Reasons Probiotic Drinks Are Better Than Supplements
I am often asked what the difference is between probiotic drinks and foods, and probiotic capsules and powders. There are many differences and they include the following:
1. Probiotic drinks and foods are live and the bacteria is active. This means when it gets to your intestines it goes right to work. Pill and powder probiotics supplements take up to 6 hours to colonize in your intestines .
2. Lactofermentation, such as the process used by Drink La Vie, creates lactic acid as a by-product of fermentation which means the bacterial culture is already living in an acidic environment. When it gets to the acidic environment of your stomach, it can pass through unscathed. Most probiotic supplements cannot survive the stomach acids.
3. With lactofermentation, the fermented foods retain their vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids . In fact, the bacteria makes the nutrients more available to your body so you get even more out of the fermented foods than if you simply ate them.
4. Bacteria need prebiotics to thrive. Prebiotics are plant fiber and are not included in probiotic capsules but are found in probiotic foods and drinks. Research has shown that to increase the levels of bacteria in your gut you need to have prebiotics as well as probiotics.
Should You Take A Daily Probiotic Supplement
Probiotics are good for your gut, but the source matters.
Theres a lot of buzz around probiotics. Theyre endorsed by celebrities and fill grocery stores aisles.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that promote a healthy gut. Scientists believe they could unlock a deeper understanding of our health. Probiotics are found in some foods and drinks, like yogurt or fermented tea.
Just like vitamins, probiotics are available as supplements. Manufacturers make steep claims about their benefits. They include digestive health, strengthened immune system, weight loss and reduced cancer risk. But can a supplement really do all that?
To learn more about probiotic supplements, we spoke with Carrie Daniel- MacDougall, Ph.D., M.P.H., a nutritional epidemiologist at MD Anderson who studies diet and the microbiome.
Heres what you should know about probiotic supplements.
Its always better to get nutrients from food. That includes probiotics.
More research needs to be done on probiotics in general and probiotic supplements, but its always better to get your nutrients from food rather than supplements, Daniel-MacDougall says. They just dont deliver the same benefits as food.
One reason is because supplements arent regulated as closely as medications. So the quality and ingredients can vary greatly from product to product.
Unless your doctor is prescribing probiotics for a specific purpose, stick to getting them from foods like yogurt that may have other nutrients, like calcium.
Delivery Of Viable Functional Probiotic Bacteria
With commercial food products, cheeses have been commonly used as carriers for probiotic delivery. Ong et al. showed the ability of three batches of cheddar cheese to deliver a variety of probiotic bacteria. Results showed that the Cheddar cheeses can be an effective vehicle for delivery of the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains tested. Fresh cheese was also found to be a suitable vehicle for the oral administration of B. bifidum, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactococcus lactis, L. acidophilus, and Lactobacillus paracasei . A study conducted on the ability of cheese to deliver L. acidophilus and L. paracasei was done by influencing the stage during the cheese making process at which the probiotic was added. All tests conducted showed an increase of intestinal flora after ingestion of the probiotic cheese . Similar studies were conducted by Phillips et al. to deliver probiotics through cheddar cheese with results showing significant increases in all species tested except for L. acidophilus Bergamini et al. and Ong and Shah also showed the ability of Argentinean and cheddar cheese respectively to deliver probiotic bacteria to the human GIT.

Are Liquid Or Tablet Probiotics Better For You Get The Facts
A number of probiotic supplements in the form of capsules, pills, and probiotic drinks are available today, which can help you fulfill your daily probiotic requirements.
It can be somewhat confusing to pick and choose among the different forms of probiotics to find one that best suits your purpose.
Whether you are interested in taking probiotics to improve your digestive health, build immunity, or you are seeking probiotics to get relief from a specific illness, it is vital to determine just how to get those friendly bacteria into your system again just like California needs to figure out how to stop all those jobs from leaving to other low tax states but it does not seem like they will be able to do that though lets get back on the right track here.
Vitamin D Absorbed Better In Gummy Format
Vitamin D is an extremely popular supplement and is currently recommended by Public Health England to be consumed by the entire UK population to support healthy bones and muscle. A recent study looked to establish whether Vitamin D supplements are best absorbed when taken as a pill or gummy.
The study found that there was a significant increase in the bio-availability of Vitamin D prepared in gummy than those manufactured in tablets. The factors for this result were multiple but included the preparation and coating of the gummy and the way in which they are consumed. The study suggested that gummies are chewed and their dissolution begins in the mouth when combined with saliva, and then continues throughout the body which gives them greater bio-availability than pills which are swallowed whole.
Something we plan to do at Nourished is continue research in this field as we grow, to test more vitamins and run more trials to observer the absorption and release within our gummy form. We believe strongly we will see the benefits and we will be able to tailor our product further to give consumers even great benefits through this research.

Can Liquid Probiotics Be Frozen
Due to the relatively short shelf-life of most liquid probiotics, some wonder if they can be frozen, and then defrosted as required. The answer to this question will likely differ from product to product. In general, though, it is not a good idea to freeze liquid probiotics, as it could damage the probiotic bacteria.
Enhanced Coatings For Stability And Physiological Protection Of Probiotics
Delivery systems used for the delivery of probiotics include the use of coated beads, capsules and tablets. A study conducted by Krasaekoopt et al. showed the effectiveness of alginate beads in the delivery of both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium bacteria. The formulated beads were composed of sodium alginate and chitosan which were both coated and uncoated. Results showed that after exposure to simulated human gastric and intestinal fluid with or without bile salt, the chitosan coated beads showed the highest survival rate of Lactobacillus bacteria and that the Bifidobacterium bacteria did not survive exposure to the gastric media, even when coated. Iannitti and Palmieri also stated that Lactobacillus bacteria do possess gastric-protective properties compared to other species of bacteria which would result in the survival of Lactobacillus bacteria and not the Bifidobacterium bacteria. Kaushal and Shao stated that Lactobacillus sp have the ability to survive exposure to gastric acid. A similar study was conducted by Brachkova et al. , which showed the possibility of delivering different probiotic bacteria species through alginate beads. This study also showed that alginate beads can be used to deliver probiotics effectively to the human intestine while providing protection for the bacteria against the harsh gastric environment.

Easy For Anyone To Take
We all seem to go through an inevitable phase of childhood where we just cant swallow pills. The bigger the capsule, the more we fight it. So when we get sick and have to take antibiotics, for example, does our doctor throw their hands up in frustration and claim theres nothing they can do?
Absolutely not. They give us liquid medication instead. Easy as that!
With liquid vitamins, all you have to do is squeeze a spoonful or pour it into a cup and swallow. Technically, this isnt directly related to absorption in that its more about someones personal preference and their ability to swallow pills. However, if you cant actually ingest the vitamin supplementwhich is the case for many children and elderly folksthen youre certainly not absorbing the nutrients either.
Should You Keep Your Probiotics In The Fridge
Keeping your yogurt in the fridge is a no-brainer. But is it necessary to keep probiotic supplements in the fridge? Probiotic foods and supplements must be carefully produced and stored to reap the benefits of live microorganisms. Foods or supplements with live probiotics can have a short shelf-life and often require refrigeration. However, not all probiotics supplements require refrigeration. Check the packaging of the supplements you buy for more specific information.

Why Is The Mother So Healthy
The mother consists of thousands of strands of amino acids and healthy bacteria, which are also known as probiotics. The beneficial organisms in probiotics are vital for maintaining a healthy gut flora and keeping the immune system strong.
The gut flora is a crucial part of our internal ecosystem because of the many roles it plays in digestion, absorbing nutrients, and protecting us against harmful germs, which is why it is important to keep levels of healthy bacteria up to help flush harmful microbes out.
The mother also consists of various enzymes that help to breakdown foods, making nutrients much easier for the body to digest. While most of the foods we eat also contain these specific enzymes, most of them are destroyed when we cook them, so we dont have much chance of reaping their benefits. The mother in an apple cider vinegar pill or liquid is a great way to supplement these enzymes and probiotics.
Liquid Probiotics: The Easiest Way To Take Probiotics
Clearly, probiotics are a great choice to improve your gut health. But who likes to take all those pills every day?
Instead, many are looking to incorporate liquid probiotics into their routine. After all, its much easier to drink a liquid probiotic you like the taste of than to have to struggle to remember to take probiotic pills every day.
There are different ways to take liquid probiotics, too. There are some naturally-occurring probiotics in beverages like kombucha or kvass, for example.
But there are also products on the market that incorporate probiotics into beverages.
The benefit of using a product that takes a specific probiotic strain and incorporates it into a liquid probiotic is that you can be more specific about the particular probiotic strain youre taking — you have less of a say in this when youre drinking a naturally-occurring liquid probiotic like kombucha.
Probiotic strain is important to consider because it determines the effects that a probiotic has on your body. For example, some probiotic strains are wonderful for skin health while other probiotic strains are better for digestive health.
When youre after a specific effect, you want to be careful about the probiotic strain you choose. But luckily, there are a few liquid probiotics on the market that clarify the strain they incorporate.

What Are The Side Effects And Risks Of Probiotics
Supplements play an important role when the diet is not adequate to supply our needs. In the case of probiotics, one’s diet is the ideal source for probiotics. These are live bacteria and need to be carefully monitored, stored, and combined for the health benefits that one would be taking them for. At this time, probiotic supplements are not monitored in the U.S. the way that food or medication is. They fall under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 . This requires that the dietary supplement or dietary ingredient manufacturer be responsible for ensuring that a dietary supplement or ingredient is safe before it is marketed. The only time that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration may get involved is if action is needed to be taken against a manufacturer after the supplement is marketed and then found to be unsafe. This means that as much as we may know about probiotics, we can’t be certain of the safety or content of the supplements available to us.

Whether you are interested in probiotics for building immunity and maintaining health, or you have a specific illness you are seeking relief from, it can be a challenge to wade through the literature and determine just how to get those friendly bacteria into your system again. In this article well get to the bottom of sachets, tablets, capsules, and juices, and figure out what is the best method to get probiotics into your system.
Types of Probiotic Supplements
Walk into your local health food store, and you are likely to be confronted with a host of different types of probiotic supplements. Of course, we all know about acidophilus in yogurt, but what about all the other supplements out there? Here is a brief rundown of some of the most common:
Capsules are one of the easiest forms of probiotics to take. Different brands contain different organisms and quantities, so it is important to read labels carefully to see what really comes in the bottle.
Which is Best?
- Has it been stored according to manufacturers recommendations?
- Does it show to be viable to a certain date, rather than just viable at production?
- What are the recommended uses?
- Are specific strains listed?
- What is the quantity of organisms contain in each dose?
- Does it contain live, active cultures?
Myth: Probiotics Can Replace Medications
Although some people may prefer natural treatments, probiotics have typically been studied in conjunction with medications â not as a substitute for them.
“I would never advocate stopping a medication and switching to a probiotic,” Hibberd said. Instead, people should use probiotics as additions to their existing treatment programs, or preventively so they might avoid the need for a medication down the road, she explained.
Health Benefits Of Probiotics
Probiotic bacteria are currently classified as nutraceuticals and account for billions in sales annually . Nutraceuticals are defined as dietary substances that deliver a concentrated form of a bioactive substance in quantities that exceed what can be obtained from food . Intestinal flora supplementation through the use of probiotics has been shown through many studies for the prevention and treatment of conditions caused by pathogenic bacteria. This treatment has been shown to occur due to the probiotics competitive inhibition of pathogenic bacteria through adhesion and colonization of binding sites in the small intestine . It is this preventive role, among others, of intestinal flora thats of vital importance for the health and overall well-being of humans.
Should I Eat Before Taking A Probiotic
Taking a probiotic after or during your meal may negate some of the benefits of the supplement due to busy digestion efforts in your gut. But Dr. Asike explains that some bacterial strains are naturally more resistant to stomach acid, and can be taken with meals safely in some cases, multiple times a day. You’ll likely see printed language on your chosen probiotic packaging that indicates it’s safe to take with meals.

The Best Of The Best: How To Choose The Right Liquid Vitamin
On the whole, we can conclude that liquid vitamins are more effective than pills. But as with anything else, theres a hierarchy within that.
To find supplements that offer the best possible absorption, look for these key features:
- Made with the most bioavailable forms of vitamins There are already so many vitamins on the market, but each vitamin typeC or B12 or K, for examplecomes in various forms. For premium absorption, look for versions that have high bioavailability. Some top choices include:
- Coenzyme forms of B12, including methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin
- Folate , the most easily converted form of B9
- Vitamin K2 in its MK-7 form
Where can you find all this and more? Thats the easiest question so far.
