Let me start off by saying that this is a complicated subject matter. Probiotics come in the trillions, and a lot of their functions and properties are poorly understood in the current scientific literature. No one person is an expert on this subject alone. Probiotics For Perioral Dermatitis
This fall I had my second bout with perioral dermatitis. I decided to improve my gut health by eating sauerkraut daily as well as drinking Kombucha. I also took a probiotic each morning. On my face I used only Vitamin E oil that I bought at a health store. My skin cleared up within 10 days or so. For me I think my gut health was responsible for my P.D.
Have the probiotics kept it from returning? I can clear it up, only for it to come back WORSE!
Probiotics with Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium longum.
All of these have been suggested to help eczema, I figured it was worth a try for my persistent perioral dermatitis. Topical remedies help but don’t actually make it go away.
I started taking a probiotic that contained the above 4 3x a day for the first several weeks. Then I backed it down to 1x a day, or even every other day, though I’ll bump it up again if I feel any sign of PD bumps returning.
I still occasionally get a bump or two, especially if I do something I know might trigger it , and I’m still careful about my products in general but now those rare bumps are easily & quickly squashed by a topical application of apple cider vinegar.
I have struggled with Perioral Dermatitis for five months. Of course every person will have different results, I hope my experience can shed some insight for those suffering with this painfully embarrassing condition.

Probiotics And Childhood Eczema Prevention
Eczema is common in babies and children, possibly due to the fact that their immune systems are still developing and are, therefore, more vulnerable to this condition.
While research on the use of probiotics as a treatment for childhood eczema is somewhat limited, the available studies have produced conflicting results.
In a review published in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, for example, scientists analyzed 19 clinical trials on the effectiveness of probiotics in treating atopic dermatitis in children and concluded that there is not enough evidence to support their use.
A study published in Pediatrics in 2017 examined the effect of probiotics on eczema, asthma, and rhinitis in high-risk infants. Newborns were given Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG for six months. The researchers found that early supplementation with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG did not prevent the development of eczema or asthma at age 2.
However, there’s some evidence that children whose mothers used probiotic supplements while pregnant may have a reduced risk for eczema. In a research review published in the British Journal of Nutrition, investigators looked at seven previously published clinical trials and found that the use of certain probiotics during pregnancy helped prevent eczema in children ages 2 to 7.
The review’s authors noted that, while Lactobacilli bacteria appeared to protect against eczema, supplements containing a mixture of various probiotic strains did not affect eczema development.

And last but not least, we also have probiotics that have direct antimicrobial properties against the bacteria that causes acne itself. The first of these is streptococcus salivarius.
In vitro studies have shown that that S. salivarius prevents the growth of p. acnes by producing bacteriocin-like substances. Similarly, lactococcus lactis has antimicrobial activity against p. acne by producing bacteriocins. This one however, targets p. acne in addition to Staphylococcus species which often become pathogenic for immunocompromised individuals.
L. paracasei is another strain in the lactobacillus family that shows inhibitory effects against acne. It works by reducing the skin inflammation and excess oil production that goes hand and hand with having blemishes.
This next one is less conclusive, but worth mentioning. Similar to lactobacillus, B. coagulans helps regulate immune system function and inhibits reactive oxygen species, which play a role in the formation of acne.
And lastly, two clinical trial showed that applying a lotion with Enterococcus fecalis, or 5% Lactobacillus plantarum extract reduces overall acne count, size, and erythema .

Consuming probiotics, or the “good bacteria,” similar to the trillions of microorganisms that already live in the body, in foods or as dietary supplements, might help to prevent or treat certain skin conditions, some early studies suggest.
The benefit of probiotics is that they introduce healthy bacteria to the gut and create a barrier to reduce inflammation, which can trigger certain skin conditions, said Dr. Whitney Bowe, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, who has researched the effect of probiotics on acne. She said there is compelling evidence that probiotics hold promise for treating acne and rosacea.
Another exciting area of research is the development of topical probiotics, which can be applied directly to the skin, Bowe said. Several manufacturers are currently experimenting with adding strains or extracts of probiotics to their skin care products, including moisturizers, cleansers, peels and lotions, and some products are already on the market.
Still, further study is needed to determine which strains may work best and how many of the bacteria survive once the probiotics are spread onto the skin’s surface.

Perioral dermatitis is a facial rash that typically causes dryness and inflammation around the corners of the mouth. The rash may also spread around the nose and eyes.
