Can You Take Saccharomyces Boulardii With Other Probiotics

Does Saccharomyces Boulardii Work

Mode of action of Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745

For adults who are prone to C. Diff. infection , it seems to work, as Larry David would say, pretty pretty good.

A couple of studies show that taking S. boulardii lessens the chance of getting CDI again by up to 33.3%.

As for diarrhea, does this friendly yeast work for curing it? A study of 100 hospitalized children suggests it does. The kids took it for 5 days. The probiotic significantly reduced the duration of the digestive disturbance.

Not only that, the friendly yeast also lowered the number of bowel movements.

Thats not the only study that shows its effective. Seven other studies, involving over 900 kids showed taking S. boulardii reduces the duration of diarrhea by approximately 1 day.

As for H. pylori infection, S. boulardii may not completely get rid of it. But research says its effective for reducing the side effects produced by the standard medication therapy.

And when it comes to IBS, research says that the yeast probiotic improves symptoms.

What Should I Take With Saccharomyces Boulardii

Asked By : Rana Lowell

Taking Saccharomyces boulardii by mouth along with the antibiotics vancomycin or metronidazole prevents the recurrence of diarrhea caused by the bacteria Clostridium difficile. However, it might not help treat first episodes of diarrhea caused by this type of bacteria. Helicobacter pylori.

What Is Saccharomyces Boulardii And Its Importance

Saccharomyces boulardii is a microorganism that is quite different from the normal and well known species of probiotics. It is a natural yeast that is originally obtained from lychee fruit. It is a transient microorganism and this means it goes through the gut without binding to the wall of the gut.

In order to reap the full benefits, you are supposed to take four daily doses of 250-500 milligrams and 1 gram per day. In as much as it does not cause much side effects, it is wise that you consult your medical personnel, especially when you are allergic to yeast, breastfeeding or pregnant.

It comes as an over the counter medication and you can take it orally. It is found in other foods apart from yoghurt. They include kefir, kombucha, kimchi and also miso.

Saccharomyces boulardii is a nonpathogenic yeast, reportedly able to protect the intestine against Clostridium difficile and cholera toxins, clinically effective in preventing antibiotic-induced diarrhea, diarrhea associated with tube-feeding in critically ill patients, and recurrence of Clostridium difficile infection

It has shown usefulness in antibiotic-associated diarrhea. There were controlled studies done and out of the 10 studies, 8 showed significant efficacy for the prevention of antibiotic related diarrhea. Antibiotics prescribed for a bacterial infection in a different part of the body can disrupt the good bacteria in your gut, flushing them out of your system along with the bad ones.

Does Saccharomyces Boulardii Cure Candida

Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that Saccharomyces boulardii is effective for Candida infections. One 2019 study shows that S. boulardii may help prevent non-albicans Candida yeasts from sticking to surfaces, but it doesnt work if the surface is already colonised.

Even though many online articles suggest that Saccharomyces boulardii can make Candida die off, the evidence is very weak. Some studies looking at Saccharomyces boulardii and Candida are 30-40 years old, and the others were conducted in mice and on incubation plates.

Plus, these claims are directly contradicted by a 2011 study where researchers showed that S. boulardii supplements did not prevent Candida albicans infections in mice. Saccharomyces boulardii doesn’t treat yeast infections either.

The bottom line Dont believe the Saccharomyces boulardii for Candida hype. If you are concerned about a candida overgrowth, consult a doctor who can order proper tests.

Effect Of Metabolic Products Of Probiotics And The Microbiota On Epithelial Barrier Function

Saccharomyces Boulardii

Probiotic-derived metabolic products have been shown to enhance barrier function in a number of cases. Culture supernatants of Saccharomyces boulardii, but not Saccharomyces cerevisiae, were shown to significantly improve the capacity of epithelial cells for wound healing and migration in vitro and in vivo via the activation of 21-integrin collagen receptors .

Probiotic-derived polyphosphate is capable of protecting mice against DSS-induced colitis, acting on the integrinp38 mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway and suppressing oxidant-induced intestinal permeability by preventing F-actin and E-cadherin degradation . In another study, the authors identified the p40 molecule, produced and secreted by LGG, as the main mediator for ameliorating DSS and oxazolone-induced inflammation, through its binding to the epidermal growth factor receptor . Activation of the EGFR by p40 was sufficient to reduce cytokine-induced IEC apoptosis in vitro and ex vivo. Further, the authors succeeded in administering the p40 molecule specifically in the colon, where once again they observed a subsequent activation of the EGFR. Strikingly, in that study administration of p40 was able to both prevent and cure DSS-induced colitis , an effect that has never been observed before for live probiotic strains, as most might exert strain-specific preventive actions but are of little help once inflammation is manifested .

S Boulardii May Help Prevent Travelers Diarrhea

In addition to its important role in preventing incidents of CDD, S. boulardii has been proven to help prevent the occurrence of travelers diarrhea.

This is a big one for me when Ive traveled to Asia. You want to jump right in and enjoy everything the locals do Anthony Bourdain style, but you also fear spending a large chunk of the trip in the bathroom.

This meta-analysis of studies found that probiotics, and especially S. boulardii, significantly prevent travelers diarrhea.

Saccharomyces Boulardii And Your Genes

Above Ive discussed a wide range of health improvements linked with S. boulardii. Yet an important question remains about the potential genetic contributions to the various disorders mentioned above.

Understanding digestive health and its interaction with allergies is a highly complex area, and so it can be difficult to identify genes which might play a role. However, in the more serious disorders such as Crohns disease, there are a few genes of interest that keep appearing.

How To Supplement With S Boulardii

S. boulardii is very well tolerated as an oral supplement, and any digestive side effects are extremely rare. Its important to note that not all probiotics are created equal, however. Many common brands that you can find in a health food store or pharmacy, have low concentrations of probiotic bacteria.

Such concentrations are not enough to rebalance the gut in autoimmune disease. Other versions need to be kept in the fridge. I dont know about you, but I often FORGET to take the supplements that I keep in my fridge! This is why I wanted to include a heat-stable version of S. boulardii in my Rootcology supplement line.

This strain does not require refrigeration and has the ability to survive passage through the harsh gastric environment, withstanding high acidity, bile, and heat.

Plus, with Rootcologys 30-day, 100% satisfaction guarantee, you have nothing to lose but your symptoms! if you are unsatisfied for any reason, you may return the product within 30 days for a full refund, minus shipping/handling fees.

I always recommend starting at a low dose of 1-2 capsules per day. The old pharmacists adage is start low and go slow!. If you experience die-off symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue, gastrointestinal distress, muscle soreness, or flu-like symptoms, you may want to reduce your dose to ½ capsule daily, or even ½ capsule every other day.

I recommend increasing your dosage by 1 capsule, every 3-7 days.

  • H. pylori: 100-1000 mg daily, for a period of 1-4 weeks
  • L Acidophilus May Reduce Symptoms Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The impact of Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 in gastrointestinal immune responses

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a chronic disorder affecting the colon caused by infection, inflammation, or changes to gut bacteria. This most often leads to diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, gas, and bloating. More severe signs can include iron deficiency anemia and unexplained vomiting.13

Research suggests that Lactobacilli strains like L. acidophilus may offer significant help in reducing symptoms of IBS. In one study, 77 subjects diagnosed with IBS were given either Bifidobacterium infantis or Lactobacillus salivarius, each in doses of 10 billion CFUs, in a malted milk drink or the malted milk drink alone without any active bacteria. This was given every day over a course of eight weeks, and the symptoms of IBS were recorded every day and assessed every week. Researchers recorded stool microbiologic studies, quality of life assessments, and blood samples at the beginning and end of the study. Results of the study found that L. salivarius resulted in a greater reduction in bowel movement frequency and consistency, while B. infantis offered a greater reduction in other symptom scores.14

Ideally, you want a diverse range of probiotic strains to cover all your bases and maximize the potential health benefits. DrFormulas® Nexabiotic contains both L. acidophilus and S. boulardii, along with a variety of other probiotic strains for additional benefits that can replenish your gut flora and promote your overall health.

    Modulation Of The Normal Microbiome

Modulation of the normal microbiome may be favored directly by transiting probiotics which produce antimicrobial substances, or indirectly contribute to immune modulation or gut barrier function . The use of probiotics has typically been applied to reestablish the normal gut microbiome upon dysbiosis. Gut dysbiosis refers to changes in the microbiomes quantitative and qualitative composition. These changes may contribute to a disease state frequently associated to inflammation and can be a result of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, acute infectious diarrhea or IBD . Probiotics treatment helps to stabilize the gut microbial community and lead to an improved disease outcome . While some probiotics may become a part of the microbiome, others simply pass through the GI tract and modulate or influence the existing microbiome before exiting the body .

Several factors can have deleterious effects on the gut microbiome and hinder its protective role to the host epithelial lining, such as antibiotic use or surgery . This may result in host susceptibility to colonization by pathogens until the normal microbiome is reestablished, which can take several weeks . S. boulardii helps to restore the normal microflora in this type of patient and the use of probiotics as modulators of the normal microbiome through colonization during the susceptibility period may work as a surrogate until the normal microbiome is reestablished .

What Are The Benefits Of Saccharomyces Boulardii

    The Gut Health Gift Guide

For example, when taking antibiotics, digestive complications such as loose, watery stool can occur as the antibodies work to rid the body of bad bacteria. Unfortunately, this takes the good bacteria along with it. S. Boulardii has been shown to aid the bodys ability to control its normal eliminations.

Similarly, uncomfortable and irregular bowel complications can occur when traveling, especially to foreign countries. When consumption of strange or unusual foods or drinks that your body is not used to occurs during travel, S. boulardii administration has shown positive results.

    S. boulardii supports the protection of the intestinal lining from harmful bacteria. It promotes a healthy immune system and the continued function of the gastrointestinal barrier, as well as aids digestive enzymes for nutrient absorption and digestion.

S Boulardii Treats Antibiotic Associated Diarrhea

As the name suggests, antibiotic associated diarrhea is the problem of diarrhea as a side effect of taking antibiotics. AAD symptoms can range from mild to more severe and can even result in death. 6 The problem is especially prevalent in hospital patients, but varies by the type of antibiotic.

AAD can be divided between late and early onset, with the timing of symptoms varying by the type of antibiotic. Early onset of AAD was associated with clindamycin, amoxicillin and ampicillin, while delayed-onset AAD was associated with erythromycin, ciprofloxacin and clarithromycin.

How Long Does It Take To Work & How Long Does It Last

Duration of supplementation has been studied for as little as 3 days or up to 6 months depending on the disease state being treated.

    S. boulardii, when given by mouth, achieves a steady-state concentration in the gut within three days and is cleared within 3-5 days after it is discontinued.1

Total SCFA concentrations remain elevated 9-10 days after S. boulardii discontinuation which suggests a prolonged action of the yeast, and indicates that daily treatment may not be necessary to sustain its effects on SCFA concentrations.14

However, it is important to note that S. boulardii does not colonize the human gut, meaning that while daily supplementation may not be necessary to reap benefits, continued supplementation is still necessary to continue experiencing benefits of this probiotic yeast.44

S Boulardii Safety And Clinical Efficacy

Clinical trials have investigated the efficacy of S. boulardii in the improvement of several GI conditions outcome. This yeast was seen to improve the outcome of several diarrhea diseases, including pediatric diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, acute diarrhea, travelers diarrhea caused by bacterial, viral or parasites, and enteral nutrition-related diarrhea . S. boulardii also improves the outcome in patients suffering from H. pylori or C. difficile infections by helping bacteria eradication, preventing relapses, reducing adverse reactions, and reducing treatment-associated diarrhea . IBD is a prevalent GI tract disorder associated with inflammatory diarrheal diseases such as ulcerative colitis, pouchitis and Crohns disease . Clinical trial data points to a possible role of S. boulardii in reducing treatment relapses , which are frequent in these conditions, although further studies are required to reach compelling conclusions. Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms also improve with S. boulardii administration. It is a condition frequently characterized by abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, and disturbed intestinal transit. These symptoms were shown to be alleviated in 50% of patients upon S. boulardii use .

Being healthy takes guts. The gastrointestinal makeup of our bodies is a major factor in our overall health. So, how much do you know about what goes on in your gut?

Increasing evidence shows that the gastrointestinal microflora is a major regulator of the immune system, not only in the gut but also in other organs. The metabolic activity of this flora is monitored by probiotics. Most of us refer to probiotics as the friendly bacteria.

But theres one special probiotic you should know more about – Saccharomyces Boulardii.
