Blis K12 And M18 Probiotics

The Commercial Outcome Of These Laboratory Discoveries Was The Launching Of The Dunedin

BLIS K12 Probiotic

Two years later the first oral probiotic product, BLIS K12 ThroatGuard, appeared on the shelves of New Zealand pharmacies. A wide variety of BLIS K12 and BLIS M18 products in powder, lozenge, chewing gum and ice cream formulations have subsequently been developed and many are available internationally.

As for Professor Tagg, he continues his important work with BLIS Technologies in our Dunedin laboratory. He has isolated more than 2000 strains of bacteria during his studies and research, and his role now is to continue looking at how those strains can be used to further benefit human health.

In 2021, BLIS Technologies is proud to manufacture and sell a variety of science-lead and backed oral probiotics with specific focuses, which you can find in our shop.

Q My Son Has Strep Throat And Is Currently On Antibiotics Should I Start Him On Throathealth Now Or Wait Until He Has Finished The Antibiotics

We would recommend beginning ThroatHealth the day after a course of antibiotics is complete. It is important to take the full course of antibiotics as prescribed by a healthcare professional.. Antibiotics kill the bad bacteria and they also kill the good bacteria so the optimum time to recolonize the oral cavity quickly with good bacteria is immediately following antibiotics.

Blis K1: An Oral Probiotic That Naturally Lives In A Healthy Mouth And Throat

BLIS K12 is a specific strain of bacteria called Streptococcus salivarius K12 which can be found naturally in the mouth and throat of some healthy adults and children. Our scientists discovered that while everyone has Streptococcus salivarius bacteria, it is not as common to have the specific beneficial BLIS K12 strain.

The discovery of BLIS K12 is credited to Professor John Tagg who dedicated his lifes work to research in microbiology.

Protec Probotic Oral Care

PROTEC contains the worlds first probiotic treatment specifically for throat and mouth, Streptococcus salivarius K12 and Streptococcus salivarius M18 . The probiotics were initially isolated in New Zealand by Dr John Tagg, Professor Emeritus of Microbiology at University of Otago. Today they are supported by more than 36 years of research and numerous clinical trials.

Professor Tagg observed that some school children were much less susceptible to pharyngitis, tonsilitis and other oral infection. He found that variation in natural oral bacteria levels was a strong co-relating factor.

Blis K12 and M18 produce bacteriocin like inhibiting substances which inhibit the growth of other more bacteria and viruses. Blis beneficial bacteria grow in the mouth to assist ongoing oral and dental health. They are also proven effective against Middle Ear infections.

DENTALPROTEC helps protect against tooth decay and gum disease, reducing dental plaque.

For everyday protection, reducing the incidence of sore throats and colds and fighting against winter illnesses.

Giving a strong boost to the immune system at times of greater risk. TRAVELPROTEC helps your body fight against airborne microorganisms commonly found in crowded and confined spaces such as on trains and planes, which present the perfect environment for multiplication. Your best travel companion.

Dna Extraction And Sequencing Preparation

Clinical Grade Oral Probiotics * 4 Billion CFUs of BLIS K12® & BLIS M18 ...

One lozenge from each of groups A and B was dissolved separately in 1 mL of sterile, PCR-grade water. Aliquots of the clinical samples and the dissolved lozenges were mechanically lysed using Lysing Matrix E bead tubes and RLT Plus lysis buffer for 30 s×2 using the Omni Bead Ruptor 24. Purification of genomic DNA was achieved with the AllPrep DNA/RNA Isolation Kit , using a spin column for DNA isolation. PCR-grade water was used as a negative extraction control.

The V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene was amplified using Illumina-compatible primers S-D-Bact-0341-b-S-17 and S-D-Bact-0785-a-A-21, as previously described. Duplicate PCR reactions were pooled and purified for sequencing, as previously described. Normalised samples were submitted to Auckland Genomics Ltd for sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform.

My Child Has Strep Throat And Is Currently On Antibiotics Should I Start Him On Blis Probiotics Now Or Wait Until He Has Finished The Antibiotics

We would recommend beginning BLIS Probiotics the day after the course of antibiotics is complete.

It is important to take the full course of antibiotics as they will kill off the bad bacteria that is causing the infection. But, the way antibiotics work is that they also kill the good bacteria, which means that if you’re taking BLIS products at the same time as antibiotics, the beneficial effects of BLIS won’t be as strong.

The optimal time to recolonize the oral cavity with good bacteria is immediately following the course of antibiotics.

Bacteria And Bacterial Culture

The major bacteria used in this experiment are the bacteria associated with oral malodor, P. gingivalis ATCC 33277 and T. denticola ATCC 35405, which were purchased from American Type Culture Collection . P. gingivalis was cultured in brain heart infusion liquid media, which included hemin and Vitamin K . T. denticola was cultured in tryptoneyeast extractgelatinvolatile fatty acidsserum media in a 37°C anaerobic state . S. salivarius K12 and M18 were used as probiotics and cultured in BHI media at 37°C. For the coculture of oral cavity bacteria, P. gingivalis was cultured in BHI media containing hemin and vitamin K. T. denticola was cultured in a mixed media consisting of TYGVS liquid media and BHI liquid media in a onetoone ratio at 37°C in an anaerobic condition.

Assessment Of Probiotic Viability

After trial completion, one lozenge from each group was separately dissolved in 10 mL of sterile water. One L of each suspension was inoculated on tryptic soy agar with sheep blood and incubated at 35 °C with 5% CO2 for 32 h. Colonies were enumerated and a representative colony was identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry using the VITEK MS system .

3.1.1. The inhibitory effects of coculture of P. gingivalis and S. salivarius on the synthesis of VSCs

After culturing S. salivarius by themselves or coculturing with oral malodor causing bacteria, Oral Chroma was used to measure the concentration of VSCs. When P. gingivalis and S. salivarius were cocultured, the level of VSCs that formed decreased significantly as the level of S. salivarius increased .

Supports Respiratory & Overall Health

Quick Story: Once upon a time, there was remarkable a boy growing up in Dunedin, New Zealand. While others struggled with throat and respiratory concerns, he stayed well through the harsh winters year after year. When curious researchers decided to try to find out why, they discovered that he carried the rare strain of bacteria I mentioned above Streptococcus salivarius K12.

Research indicates that S. salivarius K12 competes with certain species of pathogenic bacteria, including some that are linked to sore throats, earaches, and respiratory issues.

Other beneficial strains may support the ear, nose and throat areas as well. In this study, kids who took a probiotic containing Streptococcus salivarius K12, Streptococcus salivarius M18, Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus sakei, and Lactobacillus paracasei enjoyed better overall respiratory function than those who did not.

A good oral care routine may also support overall health, including gut health and cardiovascular health. According to ethnopharmacologist Dr. Nelson-Dooley notes that, In people with coronary artery disease, simply beginning an oral hygiene program reduced their cardiac events.

On the flipside, One study showed that using mouthwash eliminated the beneficial effects of healthy oral bacteria and raised blood pressure.

Also, we swallow about 1 trillion microbes per day a process that profoundly impacts our gut microbiome.

  • Streptococcus salivarius K12
  • Lactobacillus paracasei

Where To Find K12

TheraBreath Probiotics contain over 1 billion cultures of K12 probiotics bacteria, which attack bad bacteria present in the mouth. Within 7 days, the gum’s Aktiv-K12 bacteria take root and defend the oral cavity from bacterial damage. One treatment per month helps the patient maintain a healthy flora balance in the oral cavity.

Study Design And Sample Collection

Pre-intervention, unstimulated saliva samples were collected in a sterile container 1 mL of saliva was requested but patients usually provided less due to hyposalivation. Sub- and supra-gingival plaque was collected pre-intervention from the posterior mandibular molars and, if insufficient plaque was available, the lower incisors. Pre-intervention oral health was assessed as detailed below. Patients were given 30 of the randomly assigned Group A or B lozenges: Group A lozenges were a placebo Group B lozenges contained 3.5×109 CFU of S. salivarius M18 per lozenge at the time of manufacture . Patients were asked to suck one lozenge slowly until dissolved after brushing in the evening every day for four weeks. Oral hygiene advice during the trial complemented recommendations for post-radiotherapy oral care. Patients were advised to brush twice daily using high fluoride toothpaste, with no post-brushing rinse and to clean interdentally. Four weeks post-intervention, plaque and saliva samples were collected and post-intervention oral health assessments were performed, as described above. Plaque samples, collected in RNAlater , and neat saliva samples were stored at 20 °C until further analysis.

Helps With Bad Breath

Pro Dental Probiotics For Oral & Dental Health

Most products that are sold to freshen breath focus on one of two approaches:

  • Masking odor
  • Killing the bacteria that cause halitosis

Bad breath is most commonly caused by a group of bacteria that produce smelly volatile sulfur compounds as they break down foods.

The rotten eggs odor some people associate with unpleasant breath usually comes from a VSC called hydrogen sulfide, while others such as methyl mercaptan smell like rotten cabbage.

Because bacteria repopulate quickly, methods that mask odor or kill the bacteria tend to have pretty short-term effects.

Dental probiotics take a different approach. Instead of trying to kill the strains of bacteria that cause halitosis, dental probiotics introduce beneficial strains that compete with them.

In this study, 85% of the participants who took an oral probiotic containing two strains of Streptococcus salivarius K12 and M18 experienced a significant reduction in VSC-producing bacteria in just one week. Even better, they maintained these lowered levels for two weeks after the last lozenge.

Some of the strains that have been specifically found to be helpful for freshening breath are:

  • Streptococcus salivarius K12
  • Lactobacillus salivarius WB21

Ive Been Using The Freshbreath Kit For Several Months Now And Im Experiencing Fantastic Results Should I Continuously Use It All The Time Or Take A Break For A While

Weve found that continuing to use the FreshBreath Kit achieves long-term sustained fresh breath, which supports it being a part of your regular dental hygiene routine.

We know that there is some ongoing effect when taking BLIS K12 but it does drop off if not maintained, so using one FreshBreath Kit will not stop bad breath forever.

Q What Is The Benefit Of Taking An Oral Probiotic

In an ideal situation, everybody would have the right balance of microbes in their oral cavity. Unfortunately, this is not the case and for those who have an imbalance, they may experience things like bad breath. For a small portion of the population they already have a high natural presence of Streptococcus salivarius . For the rest of us, a Blis probiotic will introduce beneficial bacteria to the oral cavity to help support a healthy mouth and throat.

What Is The Best Form Of Blis K12 And Blis M18 Lozenges Gum Powder

We typically produce BLIS K12® and BLIS M18® in lozenge form as it is the most effective way to colonise the mouth and throat with the good bacteria.

Allowing the lozenge to dissolve slowly on the tongue gives it the best opportunity to work its magic in the mouth and throat area.

We also offer a powdered form which is suitable for children who may struggle to suck on a lozenge.

It’s important to note that the lozenge should not be swallowed whole as that will lead to no beneficial colonisation in the mouth. And, it should not be chewed, as that will cause the good bugs to die before they can do their work.

How Does Blis K12 Work

Years of research went into finding a way to deliver BLIS K12 to the mouth and throat in such a way that it could colonize effectively. Lozenges and powder are ideal formats as the BLIS K12 bacteria can stay alive in that format for at least two years when stored correctly. They do not have to be kept in the fridge but if you live in a hot, humid environment, you may want to give them added protection by keeping them cool.

The bacteria activate when in the mouth, where conditions are moist and warm*. The longer the lozenge can be kept in the mouth before swallowing, the more effective it will be, and more of the bacteria can be crowded out*. Thats why slowly sucking on a lozenge is recommended*. However, for infants who are unable to suck a lozenge, the powder format of ThroatHealth for Kids is a great way to give them the benefits of BLIS K12*.
