Bifidobacterium Infantis 35624 Modulates Host Inflammatory Processes Beyond The Gut

Abstract:

Certain therapeutic microbes, including Bifidobacteria infantis 35624 exert beneficial immunoregulatory effects by mimicking commensal-immune interactions however, the value of these effects in patients with non-gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions remains unclear.

In this study, we assessed the impact of oral administration of B. infantis 35624, for 68 weeks on inflammatory biomarker and plasma cytokine levels in patients with ulcerative colitis , chronic fatigue syndrome and psoriasis in three separate randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled interventions. Additionally, the effect of B. infantis 35624 on immunological biomarkers in healthy subjects was assessed.

At baseline, both gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal patients had significantly increased plasma levels of C-reactive protein and the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-6 compared with healthy volunteers. B. infantis 35624 feeding resulted in reduced plasma CRP levels in all three inflammatory disorders compared with placebo.

Interestingly, plasma TNF- was reduced in CFS and psoriasis while IL-6 was reduced in UC and CFS. Furthermore, in healthy subjects, LPS-stimulated TNF- and IL-6 secretion by peripheral blood mononuclear cells was significantly reduced in the B. infantis 35624-treated groups compared with placebo following eight weeks of feeding.

What Can You Do

My opinion is that the root cause is a static microbiome dysfunction and thus correcting the microbiome is the ideal long term approach . According to the US National Library of Medicine studies:

  • Jerusalem Artichoke

A reader asked me to put together a list of test that could/should be done. I divide the tests into two categories:

  • Actionable the results lead immediately to an accepted treatment with high possibility of success
  • Informational this shows that there is a problem, there may be treatment of a sort typically symptom mitigations

Individual experiences vary, but magnesium, melatonin, and probiotics are among supplements that have shown promise in the medical literature:

  • Magnesium. People with fibromyalgia are more likely than others to have low magnesium, and many doctors advise fibromyalgia patients to take this supplement.1

One study of 60 premenopausal women looked at the impact of taking magnesium citrate, an antidepressant, or a combination of both. When a daily 300 mg dose of the supplement was used on its own, most symptomsincluding tender points and depressiondecreased. When the same dose of the supplement was used with a daily 10 mg dose of the antidepressant amitriptyline, it eased every symptom but numbness.2One small study at a fibromyalgia clinic monitored use of a magnesium chloride patch on womens arms and legs. Participants were checked after two weeks, then four weeks, and reported improved quality of life.3

Magnesium is usually sold by itself, combined with calcium, or with both calcium and zinc.

Faecal Concentrations Of Calprotectin

Parts of the collected stool samples were used for determinations of faecal concentrations of calprotectin. Faecal calprotectin has been shown to closely correlate with colonic macroscopic and histological inflammation. The stool samples were prepared and analysed according to the manufacturers instructions . The samples were suspended in buffer, homogenized and centrifuged followed by ELISA assays of the supernatants .

A Me/cfs Lyme Patient Recovering

A reader emailed me and asked some questions.

My good friend that also has CFS/Lyme said to me that he is about 80% better in all his symptoms after using Ivermectin that his Lyme doctor prescribed him. His was almost bedridden, had extreme brain fog with depersonalization, low motivation etc. He used Ivermectin 2x a week 3ml oral. After 2 months he is now adding Metronidazol with minocyclin and his state is extremely improving. I tried to find some info on your blog but I didnt find anything. Do you maybe know what Ivermectin did? I also saw that his skin/face is looking like a baby hahahah he looks 15 years younger.

I have a site for non-prescription items and give the list of items here. This site also provides prescription items for professionals. I looked up on that list and found:

I checked on the other common member, doxycycline s, and found that it did not have a good impact.

The other item: Ivermectin, did not have a good profile for ME/CFS but it does impact a lot of different bacteria

How to Heal Candida Overgrowth – Cynthia Foster MD, Dr. Fosters Essentials

A great deal more is known about ME/CFS today than 35 years ago. With continued and expanded support from the NIH, CDC, and private foundations dedicated to ME/CFS, I expect a lot of progress in the coming decade. Instead of doctors saying, The tests came back normal, there is nothing wrong, they will say, Tests showed us what was wrong, and we have treatments to fix it.

And doctors will recognize the wisdom of the wise advice we all learned in medical school: Listen to your patient. The patient is telling you the diagnosis.

Probiotics For Chronic Fatigue And Fibromyalgia Probably But The Science Isnt Yet There

Posted on September 26, 2019 by biomebuzz

As regular readers know, Im always on the lookout for things you can do now. Im especially happy then when actual clinical trials happen as we can get some idea of the effectiveness of treatments. About 18 months ago, a paper was published reviewing studies that looked at the use of probiotics in fibromyalgia syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome . Ive written before about bacterial microbiome changes that have been noted in both illnesses, but have not had much opportunity to write about what can be done about it. Unfortunately, as it turns out, theres a reason for that.

Some research has shown that those with CFS have intestinal overgrowth of d-lactic acid producing bacteria which, if you remember , often produces cognitive dysfunction and neurological issues. Research published in 2004 showed that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth occurs 100% of the time in those with FMS, compared to 84% of the time in those with IBS and 20% of the time in healthy controls. SIBO is, as you know , difficult to diagnose accurately and may or may not result in symptoms, as shown yet again by the fact that 20% of healthy controls in this study are asymptomatic. However, this does give a good picture of the relationship of biome alterations to the disease, FMS. It makes sense then that probiotics might help those suffering from these illnesses.

The probiotic blend offered by Dr. Tobias includes five different types of bacteria which total to a bit under five billion colony-forming units.

The capsules are another major selling point Dr. Tobias claims that their capsules resist the digestion of the stomach acid, making it so that more bacteria make their way into the intestinal tract instead of being destroyed by stomach acid.

Is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome A Gut Issue

Genomics/Proteomics

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a very frightening and complicated disorder. Defined as severe exhaustion that cant be relieved by rest, this condition has frustrated modern medicine for a long time.

Also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis , this disease has no real triggers or underlying conditions, and diagnosing it requires a lot of time and testing. Although anyone can have CFS, women are far more likely to suffer from it than men, most commonly in their middle years.

Its symptoms run the gamut, from extreme fatigue lasting more than a day and unexplained joint or muscle pain to enlarged lymph nodes, headaches, poor sleep and even irritable bowel syndrome .

While CFS is a condition with very few connections, research teams at Columbia and Cornell Universities have found important markers that link it to the human gut.

83 percent accurate

The discovery that connects chronic fatigue syndrome to the human gut was a welcome confirmation to Cornell researchers that its origins were definitely not psychological.

Our work demonstrates that the gut bacterial microbiome in ME/CFS patients isnt normal, perhaps leading to gastrointestinal and inflammatory symptoms in victims of the disease, says Dr. Maureen Hanson, senior author of the study, according to a press release. Furthermore, our detection of a biological abnormality provides further evidence against the ridiculous concept that the disease is psychological in origin.

Gut Bacteria That May Cause Anxiety And Depression

There are some bacteria that may contribute to the pathophysiology of anxiety and depression. Most probiotic supplement companies would never include such bacteria in their product, so you shouldnt have to worry. A benefit associated with taking the right probiotic is that it may compete with and/or inhibit proliferation of these unhealthy gut bacteria, ultimately improving mood and reducing anxiety.

Citrobacter rodentium: This is a Gram-negative bacterium that is associated with higher mortality rates in mice. Whether Citrobacter rodentium is detrimental to the health of humans and/or pathogenic remains unclear. In mice, it is associated with increased rates of gastrointestinal disease and may facilitate an upregulation in other pathogenic bacteria within the intestinal lining.

A study published in 2011 discovered that Citrobacter rodentium was implicated in stress-induced memory dysfunction in mice. Probiotic treatment successfully reversed the influx of Citrobacter rodentium within the gastrointestinal tract of mice, thereby attenuating the memory deficits. That said, it is unlikely that Citrobacter rodentium solely causes memory deficits it may also directly increase anxiety in mice.

Conditions Associated With Leaky Gut Syndrome

A short-list includes allergies and food sensitivities, headaches, brain fog, memory loss, eczema or psoriasis, acne, depression, diarrhea and constipation and bloating. Many researchers theorize that leaky gut also leads to serious health challenges such as irritable bowel and colitis, Crohns disease, autoimmune diseases, liver and gallbladder inflammation and disease, celiac disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia.

Gut imbalances can contribute to hormonal imbalances. If that happens, its an entire new rabbit hole with things like polycystic ovary syndrome , researchers have discovered a relationship between leaky gut and low progesterone levels leading to irritable bowel syndrome . It has been said that if a patient develops unexplainable symptoms, and no clear diagnosis can be established, it could be that a leaky gut is the underlying cause.

Diagnostic tests can determine whether intestinal permeability, or leaky gut, is present Genova Diagnostics offers the Intestinal Permeability Assessment. Another is available from BioHealth Laboratory the Leaky Gut Assessment. The Life Extension website also offers tests. KBMO Diagnostics has designed tests for food sensitivities that may be associated with leaky gut.

Microbiome Definition Of Cfs/fm/ibs

A coarse condition that results from:

  • Low or no Lactobacillus, AND/OR
  • Low or no Bifidobacteria , AND/OR
  • Low or no E.Coli , AND/OR
  • A marked increase in number of bacteria genus to the top range
  • Most of these genus are hostile to/suppress Lactobacillus, Bifidobacteria, E.Coli
  • Several are two or more times higher than normally seen
  • The number of bacteria genus goes very high , but most of them are low amounts.
  • The appearance of rarely seen bacteria genus in uBiome Samples.
  • A finer definition would be a condition with a significant number of abnormalities in the Autoimmune profiles see this page for the current criteria .

The specific genus and their interactions determine the symptoms seen likely due to the over- or under-production of metabolites . Other autoimmune conditions may share these core shifts. The specific high and low bacteria determine the symptoms if the person was the DNA/SNP associated with the symptoms.

    4.0 – Works for me

As an adult over 40 I had suffered from a case of long term mononucleosis during most of 2011. I noticed that even after testing negative towards the end of 2011 and into 2012 that I still had major problems with fatigue, general low energy, endurance , clear thinking, etc. I was concerned that I was developing chronic fatigue syndrome, which I’d read can happen if you have a long term case of mono. I started taking this powder daily in June 2012 and noticed a significant improvement in energy and endurance, almost right away. For me, its a less expensive alternative to a lot of protien powders I’ve seen on the market and it has given me good results. I usually will take about 1/2 a scoop to a full scoop depending on if I’m supplementing a meal or using as a full meal replacement and I can make 1 container last approximately 2 months.

    2.0 – Tastes Awful
5.0 – Finally, Something That Works

I have had chronic fatigue for years. Whenever I went to the Dr. complaing of fatigue they would recommend Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and other preciptions meds. They tried to treat me for depression even though I told them I was not unhappy, just very tired.

    What Causes These Loose Junctions

Though genes are a factor, as is gluten if you are intolerant, frequent culprits are a diet low in fibre, low in plant foods and high in sugar, saturated fats, alcohol and over-processed foods.

Age also plays a part because as you get older, cells are damaged more easily and repair more slowly, so the gut becomes more vulnerable. Chronic stress can also be a factor, as can NSAID drugs and antacids.

The result is that the ratio of good to harmful bacteria in the gut gets out of balance. That then leads to inflammation which is a primary cause of later-life illnesses and indeed accelerated ageing.

A 2020 study published by the American Society for Clinical Investigation confirmed that:

Leaky gut and inflammation are commonly associated with poor health of older adults and made worse in individuals with obesity, diabetes, or reduced physical function.

The study further confirmed that a multi-strain probiotic decreased epithelial permeability, which in turn reduced inflammation in local tissues and in immune cells.

    The study concluded that:

Our findings indicate that probiotic therapies could be beneficial for preventing aging-related metabolic dysfunctions, physical decline, and inflammation, and they may promote healthy aging.
