.

What Is The Best Probiotic For Acid Reflux

There is no “best” probiotic for acid reflux, as different people will respond to different strains of probiotics. However, some research suggests that certain strains may be helpful for reducing symptoms of acid reflux, including Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Saccharomyces boulardii. If you’re interested in trying a probiotic for your acid reflux, speak with your doctor or a registered dietitian to choose the right one for you and determine the proper dosage.

Studied Probiotic Strains For Acid Reflux

This journal states that Gastroesophageal reflux disease has a negative impact on quality of life and leads to expensive health care costs. According to the NIDDK, at least 20% of the US population may have Acid Reflux so it is prevalent in society.

In this randomized clinical control trial from China, 134 patients with Reflux Esophagitis were split up into two groups. The first was given 20mg of Esomeprazole PPI daily for 8-weeks along with a probiotic supplement that contained Bacillus Subtilis and Enterococcus Faeciumprobiotic bacteria.

The second group was also given 20mg of the PPI but instead of the probiotic bacteria, they took a placebo. Those who completed the 8-week trial were asked to fill out a reflux diagnostic questionnaire but there was no difference between both groups in the questionnaire.

The other results that were interesting were that a Gastrointestinal symptom rating scale score was lower in the Probiotic group and so was small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. The study claimed that combining probiotics with Esomeprazole may be beneficial.

In my opinion, I think this study was poorly done because the probiotic strains used weren’t great. It would have been better if they had used Lactobacillus bacteria and secondly I think that self-reporting scores doesn’t always provide accurate results. No information on diet was given either.
