Bad Breath How Probiotics Can Help

Bad breath also known as halitosis is generally the result of eating certain strong-smelling foods, poor oral health, dry mouth, or smoking. More specifically, however, its caused by volatile sulphur compounds in your mouth from bacteria that degrade food proteins and salivary glands.

There has been research conducted into whether gargling with a mouthwash fortified with probiotics, such as Streptococcus salivarius, can reduce or eliminate the compounds that cause bad breath. One study discovered that using a probiotic mouthwash resulted in a significant decrease in the production of volatile sulphur compounds, which helped reduce instances of halitosis.

Another study found that 85% of test subjects who used a probiotic over the course of three days saw a reduction in the amount of bacteria that causes bad breath. Gum and lozenges containing probiotics have also shown success in fighting halitosis.

The Brand Or Manufacturer

If you decide to purchase oral probiotics, make sure you do so from a manufacturer who offers well-known and reputable products. There are several reasons why you should buy these kinds of products.

Such manufacturers would want to maintain a competitive edge in the market, and this is the reason why they have to ensure that the goods they supply are of high quality. They, therefore, would not be willing to have it known that they are slacking on quality.

It would also be easier to hold such manufacturers accountable if they happen to sell sub-standard products. This is because they have a reputation to protect. Their probiotics are also difficult to imitate, and so there is a decent level of trust between the manufacturer and its buyers.

Oral Probiotics For Candidiasis/oral Thrush

Now OralBiotic Oral Probiotics 60 lozenges : onthenose

Oral thrush, or oral candidiasis, is a fungal condition in which candida fungus overgrows and forms white spots on your tongue. Burning, redness, and dry mouth can result.

This fungal overgrowth is a common symptom of dysbiosis in the oral microbiome.

The best way to combat this condition is to stop consuming the sugars and carbs that feed the candida yeast. Along with a dietary change, high-quality oral probiotics may help prevent or reverse oral thrush.

Changing your diet will stop candida growth, as it will no longer have an adequate food source. The influx of beneficial bacteria from the oral probiotic will crowd out any remaining candida microbes.

The best oral probiotics for oral thrush/candidiasis are:

  • Lactobacillus spp.
  • S. salivarius K12

Lab research shows that dental probiotics including Lactobacillus species can stop candida from forming a biofilm in the mouth.

A 2020 clinical trial found that 30 days of the oral probiotic S. salivarius K12 decreased oral thrush symptoms. It also improved inflammation of oral tissue caused by denture stomatitis, a bacterial overgrowth on dentures.

Dental Probiotics: Has A Better Way To Fight Bad Breath Finally Been Found

One of the most common concerns for patients in the dental chair is the battle with bad breath. It is also one of the most uncomfortable topics for patients to bring up during a dental appointment. Overall, about 25% of people suffer from malodor, and it has many social implications that affect a persons overall confidence and well-being.1,2

Patients look to their dental professionals for answers to this problem, but are we providing the best solutions? Is there a better way to solve the problem of bad breath?

There are many causes for bad breath, including lack of oral hygiene, dry mouth, and ear-nose-throat issues. Eighty-five percent of the time breath malodor arises from insufficient oral hygiene, such as periodontitis, coating of the tongue, and lack of plaque control. These conditions in the mouth favor the formation and microbial degradation of offensive smelling volatile sulfur compounds .

Methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulfide, and dimethyl sulfide are three of the most well-known VSCs, which form from gram-negative anaerobic bacteria. Hydrogen sulfide smells like rotten eggs, and methyl mercaptan smells like rotten cabbage.3 Even more strange, the smell of dimethyl sulfide is comparable to rotten seaweed.

Could Oral Probiotics Be The Missing Link To Dental Health

Research and science is very promising for the future of your dental health. Many dental problems are created by the buildup of undesirable bacteria in your mouth. Adding beneficial bacteria with oral probiotics can reduce the amount of harmful bacteria and restore good bacteria.

Clinical studies have shown the benefits of certain probiotic bacteria strains, like the ones in PRO-Dental oral probiotics and Great Oral Health Advanced oral probiotics. These benefits include treating and preventing problems associated with bacteria in the oral cavity. Among these problems are gum disease, cavities and bad breath. They may also boost your immune system and help reduce ear, nose and throat infections.

This may be the missing link to dental health we have been waiting for! I know you will be amazed at the results and look forward to hearing your positive experiences. Please leave your comments and any questions below and I would be happy to help!

Product Life Of The Probiotic

How To Use THE BURST Probiotics

You should always select a product that has a decent shelf life. If the product life is short, you will end up incurring losses, as it will mean that you have to toss out expired products. Knowing the life length of the product is also vital in planning for your orders.

It is not uncommon for people to order probiotics, only for them to arrive way past their expiration date. This can be quite a bother. Ensure that the shelf life is long in order to avert these kinds of losses.

A product with a long shelf life will save you money, as it will mean that you will not have to incur costs frequently replacing them. It also allows you to buy in bulk, which is cheaper.

Summary Of Available Evidence

Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment are linked with significant biofilm accumulation, thus exposing them to a greater risk of caries and gingivitis . Nowadays, several reports have investigated probiotic effects in enhancing oral health in the general dental population, but, up to date, their effectiveness remains inconclusive . To the best of our knowledge, studies solely focusing on the clinical effects on orthodontic patients have not been previously summarized in an evidence-based manner.

Based on the data presented in this systematic review, there is a moderate level of evidence that administering probiotics to orthodontic patients does not have an effect on WSL development and gingival inflammation in the short-term, while no marked adverse effects were noted. Studies investigating the effect of probiotics on various microbiological parameters during orthodontic treatment have been conflicting . The lack of significant results presented in the current systematic review might be attributed to various causes, including the use of inappropriate and ineffective bacterial strains, ineffective concentrations of bacteria and administration protocols, ineffectiveness of the selected probiotic strain to colonize effectively the oral environment or strain inability to compete with the bacteria and biofilm accumulation present in the oral cavity .

My Personal Experience With Dental Probiotics

While writing this article, I decided to try dental probiotics on myself as an experiment on their efficacy. Ive always had problems with morning breath, and the possibility of waking up without that yucky taste in my mouth sounded appealing. I also have many issues with my sinuses and allergies, and these lead to my breath not being as fresh as I would like.

I bought a product called Pro-Dental by Hyperbiotics that I found on Amazon. The product had some great reviews, so I thought it was worth a try. Pro-Dental contains the S. salivarius strains K12 and M18 that were shown to be highly effective in the research. The probiotics come in a lozenge that can be either chewed or left to dissolve in the mouth. The recommended dosage is one to two tablets a day to be taken after brushing or using a mouth rinse. One lozenge contains three billion colony-forming units.9

When I began using the product, I was very skeptical, and I wondered how much it would really help me. But as the days went by, I was amazed by the results. When I woke up in the morning, I no longer noticed the stale breath that I was so accustomed to. My mouth felt fresh. The lozenges were also quite palatable, with a slightly sweet mint flavor.

The Advantage Of Using Oral Probiotics

Over-the-counter dental products used for fighting bad breath focus on masking the odor or attempting to kill bacterial culprits in the oral cavity. Some of these products specifically target VSCs. The problem with this is that bacteria repopulate quickly, so the relief from bad breath is usually short-lived.4 Another aspect to consider is that when a bacterial population is reduced, something always replaces it, whether good or bad. This is where dental probiotics step in to combat bad breath in an entirely different way.

Dental probiotics focus on promoting the growth of good bacteria in the oral cavity and curtailing the growth of pathogenic bacteria. There are normally more than 700 different bacterial species found in the human mouth.5 With dental probiotics, daily exposure helps to colonize the oral cavity with bacteria that do not produce VSCs. Research has shown that 85% of people who took oral probiotics for one week experienced a significant reduction in volatile sulfur compounds.4 Even more impressive is the fact that the majority of study participants maintained a reduced level of VSCs for two weeks following exposure to oral probiotics. With this treatment modality, there is finally potential for a more long-term solution to bad breath.

Helps With Bad Breath

Most products that are sold to freshen breath focus on one of two approaches:

  • Masking odor
  • Killing the bacteria that cause halitosis

Bad breath is most commonly caused by a group of bacteria that produce smelly volatile sulfur compounds as they break down foods.

The rotten eggs odor some people associate with unpleasant breath usually comes from a VSC called hydrogen sulfide, while others such as methyl mercaptan smell like rotten cabbage.

Because bacteria repopulate quickly, methods that mask odor or kill the bacteria tend to have pretty short-term effects.

Dental probiotics take a different approach. Instead of trying to kill the strains of bacteria that cause halitosis, dental probiotics introduce beneficial strains that compete with them.

In this study, 85% of the participants who took an oral probiotic containing two strains of Streptococcus salivarius K12 and M18 experienced a significant reduction in VSC-producing bacteria in just one week. Even better, they maintained these lowered levels for two weeks after the last lozenge.

Some of the strains that have been specifically found to be helpful for freshening breath are:

  • Streptococcus salivarius K12
  • Lactobacillus salivarius WB21

Manage Symptoms Of Gingivitis

A study from 2006 suggests that probiotics can reduce symptoms of gingivitis. Gingivitis is also known as gum disease. It can cause swollen, tender gums and sensitive teeth.

The researchers gave 59 people with gingivitis a supplement containing either a probiotic bacterium known as Lactobacillus reuteri or a placebo. The participants returned two weeks later. The researchers found that the gingivitis symptoms had improved the most in the group taking the highest dose of probiotics. The people taking probiotics also had less plaque.
