Can Probiotics Be Harmful

  • Probiotics have an extensive history of apparently safe use, particularly in healthy people. However, few studies have looked at the safety of probiotics in detail, so thereâs a lack of solid information on the frequency and severity of side effects.
  • The risk of harmful effects from probiotics is greater in people with severe illnesses or compromised immune systems. When probiotics are being considered for high-risk individuals, such as premature infants or seriously ill hospital patients, the potential risks of probiotics should be carefully weighed against their benefits.
  • Possible harmful effects of probiotics include infections, production of harmful substances by the probiotic microorganisms, and transfer of antibiotic resistance genes from probiotic microorganisms to other microorganisms in the digestive tract.
  • Some probiotic products have been reported to contain microorganisms other than those listed on the label. In some instances, these contaminants may pose serious health risks.

Morning Sickness In Pregnancy

Why is this important? The increase in pregnancy hormones can cause nausea and sickness, particularly during the first trimester. There is no research specifically looking into probiotics and morning sickness. B. lactis HN019 has been shown to reduce nausea in non-pregnant women, so this may be of benefit12. Often pregnant women with nausea or sickness tend to have low energy levels and the sickness may impact their gut microbiome. Taking a probiotic helps to top up the levels of friendly bacteria and boost energy levels.

How Are Probiotics Regulated In The United States

Probiotics For Pregnant Women: Best Probiotics During ...

Government regulation of probiotics in the United States is complex. Depending on a probiotic productâs intended use, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration might regulate it as a dietary supplement, a food ingredient, or a drug.

Many probiotics are sold as dietary supplements, which donât require FDA approval before they are marketed. Dietary supplement labels may make claims about how the product affects the structure or function of the body without FDA approval, but they arenât allowed to make health claims, such as saying the supplement lowers your risk of getting a disease, without the FDAâs consent.

If a probiotic is going to be marketed as a drug for treatment of a disease or disorder, it has to meet stricter requirements. It must be proven safe and effective for its intended use through clinical trials and be approved by the FDA before it can be sold.

How To Use Culturelle® Baby Probiotics

Keeping your gut bacteria healthy is always important, including when youre pregnant. Some evidence suggests that taking probiotics during pregnancy may be one way to improve gut bacteria composition and digestive health.

One 2020 study in 49 pregnant women with obesity found that those who took a multi-strain probiotic supplement from an average of 17 weeks pregnant until delivery experienced increased gut bacteria diversity, compared with those who took a placebo (

Antibiotic Resistomedistribution Of Arg Classes And Abundance Of Args

In all three groups, we identified putative ARGs conferring resistance to nine different classes of antibiotics, including beta lactams, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, fosfomycine, sulphonamides, vancomycin, and the macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B group. Genes conferring resistance to fluoroquinolones and chloramphenicol were only detected in PEP- and NPVP-infants. Several genes encoding efflux pumps were also identified at all three sampling time points. In total 99 unique ARGs were identified, of which 28 were located on mobile genetic elements, and these latter were found in more than 80% of all infants .

Table 5. Distribution of classes of antibiotic resistance genes among infants in each group.

We found 21 different genes encoding beta-lactamases, including broad-spectrum and extended-spectrum beta lactamases . ESBL-genes were represented at all three time points in NPVP- and FTC-infants, but not detected in PEP-infants. The methicillin resistance gene was identified at 7 and 28 days of age in 11/35 NPVP-infants and 13/31 PEP-infants, but not at 4 months of age. Only one PEP-infant and four NPVP-infants were persistent fecal carriers of mecA at days 7 and 28. Vancomycin ARGs were identified at 4 months of age in 16 infants, but only four of these had received vancomycin. Many of the ARGs identified, encoded resistance to other antibiotics than those used in the NICUs.

Are Probiotics Safe During Pregnancy

Culturelle, Health & Wellness Probiotic

Probiotics are probably safe during pregnancy. However, because there is a variety of probiotics and limited research, probiotics cannot be declared safe completely. Its always best to consult your doctor about the supplements you need.

According to the National Library of Medicine and the National Institute of Health , probiotics are probably safe because current data indicates probiotic supplements are rarely absorbed. The likelihood of contracting bacteremia from taking Lactobacillus probiotics is less than 1 per 1 million, and the likelihood of acquiring fungemia from Saccharomyces boulardii is approximately 1 per 5.6 million individuals taking the probiotic.

In the limited research on probiotic use during pregnancy, there have been no associations with probiotic use and miscarriages or malformations of any kind. Furthermore, a meta-analysis by Canadian researchers found no association with probiotic use and the incidence of Caesarean section, birth weight, or gestational age.The NLM and NIH concluded there does not appear to be any risk of probiotic use for expecting, or lactating, mothers.

May Reduce The Risk Of Eczema In Infants

If youre pregnant, taking probiotics may help reduce the risk of eczema a condition characterized by red and itchy skin in you and your baby.

For example, a 2020 review associated probiotic supplements with a significantly reduced risk of eczema during pregnancy .

Plus, a 2019 review of 28 studies associated the use of probiotics during and after pregnancy with a significantly reduced risk of eczema in infants and children .

In line with this, the World Allergy Organization recommends probiotic use in those who are pregnant and infants with a family history of allergic disease .

Combined, this suggests that taking probiotic supplements may help prevent eczema in people who are pregnant and babies. That being said, the available evidence is considered low quality, and more research is needed to confirm these potential benefits.

May Reduce Depression And Anxiety

Perhaps youre researching probiotic supplements because youve heard that they can reduce the risk of or treat symptoms of depression and anxiety during and after pregnancy.

Unfortunately, even though its speculated that some strains of probiotics may have these effects, not all studies agree.

In a 2017 study in 380 women, taking a probiotic called Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 from weeks 1416 of pregnancy until 6 months after birth led to significantly lower depression and anxiety scores, compared with placebo (

21 ).

Interestingly, a 2021 study in 40 women who were pregnant found that taking a multi-species probiotic supplement from 2630 weeks of pregnancy until delivery had no effects on depression or anxiety symptoms .

A 2020 study also showed that probiotic treatment with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Bifidobacterium lactis BB12 had no effects on mental health outcomes in pregnant women .

In conclusion, theres only limited evidence that probiotics may reduce depression and anxiety during or after pregnancy.

Experiencing depression or anxiety during or after pregnancy is not uncommon, and you dont have to get through this tough time alone. Talk with a trusted healthcare professional for help and to get the right care as soon as possible.
