Gum Disease: When Your Oral Flora And Immune Cells Disagree

First, lets discuss what causes your gums to bleed.

Gum disease starts off as low-level inflammation in your body.

The classical definition of gum disease purely focusses on the presence of disease. It says the build-up of plaque on teeth and root surfaces causes gum inflammation. This progresses to gum disease.

This definition blames harmful microbes for gum disease. However, your oral flora is present in health as well. Gum disease is caused by oral imbalance, not simply a few bad bacteria.

Your oral microbiome is the entire microbial environment of your mouth. It contains many thousands of microbes. A microbiome view of gum disease helps us consider if oral probiotics can combat your gum disease.

Oral Or Topical Probiotics

For treating acne, researchers suggest that probiotics can be applied topically, orally or both.

Topical probiotics form a barrier that shields your skin against harmful bacteria and toxins. This prevents them from getting into your skin and causing an immune system response. The probiotics antimicrobial property also helps your skin fight back and kill the bad bacteria before it does any harm.

Oral probiotic supplements, on the other hand, help your body fight acne from within.

When your body detects harmful foreign bodies, it automatically triggers your immune system to fight back. Yet, there are times when your bodys responses overreact. They tell your body to fight back even when there is no intruder. This creates an unnecessary inflammation which can turn to full-blown acne.

Probiotics create a healthy gut flora which improves that immune reaction. It calms inflammatory responses thus lowering the risk for acne breakouts.

Antibiotics are also commonly used to treat acne. However, with the growing number of people who have developed resistance to antibiotics, probiotics are a great alternative. It is a bacteria that is already present in your body thus there is a lesser chance for your body to develop an adverse reaction to it.

At this point, I feel as though my facial skin is back to normal. I plan to take 2-3 more capsules every few days since I only have 4 left and cant order more until next month.

Im just glad that I finally figured out how to get rid of pimples on my forehead overnight because it was starting to gross me out, especially since Im 34.

I dont like washing my face too much either, so finding a better alternative to a facial cleanser that works makes me happy as well.

Before today, I didnt know that probiotics worked so well to get rid of acne. Next time, Ill skip over the months of acne by taking the probiotics immediately. Plus, Ill avoid future breakouts by taking the probiotic at least once a week.

Are Probiotics Good For Acne

The benefits of probiotics may be noticeable for gut health, but can they serve as an acne treatment or pave the way to clear skin?

Current research does not fully explain the interaction between acne flare-ups and probiotics, but it does show a connection between the two.

There are two ways to use probiotics in the treatment of acne: topically and internally. When used topically, or applied to the skins surface, probiotics can act as a helper in the skins protective shield, striving to keep in a favored balance over unwanted microorganisms.

When taken internally, as a supplement or eating fermented foods, probiotics can help balance the ratios to more favorable bacteria inside your body. As we have seen before, inflammation in the gut can actually trigger skin inflammation. With a balanced gut-skin connection, you can reduce your bodys overall inflammation and even prevent acne from forming.

First Of All What Are Probiotics

Best Probiotics for Digestion, Acne, IBS, Leaky Gut, Weight Loss, Candida, Stress etc

While you might automatically associate the word “bacteria” with things like food poisoning and Petri dishes, not all bacteria is bad for you. Enter probiotics, which are live, friendly bacteria that benefit your overall health and your skin. They help you digest food, combat against environmental damage, and strengthen the immune system, Bowe says.

TL DR: When your body’s “good” bacteria is thriving, your skin will, too.

Your body naturally contains tons of bacteria to help it function properly, says Bowe. This is called the microbiome. “There are more than one trillion bacteria in the skin, originating from approximately one thousand different species,” says Bowe.

A recent study has proven that people with acne actually have a completely different arrangement of gut bacteria and fungus compared to those without acne. The study found that those with acne had less gut diversity AND an undesirable balance of particular bacterial families in the gut. While the study isn’t proving acne is caused from dysbiosis it is solidifying the theory that those with acne likely have dysbiosis, and in my opinion, certainly supports the need for gut support in the journey of healing your skin. This study also supports the theory behind the link between gut health and acne. Therefore, for many of my clients, I start them on probiotics to help acne. In my practice, I’ve found that the right probiotic is an integral part of the best acne treatment for my individual clients. There’s also the issue of potentially making digestive symptoms worse- when certain conditions are present taking a probiotic may make you feel worse and unfortunately won’t do much for your skin.

While we don’t know if the bacteria is getting to the intestines in this form, we can definitely start working on the microbiome of the mouth- which can effect your gut health . Read more about that here.

Do Probiotics Help Acne

Several studies, using a variety of different probiotic strains, have shown positive effects on acne.

The studies also show that probiotics might help:

  • Restore a healthy skin barrier function: People with acne tend to have an impaired skin barrier function, so this is intriguing.
  • Reduce skin oil production: Generally speaking, less skin oil means less acne.

As a side note, taking probiotics at the same time as taking oral antibiotics may also help people tolerate the antibiotic better.6,9-11 This is relevant to acne because oral antibiotics are sometimes prescribed to treat acne.

A 1987 study found that acne patients who took a probiotic supplement containing L. acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum strains along with an antibiotic not only showed improvement in their acne but also tolerated the antibiotic better.6

A 2011 study in the European Journal of Dermatology found in the lab thata probiotic containing Lactobacillus paracasei reduced skin inflammation and accelerated recovery of the skin’s protective barrier.9

While it may seem obvious, certain lifestyle factors and habits can play a large role in your bodys ability to combat acne. To this end, drink plenty of water, try to get seven to eight hours of sleep every night, and be wary of foods that place any extra processing burden on your liver and kidneys including harsh skin creams that enter your system transdermally.

Also, if you arent regularly eating probiotic rich foods or those containing the prebiotics that help the probiotics in your gut to thrive, avoid eating foods that promote inflammation in the first place. These include processed sugar and starch-heavy foods, along with non-fermented dairy products.

What Is Gut Bacteria

Gut bacteria, also called the gut microbiota or microbiome, is the bacteria that lives in the gastrointestinal tract . Trillions of bacteria of many different species live in the human gut. According to a 2011 article in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology:

“The of the human intestine is diverse and abundant. It is estimated there are as many as 1000 different bacterial species and > 7000 different strains living in the tract.”3

Generally speaking, the bacteria that live in the gut are not harmful. In fact, research has shown that disruption of the normal balance of these bacteria is associated with a variety of conditions, such as obesity, inflammatory bowel diseases, and cancer. Some of the benefits of gut bacteria include:

  • Contributing to healthy immune function.
  • Providing protection against viruses and harmful bacteria that enter the gut.
  • Contributing to healthy digestion by extracting energy and nutrients from food.

The variety of species and strains of bacteria living in the gut changes throughout life according to age, diet, and certain medications, including antibiotics. Therefore, it is impossible to determine exactly what constitutes a normal gut microbiome.3,4 As the same 2011 article in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology explains:

Children And Infant Studies

This first up, a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, and perfect example of why you shouldnt expect improvement taking whatever probiotic species willy-nilly.

The study found that infants taking L. rhamnosus had a reduced risk of developing eczema compared to the placebo control after two years. However, the same was not found with using Bifidobacterium animalis. In fact, B. animalis had no effect on eczema at all.

Cooler yet, some of the same researchers in the above study decided to do a followup a couple years later. By then those 2 year old babies were now 4 year old children, and had completely stopped using probiotic for a full 2 years.

They found that the children who supplemented with L. rhamnosus in the first two years of their life, had a significantly lower chance of developing eczema than the control or those that used B. animalis instead. Other studies have had similar findings.

And one of the last children studies followed 14 different cases of patients between the ages of 8 to 64 month old, who had resistant eczema that wasnt responding to standard therapy. Almost every single participant had little to no symptoms after 6 months of supplementing with L. rhamnosus lysate. The photos speak for themselves.
