Can Probiotics Get Rid Of Uti

There Is No Single Natural Uti Remedy That Will Cure All Utis

How to Cure a UTI Naturally with Probiotics and Diet

While we arent about conveying a message of good vs. bad when it comes to UTI treatment, we want to issue the same caution about UTI home remedies that we have for UTI antibiotics

There is no single natural UTI remedy that will cure all UTIs.

The cause of your recurrent UTI is very unlikely to be the cause of the next persons recurrent UTI. And the only way you can discover the cause of your UTIs is to seek accurate testing.

Only when you know whats causing your UTIs, can you begin to look for the right treatment.

Dont cherry pick UTI home remedies from forums just because an online stranger sounds very convincing.

Dont find someone whose story sounds similar to yours and commit to the natural UTI remedy they swear by.

And think about this: If their UTI remedy works every time they get a UTI, but the UTIs keep coming back, theres a good chance the remedy isnt working. It may be relieving their symptoms, but its probably not addressing the chronic infection thats causing their symptoms to return over and over again.

The goal of any UTI treatment should be to clear an underlying urinary tract infection permanently, not temporarily.

Improving Gut Function & Health

Aging is not fun. If you are over thirty, your body starts to slack on many fronts. Some of these biological changes affect how you digest your food. With age often comes reduced amounts of gastric, pancreatic and other digestive system secretions.

Things you should do:

  • With your doctors permission stop anti-acid medicine. In short: it doesnt solve the issue, only covers the symptom and has potential side-effects you do not need.
  • Instead, start taking digestive enzymes.

The best way to choose enzymes is based on your stool analysis done in a naturopathic clinic. They can tell you if you are having problems digesting certain types of nutrients and suggest a blend based on the results.

Alternatively, you could try an enzyme blend and see if it makes a difference in how you feel. Since your situation is unique as well as your diet, there really is no one right or best enzyme formula for everyone.

If you feel bloated and just starting to include veggies and beans, Beano enzyme could be a great option. For the rest, choose from any . Make sure to read the descriptions, warnings, and reviews to find a combination that better suits your case.

What You Should Do

If youre exhibiting symptoms of a UTI, first and foremost, call your doctor. The doctor will advise to do a urine test to determine whether or not you have an acute infection. The sooner you catch and treat a UTI, the better.

In many cases, you will have to take an antibiotic to kill the bacteria that are causing the infection in your urinary tract. If you are suffering from recurrent UTIs, you might want to consider seeing a doctor specializing in urology and/or womens health, in addition to your regular physician.

However, the best case scenario is staying a step ahead of an acute infection and looking to preventative measures for support. These also will help with the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infection.

Nd Step: Take Probiotics For Uti Prevention

Probiotics help keep the gut healthy. It restores normal gut bacterial balance, and ensures E. coli and other pathogenic bacteria are under control. But where exactly can you find probiotics?

Well, fermented foods naturally contain probiotics. A few examples are yogurt, pickles, miso, sauerkraut, kimchi, some kinds of cheese, and sourdough bread. These are all delicious foods, but when it comes to UTI prevention, theres a better option probiotic capsules!

Studies show that probiotic capsules taken orally can change not just the bacterial balance in the gut, but also in the vagina. This is obviously great news for all the women out there!

Now, the thing is there is a close correlation between a change in the normal microbiota in the vagina and an increased likelihood of developing a UTI . And since the vaginas microbiome is predominantly made up of Lactobacillus strains, its therefore not all that surprising that Lactobacillus probiotic capsules can replenish the vaginal microbiome .

    Here are some notable findings:

In Finland, a study showed that drinking kefir 3 times a week reduced UTIs .

Another study tested probiotic supplements against antibiotics for a year in a group of women who suffered from recurrent UTIs. They found that in women who were given antibiotics for a year, the average number of UTIs went down from 7 to 2.9. For women given probiotics, the average number went down from 6.8 to 3.3 .

How Wild Oregano Oil Works For Utis

The main components of wild oregano oil are the isomer phenols carvacrol and thymol. Carvacrol in particular has been the subject of numerous studies, as it has been demonstrated to have strong antimicrobial properties. The antibacterial activity of carvacrol has been put down to its effect on the structure and function of bacterial membranes. At high enough concentrations, carvacrol severely damages cells.

    Treatment Concerns For Antibiotics

While most UTIs can be effectively managed and treated with a course of antibiotics, more and more bacteria are becoming resistant to different types of antibiotics due to mutations in their genetic code. Every time you take an antibiotic, the bacteria that are in your system are more likely to adapt and mutate and become resistant to the administered antibiotic. And since recurrence rates in the case of UTIs are high, its a strong possibility that an antibiotic may not be effective every time. Many antibiotics such as ampicillin, amoxicillin, and sulfonamides are no longer effective against stronger mutated bacteria and hence are not a good choice for combatting these infections.

Antibiotics can also have adverse effects on the flora of the gut and the vagina. Many antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones cannot be prescribed to pregnant women because of the concerns that they might have a possible toxic effect on the fetus.

Other health risks and adverse effects associated with antibiotics for the treatment of urinary tract infections include extreme allergic reactions and numerous side effects. These can include:

    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Rashes
    • Headaches

Another potential risk of taking antibiotics is that they might destroy some of the good bacteria residing in your system that help with your systematic bodily functions without harming you. The death of these bacteria opens up the passageway to a whole new range of possible infections.

    Can You Boost Cephalexin Performance

However, if you truly want Cephalexin to work, make sure to boost the performance of antibiotics with bacterial biofilm enzymes and a diet that keeps your urine alkaline.

Havent heard about bacterial biofilms? In a nutshell, the bacteria group together on the surface of your bladder and release slime to protect themselves from antibiotics.

What to expect when taking Cephalexin?

    • Once you start taking antibiotics, you should feel better within the first 8-12 hours. However, make sure to finish all pills regardless of how well you feel.
    • If you are not feeling better or if your symptoms are getting worse, if you start having any flank pain, or feel nausea and weakness, call your doctor.
    • Cephalexin might not work if you have a type of bacteria that are resistant to this antibiotic. However, in some cases, resistance could be mistaken with bacterial biofilms.

    Why Antibiotics Sometimes Dont Work

One Easy Way To Prevent (and Get Rid Of) Urinary Tract Infections UTIs For Women

Most UTIs arent serious. But if left untreated, the infection can spread up to the kidneys and bloodstream and become life threatening. Kidney infections can lead to kidney damage and kidney scarring.

Symptoms of a UTI usually improve within 2 to 3 days after starting antibiotic therapy. Many doctors prescribe an antibiotic for at least 3 days.

While this type of medication is the standard treatment, researchers are noticing that antibiotic-resistant bacteria are reducing the effectiveness of some antibiotics in treating UTIs.

Some UTIs dont clear up after antibiotic therapy. When an antibiotic medication doesnt stop the bacteria from causing an infection, the bacteria continue to multiply.

The overuse or misuse of antibiotics is often the reason for antibiotic resistance. This can happen when the same antibiotic is prescribed over and over again for recurrent UTIs. Because of this risk, experts have been looking for ways to treat UTIs without antibiotics.

Some research has shown that UTIs can be treated without traditional antibiotics by targeting E. colis surface component for adhesion, FimH.

Typically, the urinary tract flushes away bacteria when you urinate. But according to researchers, FimH can cause E. coli to firmly attach to the cells in the urinary tract. And because of this tight grip, its hard for the body to naturally flush the bacteria from the urinary tract.

    Could Probiotics Help With Cystitis

As a healthcare professional you are probably aware that cystitis is inflammation of the bladder typically caused by a bladder infection, making urination extremely painful. It mostly occurs in sexually active women for some it is rare and for others it can happen several times a year. Symptoms include a frequent sensation of needing to pass urine even when little or no urine is present, blood in the urine, backache, lower abdominal pain, and nausea.

You may want to let patients know that they can help prevent cystitis by drinking plenty of water, taking cranberry supplements or sugar-free juice, wiping correctly after going to the toilet, and always urinating as soon as possible after sexual intercourse. Some women find that using condoms can help avoid infection. Keeping your middle warm, especially in cold weather, can also offer some protection – Some women also find that keeping their tummy warm can help – with extra layers or perhaps a Japanese haramaki tummy wrap. Short-term antibiotics are often prescribed for serious bouts of cystitis.

    Following Hygienic Sexual Habits

Hygienic sexual habits certainly save you from terrible urinary tract infection. Men should more proactively maintain the hygiene of their private parts. This is because bacteria tend to grow rapidly under the foreskin of the penis if you do not maintain proper hygiene.

Here are a few tips you can follow:

-Pass urine before and after sexual intercourse.-Always use protection while having sex.-Properly wash your intimate area, especially the foreskin of the penis.-Make sure that your partner does not have any UTI.-Never use the same condom for vaginal and anal sex.

These hygiene practices will limit the chances of transmission of infections through sexual intercourse.

    Best Probiotics For Cystitis

Clinical trials have shown that a number of strains of Lactobacillus are particularly effective at helping to support vaginal health in those with female intimate health problems such as cystitis. A study2 showed that taking a probiotic containing various strains of Lactobacillus, amongst other interventions including cranberry tablets, resulted in significant health improvements and symptom relief. These specific strains have been clinically trialled to survive transit through the gut, and then successfully colonise the vagina and bladder where they exert their beneficial effects3. In a large clinical trial4 involving 252 post-menopausal women, it was found that after a period of twelve months, the occurrence of UTIs was reduced by 50% in the women who were given a combination of the above two strains. This was equally as effective as antibiotic treatment, but in those who were treated with antibiotics there was also a 90% rate of antibiotic resistance. This demonstrates that specific probiotics could perform to the same standard as antibiotics, without the risk of pathogens developing resistance.

Can D Mannose Cure A Uti

During the studys six-month period, 98 of the patients experienced a recurrent UTI. Unsurprisingly, the rate of recurrent UTI was highest in the group that received no treatment at about 60 percent. The rate of recurrence was about 15 percent in the D-mannose group and about 20 percent in the nitrofurantoin group.5

Patients who received D-mannose also had a significantly lower risk of experiencing any adverse side effects compared to those given nitrofurantoin, though the latter was generally well-tolerated.

D-mannose side effects were minimal. About 8 percent of those given D-mannose experienced episodes of diarrhea, but this was the only known side effect and did not require discontinuation. Ultimately, this suggests that D-mannose is comparable to nitrofurantoin in preventing recurrent urinary tract infections.5

More studies are necessary to determine the optimal dosage and the potential side effects. Those with diabetes should be cautious with D-mannose as it is a natural sugar and may cause fluctuations in blood sugar. Some evidence shows an association between high doses of D-mannose and kidney damage, but more research is necessary to confirm this.6

What The Probiotics Research Tells Us

Given the close relationship between vaginal flora and UTI, studies often cover both and you will note this in the results below. Studies have focussed on evaluating the use of oral probiotics, as well as probiotic vaginal pessaries, with some very promising results.

    Probiotics studies:

    • The effectiveness of different strains of probiotics on vaginal health
    • Whether different strains of probiotics reduce the recurrence of UTI
    • A comparison of the effectiveness of oral and vaginal probiotics

    What was found:

    • Specific Lactobacilli strains may prevent adherence, growth, and formation of uropathogenic bacteria.
    • The use of vaginal pessaries with Lactobacillus crispatus in premenopausal females was associated with a significant reduction in recurrent UTI.
    • Oral capsules with Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri in postmenopausal females are promising.
    • Probiotics containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus fermentum were shown to normalize the vaginal flora, reduce recurrence of UTI, and may be a possible long-term therapy for pregnant females and those susceptible to UTI.
    • Insertion of Lactobacilli into the vagina provides a better cure rate than using an antibiotic alone.
    • For some females, up to 77%, episodes of recurrent UTI may be reduced for at least one year after discontinuing use of vaginal probiotics.
    • In vitro studies have shown that Lactobacillus strains can disrupt bacterial vaginosis and yeast biofilms and inhibit the growth of urogenital pathogens.

Rd Step: Take Cranberry Juice And D

How to Get Rid of a Urinary Tract Infection | Premium Health Care & Fitness

So weve already seen that supplementing with probiotics for UTI is virtually as effective as antibiotics for preventing infections. And probiotics can reduce them by over 50% with none of the dangerous side effects of antibiotics.

With proper hygiene practices, we can reduce this even more, but what if we took it to another level? We can do this by also supplementing with cranberry juice and D-mannose.

Cranberry juice has long been used as a home remedy to treat UTIs. It was initially believed that cranberries somehow made the urine more acidic, which made it difficult for infectious bacteria to grow there .

However, we now understand that cranberry juice works because it contains 2 compounds that stop the E. coli bacteria from being able to stick to the cells lining the urinary tract .

These are the 2 compounds found in cranberry juice:

  • D-mannose its a naturally occurring sugar known as mannose sensitive
  • Proanthocyanidin a condensed tannin that is mannose resistant
  • Heres an illustration on the mechanism of D-mannose against UTI-causing bacteria:

As seen in the first image above, there are finger-like projections that come from the E. coli bacteria called fimbriae that the E. coli use to stick onto the cells on the walls of the urinary tract. They use the small sticky adhesins at the end of their fingers to do the sticking. These adhesins are either mannose sensitive or mannose resistant .
