How To Use Probiotics To Treat A Yeast Infection
Probiotics are microorganisms in supplements and food that can benefit your health. Microorganisms naturally live on and in our bodies, helping with digestion, fighting illness, and making vitamins.
Probiotics may support health by helping to maintain a balanced microbiome and supporting your immune system.
Lactobacillus is a friendly bacteria that lives in human digestive, genital, and urinary systems. Its also found in fermented foods like yogurt.
The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates Lactobacillus as possibly effective for treating vaginal bacterial overgrowth, but possibly ineffective at treating vaginal yeast infections.
While ingesting Lactobacillus in supplements or yogurt may not prevent yeast infections for folks who take antibiotics, vaginal probiotic suppositories do improve symptoms when used with conventional treatment.
Best Probiotics For Vaginal Yeast Infections
Generally, the best probiotic for yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, and general vaginal health is Lactobacillus bacteria. This is because the normal vaginal flora comprises of many Lactobacillus probiotics.1 Lactobacillus species work to acidify and protect the vagina from harmful organisms. These acid-making bacteria can inhibit harmful or otherwise foreign fungi from adhering to the lining of the vagina.
Will probiotics help yeast infection? One study of 30 women examined the rates of reoccurring yeast infections in women that had yeast infections. They were instructed to use anti-fungal medications for 10 days and were instructed to douche with different milk products or placebo control for 2 weeks. The study found that the application of milk products to the vagina reduced the number of yeast reinfections in 3 months of follow up.
Within 3 months of the treatment regimen 1 woman in the Lactobacillus containing milk group, 1 woman in yogurt treat group, and no women in low fat milk treat group got yeast infections. 3 women treated by a placebo developed yeast infections.2 The authors reasoned that the reason why probiotic-free low fat milk worked as well was that the lactose content of the milk acted as a prebiotic for existing Lactobacilli.

Oropharyngeal Candidiasis is a mucosal fungal infection that is prevalent among patients with compromised immunity. The success of probiotics in treating chronic diseases with a microbial etiology component at other mucosal sites has inspired research into the use of probiotics in the treatment of OPC. A growing body of research in vitro and in animal models indicates that some probiotic species and strains have inhibitory activities against Candida albicans growth, morphological switching, and biofilm formation. However, recent review and meta-analysis studies reveal a dearth of human randomized, controlled clinical trials on the efficacy of probiotics to treat or prevent OPC, while the majority of these have not based their selection of probiotic strains or the type of administration on sound pre-clinical evidence. In this mini-review, we assess the state of the field, outline some of the difficulties in translating lab results to clinical efficacy, and make recommendations for future research needed in order to move the field forward.

Gut Probiotics Prebiotics As Synbiotics
The benefits of taking oral probiotics to prevent or cure candida require more study. Probiotic research has focused more on the benefits for gut health. And this may also benefit oral thrush.
One study looking at probiotic yogurt with L. casei and B. breve on concluded it had positive benefits in oral candida cases. The probiotic yogurt boosted levels of IgA antibodies that fight candida.
Probiotics may act by helping immune system regulation in the gut. In the gut, the immune system and gut microbes work together. They form antibodies and coordinate the immune response. The oral microbiome is also involved in the immune response. Oral probiotics may help there too, as well as maintaining bacterial balance.
Oral prebiotics are non-digestible fibers. They may also be effective against oral thrush in two ways.
Firstly, they feed friendly probiotic bacteria. This is called a synbiotic action. Very little is known about oral symbiotic and what they do in the mouth.
Secondly, oral prebiotics are similar to dietary fiber. They may increase bacteria that release enzymes to break down candidas fibrous cell wall.
The action of prebiotics and symbiotic probiotic against candida is an area worthy of further research.

Probiotics To Heal From Candida Overgrowth
Intestinal Candida overgrowth is a form of dysbiosis. It occurs when the good bacteria are disrupted by some external force like diet or antibiotics, and the Candida yeast has the opportunity to proliferate.
A body of scientific evidence has proved that probiotics can help both adults and children recover from Candida overgrowth.
It is essential to pick a probiotic with the correct strains of bacteria to displace the overgrowth of Candida from the gut. Probiotic strains like L. acidophilus and L. paracasei have been shown to demonstrate anti-Candidal activity. Select a probiotic that has the strains you need to heal from Candida.
Yogurt With Probiotics For Yeast Infections
Using yogurt with probiotics for yeast infections is very common, although it has been considered by many health experts highly controversial. Next to some cases where it was found as very useful, there were many reported cases where consuming yogurt with probiotics caused side effects such as bloating, gas and other digestive issues. The research data also shows this conflict: one study found that consuming yogurt with probiotics for yeast infections did benefit some people, while other did not not see any benefits. The conclusion of the study was that more studies are needed .
As we mentioned, yogurt and other probiotic foods may not be the best fit when you have yeast infection due potential sensitives to dairy, as well as potential contamination risks that are very common with store-bought probiotic foods. The bottom line: it is much safer and effective to get your probiotics for yeast infection from probiotic supplements.

Question #: Are There Any Other Ingredients That Might Damage Your Gut Health
Tablets and capsules always include additional filler ingredients besides the active drug or supplement in question. These are usually included to lengthen its shelf life, sweeten it, or make the probiotic easier to pour into capsules.
You should take care to read the ingredients label carefully. These extra substances can often be quite damaging to your gut health. Other ingredients might be allergens or substances that could hurt your health in some other way.
Some manufacturers use gluten, nuts, dairy products or animal products in their probiotics. This could spell big trouble for you if you are allergic to them, if you suffer from conditions such as celiac disease, or if you are a vegetarian or vegan.
Be particularly careful to avoid supplements that contain large amounts of gums. These are commonly used in some gummy vitamins and probiotics. The gums used in these formulations are a gut irritant that will likely compromise your gut health and worsen your Candida symptoms. Examples are gellen gum and xanthan gum.
Also watch out for unnecessary sweeteners. These sugars can come in many different forms, like sugar, sucralose, maltodextrin, and more. Some of these sweeteners can feed pathogenic bacteria and yeast, others are gut irritants, but none of them are really necessary in a high-quality formulation.

How Do Daye Make Their Proviotics
The cultures of Lactobacillus plantarium are grown in organic carrot juice.
As Daye points out, most other brands use milk cultures, which may not be suitable for all women. This method of growing the probiotic makes it suitable for vegans.
The bacteria is then freeze-dried. This means that the product can be stored in the cupboard and will last longer than other similar products.

What I Thought Of Proviotics
My first tin of Dayes new probiotics arrived in a rectangular parcel.
Inside was a beautifully colored cardboard box with information about Daye and a small leaflet. The leaflet briefly explained what the ProViotics are intended to help with and the importance of a healthy vaginal microbiome.
The pills were sealed in the silver tin both with both an internal seal and an external one.
When I opened up the tin I found 30 pills which were small round discs, about 1cm in diameter.
They looked natural and completely free from added coatings or casings that other pills have.
I took my first pill and found it tasted slightly like carrot. This must be because the bacterial culture is grown in organic carrot juice, but it was a nice change from other probiotics which taste quite frankly disgusting.
Although I had no problem taking the pills if I suggested any improvement it might be that the pills could be slightly smaller for swallowing.
However they can also inserted in the vagina at night and this in fact may be a more effective way to use them.
Either way these probiotics look completely natural and havent been processed to make them look more attractive.
Question #: How Many Billion Cfus Of Bacteria Does It Contain
CFU stands for colony forming unit, and it tells us the level of live and active bacteria that we can find in a dose of probiotic. It doesnt give the whole picture, but it does give us one way to compare probiotics.
In general terms: the higher the CFU count, the more effective that probiotic is.
Although you should also be aware of how many bacteria your probiotic will actually deliver to your gut.
Not all probiotics inform you how many CFUs they contain. Be wary. A probiotic should contain at least 10 billion CFUs for it to be useful for an adult, or at least 5 billion CFUs for children.
If you are looking at a probiotic and it doesnt clearly state the CFU count, then consider a different brand.
The higher the CFU count, the greater the amount of useful bacteria will reach your intestines where it can get to work healing your body. No one has ever overdosed on probiotics the worst side effect you are likely to see is some bloating or stomach cramps. Therefore, finding a high CFU is your safest bet.

Are Any Probiotics Not Recommended For Candida
In general, there arent any probiotics that are contraindicated in Candida overgrowth in fact, most probiotic bacteria offer some degree of anti-Candida potential through competitive inhibition/competitive exclusion and by lowering the pH in the intestines like most pathogens, this troublesome yeast prefers an alkaline environment.
There is however some debate over whether an anti-Candida protocol should include prebiotics, in the form of fructo-oligosaccharides or inulin. One opinion is that prebiotics can feed the Candida, and potentially worsen the dysbiosis. However, others believe that the positive effects of taking prebiotics from a high-quality source, such as encouraging the growth of friendly bacteria in the gut, and increasing short-chain-fatty-acid production outweigh any potential negatives. If you are interested in finding out more about the debate you can read our blog over on the Probiotics Learning Lab, ‘Does FOS feed bad bacteria?‘

What Are The Causes Of Thrush
Thrush is typically caused by a pathogenic yeast known as Candida. Candida spp. lives naturally in the body – within the intestines, mouth, skin and vagina. In low numbers, they are usually considered harmless. The most common species of Candida that can cause thrush is Candida albicans. Find out more about Candida albicans.
Candida albicans may increase in number when there is an imbalance, known as dysbiosis, in the microbiome. The human microbiome is the name given to the microbes that live on or within the human body including bacteria and yeasts. Collectively, they form an ecosystem. There is usually a delicate balance between the beneficial microbes and pathogenic microbes in our microbiome. Symptoms of thrush may develop when there is an overgrowth of C. albicans in the mouth or genital area. This overgrowth is believed to occur as a result of a disruption to our microbiome, leading to dysbiosis. This disruption may occur due to factors such as:
- Medication use – antibiotics, oral contraceptive pill3 or hormonal replacement therapy4, corticosteroids5
- Fluctuations in hormone levels such as during pregnancy3. Disruption of the natural pH balance of the vagina caused by local factors such as use of scented intimate products and soaps
- Underlying medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus6
- Dietary habits excessive alcohol consumption, high sugar/low fibre diets
- Sexual activity7
Oral Probiotics Vs Probiotic Suppository For Yeast Infection
|Symptoms & Concerns|
Using probiotics for feminine health has been commonly suggested as a way to prevent or treat vaginal yeast infection. Oral probiotics are usually preferred over probiotic suppository or other methods involving inserting probiotics for yeast infection into the vagina.
There are a few reasons why oral probiotics for yeast infection are considered a better choice over inserting probiotics for yeast infection.
The majority of the vaginal yeast infections are caused by a systemic yeast infection problem in the body. In other words, the vaginal infection is only one symptom of a larger problem of candida yeast overgrowth in the body. Inserting probiotic suppository or probiotic pill in vagina may help the yeast infection in the vagina, but it wont help to balance the infection in other areas in the body. Oral probiotics however, will.
Another reason to prefer oral probiotics for yeast infection is that most published studies used oral probiotics. There is some research data suggesting that intravaginal may be beneficial as well though. A study that had women take vaginal lactobacillus plantarum capsule together with antifungals, showed that using lactobacillus plantarum probiotic increased the Lactobacillus values in the vagina, and improved symptoms of vaginal discomfort such as burning and itching .

Which Probiotics Are Best For Candida
A common question regarding probiotics is if they can help in cases of Candida albicans yeast overgrowth, commonly known as Candidiasis or fungal dysbiosis. We’d say that it’s very important that all Candida diet and supplement protocols are undertaken with the support and guidance of a suitably qualified therapist. Many symptoms of Candida overgrowth are similar to those relating to other health conditions, so it is also essential for individuals to first consult with their doctor to rule out other medical causes for their symptoms.
