Understanding Probiotics And Prebiotics

Both probiotics and prebiotics are considered big deals in nutrition these days. They both support the body in building and maintaining a healthy colony of bacteria which aid digestion. It is in fact, becoming more understood that the majority of our well-being and health begins in the gut. A healthy gut is believed to boost energy, metabolism, immunity, and overall health.

A plethora of diseases and conditions are believed to be linked to the microbes inside us from autism to obesity and from how well we sleep to how we respond to certain medications. So if microbes are key to our well-being its important to unpick how they influence human health.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria and yeasts. They are often described as good or friendly bacteria. They are believed to help restore the natural balance of bacteria in your gut resulting in better digestive health. Probiotic foods include yogurt, kefir, fermented foods such as sauerkraut, and certain cheeses like gouda.

Prebiotics are generally types of high-fiber foods that the body cannot digest such as fruit, veg, and whole grains. Some products have prebiotics added, they will often say fortified with. Prebiotics serves as food for probiotics, they play a role in stimulating the growth and activity of certain bacteria that are good for our health and help keep the cells that line the gut healthy.

Probiotic Tea: Is This For Real

Josh writes:

This Thanksgiving, my grandmother had a lemon ginger tea from Bigelow, which had probiotics in it. I was surprised to see a dry tea that did not need refrigeration but still claimed to have probiotic properties. The tea was delicious. Even if the probiotic element might be questionable, would it be harmful to consume the tea anyway?

A. Probiotics are hot these days and adding some to your product is a sure way to increase sales. But does tea made from these tea bags contain any beneficial bacteria?

Actually, it does! Bigelow has selected a special strain of probiotic known as Bacillus coagulans. This particular strain is highly tolerant to heat as well as extremes in pH balance. As a result, it can survive both boiling water and stomach acid!

OK, so the bugs actually make it to your gut. But do they do anything for you once they get there? Possibly, yes.

Consuming bacillus coagulans on a daily basis may have positive effects on digestive function, including reduced gas and bloating after meals. The probiotics might also have modest anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulating propertiesalthough these have not been linked to any specific health outcomes such as a reduced risk of colds.

The tea is certainly safe to consume and the probiotics might add some modest benefits above and beyond the herbs. Enjoy it in good health!

Analyses Of Tea Infusion

Green tea infusion was analyzed for the total level of polyphenolic compounds using the Folin-Ciocalteu method by the procedure described by Rusak et al. . Results expressed as milligrams of gallic acid equivalents per liter of infusion were recalculated per 100 g of the respective milk. Additionally, the content of flavan-3-ols, i.e., -epicatechin , -epigallocatechin , -epigallocatechin gallate , and -epicatechin gallate , was determined by means of high-performance liquid chromatography . The catechins were identified using L-7000 LaChrom liquid chromatograph with UV/Vis detector equipped with a reversed phase column . The sample preparation and exact analysis followed the procedure described by Socha et al. . The determination of ferric-reducing antioxidant power and scavenging rate of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical followed the procedures described in the previous work of Najgebauer-Lejko et al. . The FRAP was expressed as millimoles Fe2+ equivalents per liter, and the DPPH antiradical activity as antiradical power calculated relative to the ARP of Trolox in millimoles of Trolox equivalents per kilogram sample.

Does Probiotic Tea Actually Work

Review of The New Shea Moisture Matcha Green Tea & Probiotics Collection

Probiotic tea bags with added probiotic strains dont offer any special advantage over taking normal probiotic supplements, but may be equally effective.

As with any dietary supplement, though, its best to understand exactly what youre ingesting and any potential drawbacks or side effects.

Some manufactured probiotic teas available today use a probiotic strain with the trade name GanedenBC 30, which is also known as Bacillus coagulans GBI-30. This strain of Bacillus coagulans is formulated to survive boiling water and stomach acid to reach your large intestine.

Bacillus coagulans is whats called a spore-forming bacterium. Most scientists believe that its not a natural part of the human gut microbiome, and it typically comes from soil.

Some health experts have raised concerns over the use of spore-forming probiotics because they can colonize your gut and could be dangerous for people whose immune systems become compromised.

And if spore-forming bacteria become opportunistic and start causing harm in your GI tract, its difficult or impossible to eliminate them using antibiotics.

While spore-forming organisms from soil might appear to be a good idea at first glance, other types of probiotics that have a lower risk profile are probably the wiser choice for your gut health.

Role Of Probiotic Mixture With And Without Green Tea Extract In Prevention Of Hepatorenal Syndrome In Rat Model

Hepatorenal syndrome is a state of advanced liver disease associated with acute renal failure. The pathophysiolgy of such syndrome is still not well understood. Severe liver failure might induce inhibition of renal blood flow pointing to renal vasoconstriction which could lead to renal dysfunction however the reduction in the filtration rate of the glomeruli is not always proportion as to renal blood flow referring to involvement of other events in the pathogenesis of HRS. Elevated nitric oxide synthase during such syndrome as well as elevated malondialdehyde denote the involvement of high oxidative stress and inflammation in HRS,. Changes in colonic microflora were recently linked to chronic diseases including liver, kidney and inflammatory diseases-, so imbalance of gut microbiota could have a hand in development of HRS. As the exact mechanism of HRS is still ignored, therapy of such syndrome has not yet been fully established. Nutraceuticals and probiotic could have a role to overcome, manage or protect from HRS.

The Petri dishes for lactobacilli enumeration in bioyogurts and acidophilus milks were incubated respectively under aerobic conditions or in 2.5-L anaerobic jars using Anaerocult® C sachets . The count of bifidobacteria was evaluated using nalidixic acid, neomycin sulfate, lithium chloride, and paromomycin sulfate -MRS agar in anaerobic incubators of our own construction filled with CO2. All cultures were incubated at 37 °C for 2 or 3 days.

But its not really an eww! Some of the most delicious things we eat are chock full of probiotics. Here are a few examples:

  • Kimchi is made through fermentation. For the most part fermentation is one of the most common ways to develop some great funky little gut friends
  • Yogurt is one of the best and most widely accessible probiotics
  • Miso is great in soup and is filled with friendly bacteria
  • Pickles are another yummy fermented probiotic
  • Even some cheeses are probiotics! Cheeses like gouda and mozzarella have a bunch of good bacteria that survive the aging process.

Probiotic Tea Versus Fiber Rich Fermented Foods

Matcha Green Tea and Probiotics SheaMoisture | In-depth REVIEW & DEMO | Combination Skin

Occasionally, it has been argued that probiotic tea may not be the answer you are looking for after all. A study has shown that a diet rich in probiotics can actually lower the diversity of bacteria present, since many products in the market have a narrow variety of bacterial strains.

on the other hand, those studies have shown that consuming a diet of high fiber fermented foods could actually do better.

At this point, the call is yours to make. Try everything and settle for that which is best serves your interests.

Also, while individual reactions to FODMAP foods are set by a number of unique details, imbalances set forth directly by lifestyle and diet may aggravate symptoms.

With that in mind, here are a few helpful strategies to keep in mind:

  • Preparing foods with spices reported with antimicrobial properties which may support healthy bacterial balance.
  • Naturally, identify sensitivities to FODMAP foods, and adjust.
  • Matcha Green Tea 2 or 3 times per day. The abundance of potent antioxidants unique to matcha are widely established probiotics.
