What Is A Good Probiotic To Take While On Antibiotics

What To Know About Prebiotics

Taking Probiotics with Antibiotics or Anti-microbial Herbs

What are alternatives to both probiotic and fecal transplants to get the gut back to health? Meyer, of the IFIC Foundation, wrote that if you are planning on taking probiotics, you should make sure to incorporate prebiotics in your regimen.

Prebiotics are defined as a substrate that is selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit, which means these foods cant be broken down by the human digestive system, she added. Simply stated, prebiotics are food for probiotics. Fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, cereals are all prebiotics. Specifically, artichokes, asparagus, bananas, berries, chicory, garlic, green vegetables, legumes, onions, tomatoes, as well as grains like barley, oat, and wheat prebiotics. In addition, other fibers like inulin are also prebiotics that are added to foods like granola bars, cereal, and yogurt.

She said the jury is out on what the ideal amount is for daily prebiotic or probiotic intake.

Id recommend incorporating prebiotics and probiotics predominately from food. Think yogurt topped with fruit and an oat-based cereal or an Asian-inspired veggie stir-fry with kimchi, she wrote.

Mayer said that even though there is no scientific evidence for support, consuming a variety of naturally fermented food products could be helpful for your gut.

Again, without scientific evidence, I would suggest not to increase fiber intake drastically, as it may result in gas and bloating type symptoms, he added.

Which Are The Best Probiotics To Take Alongside Antibiotics

A question we often get asked is, which are the best probiotics with antibiotics, in terms of the associated diarrhoea? As seen above, it seems that this is the main area of concern when taking this type of medication.

Its important to select strains of probiotics that have been tested in clinical trials and have been shown to reach the gut alive when taken alongside antibiotics. The more friendly bacteria present in the gut, the lower the chance of developing digestive issues like diarrhoea. Three strains of probiotics in particular, Lactobacillus acidophilus Rosell-52, Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell-11 and Bifidobacterium lactis Lafti B94 have been shown to do this. They can safely be taken at exactly the same time as antibiotic medication. The recommended use for a supplement containing this probiotic combination is as follows:

  • Take one capsule daily with breakfast, even with your antibiotic medication.
  • Take daily until the antibiotic course is finished, and preferably for one week after.
  • Continue until the pack is completed and add a second pack if the antibiotic treatment lasts more than one week.

In clinical trials involving those undergoing antibiotic treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection, participants were given Lactobacillus acidophilus Rosell-52, Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell-11 and Bifidobacterium lactis Lafti B94 alongside antibiotics all three strains were proven to survive alongside the medication11,12.

Taking Probiotics With Antibiotics

Many people experience nausea, diarrhoea, tummy upsets, bloating, and even vomiting when taking antibiotics. Some doctors recommend taking a probiotic supplement at the same time to help with these digestive side effects.

Even after taking antibiotics, you can boost your own beneficial bacteria with probiotic foods and supplements. They contain microbes that maintain your gut environment and help regulate your microbiome, keeping opportunistic pathogens at bay and beneficial ones thriving.

Why You Should Take Probiotics With Antibiotics

Should You Take Probiotics if You Must Take Antibiotics ...

Antibiotics play a critical role in killing bad bacteria. But as they destroy infections, they can also cause collateral damage to the good bacteria in your gut, which could result in diarrhea for a couple of daysor even weeksafter you stop taking the medicine.

So how can you get the benefits of antibiotics without the nasty stomach side effects? The answer might be found in probioticspills or even powders with live microorganisms that offer health benefits.

Your intestines contain around 1,000 different species of bacteria, with 100 trillion bacteria in total, says Dr. Lawrence Hoberman, president and chief executive of Medical Care Innovations Inc. If 80% of that bacteria is the good, healthy kind, the harmful bacteria stay at bay. But antibiotics change the balance in the microbiome, which may result in an increase in the harmful bacteria, he explained.

The immune system recognizes the bad guys and will try to destroy them. But in the process, it breaks down the intestinal lining and causes inflammation, and thats how we get antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Dr. Hoberman explains.

One study found that antibiotic-associated diarrhea affects between 5% and 39% of patients, depending on which antibiotic they take. But research shows that probiotics can curb digestion problems. A meta-analysis of 34 other studies found that probiotics reduce instances of antibiotic-associated diarrhea by 52%.

Potential Benefits Of Probiotics

Arjun Avila, a product development consultant specialized in vitamins and probiotic supplements, says probiotics are essentially very tiny living microorganisms and there are thousands of probiotic strains that offer different health benefits.

Probiotic strains are diverse, Avila says. If you think of dog breeds, it can range from chihuahua to pit bulls, and probiotic strains are very much like that as well.

Researchers are still studying these various probiotic strains to understand exactly how they work. But some studies have shown that probiotics may help improve heart health and support digestive systems, especially when the levels of healthy gut bacteria are off balance.

Probiotics are able to help you balance your gut so that you dont have as many unwanted side effects from the use of antibiotics, Avila says.

Probiotics can be found in yogurt, as well as a wide range of fermented foods like kimchi, miso, kombucha, and kefir. Its generally best to obtain probiotics from food sources since they also offer other nutrients. But probiotic supplements are convenient and easy to travel with, Merenstein adds, and they can last longer than many probiotic foods that need to be refrigerated.

Merenstein also stresses the importance of taking the probiotics as early as possible, before any antibiotic symptoms emerge. In the study, participants started the probiotics regimen the same day they started taking the antibiotics.

What Kind Of Yogurt Do You Eat When On Antibiotics

The probiotics, or live microorganisms in fermented foods such as yogurt, are also found in our very own gut.

These are good types of bacteria that are essential to regulating the immune system and keep us healthy. However, medicating with antibiotics can disrupt the population of good bacteria in the gut and cause other side effects such as diarrhea, yeast infections, nausea, or vomiting.

Yogurt is an effective remedy for that, but all yogurt is not made equally. Heres what you should look out for:

How Do Probiotics Restore Gut Flora

Probiotics contain the same beneficial organism as those in your gut.

After an antibiotic course, the gut flora takes time before it can resume normalcy.

This may put your health at risk, and instead of waiting for the gut to slowly restore itself, boosting it with a good probiotic comes a long way.

And even though probiotics may not restore the gut flora immediately, taking them will help prevent harmful bacteria from taking over during the course of antibiotics.

And if your timing is right, the good bacteria will begin to do their job until the next dose of antibiotics wipes them.

Taking a prebiotic 2 hours before or after probiotics will help you reap as many benefits as you can.

Why I Take Antibiotics With Probiotics

Should you take probiotics while on antibiotics?

Antibiotics kill our probiotic bacteria. So knowing the benefits of probiotics, I avoid antibiotics whenever possible.

But, you should probably take antibiotics to avoid death or kill serious infections. And if you take probiotics together with antibiotics, youll reduce the damage that antibiotics do to our native probiotics.

Side Effects Of Probiotics

The common side effect of probiotics is increased digestive discomfort, such as bloating or gas. This is typically short-lived and resolves in a few days of regularly consuming probiotic supplements or probiotic foods.

More serious side effects are possible, but extremely rare. The bacteria or yeast that is consumed as a probiotic supplement can enter the bloodstream and cause infection. Those who are at increased risk of infection include immunocompromised patients, premature infants, those with short bowel syndrome, anyone with central venous catheters, and patients with cardiac valve disease.

It is, of course, important to discuss any supplementation with your healthcare provider.

The Medical Bottom Line

Antibiotics are wonderful medicines. But this study of probiotics and many other studies show they also have a dark side. The best way to avoid antibiotic-associated diarrhea is to limit your use of antibiotics. For example, you likely dont need an antibiotic for an uncomplicated ear or sinus infection or bronchitis. Most often the culprits are viruses, which dont respond to antibiotics anyway.

The best way to keep your normal flora in balance is to only take antibiotics when necessary.

Probiotics have been touted as a treatment for a huge range of conditions, from obesity to mental health problems. One of their popular uses is to replenish the gut microbiome after a course of antibiotics. The logic is antibiotics wipe out your gut bacteria along with the harmful bacteria that might be causing your infection, so a probiotic can help to restore order to your intestines.

But while it might sound like sense, there is scant solid evidence suggesting probiotics actually work if taken this way. Researchers have found that taking probiotics after antibiotics in fact delays gut health recovery.

Side Effects And Interactions

Probiotics and Antibiotics

Probiotics usually dont cause major side effects in healthy individuals.

However, you may experience minor symptoms, such as gas and bloating. These often improve with time, but taking your probiotic at night may reduce daytime symptoms.

If you take a probiotic to prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea, you may wonder whether the antibiotic will kill the bacteria in your probiotic. However, strains designed to help prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea wont be affected (

How Often Should I Take Probiotics

The tricky thing about probiotics is that they dont stay in your gut for very long. You poop them out, so in order for them to be effective, you need to take them daily until you feel better, says Tamara Freuman, RD, author of The Bloated Belly Whisperer. Any benefits from a probiotic only happen as it passes through your body, she says. Because of that, taking your probiotics at a certain time can actually make them more effective.

Antibiotics are a common way to fight infections, but many dont realize there are certain foods to eat while taking antibiotics.

Antibiotic therapy is the first line of treatment for the majority of bacterial infections. Unfortunately, these drugs arent without side effects.

Rarely, they can cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms like

  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain

Although these side effects are usually mild, transient, and harmless, they can become severe and signal the need for a change in medication.

Sometimes, patients find they can control these side effects, or even eliminate them completely, with just a few basic diet changes.

In other cases, its the food causing the problem and removing it from their diet is enough.

In this post, well tell you about six of the best foods to eat while taking antibiotics and the four you should always avoid, too.

Health Issues Caused By Canine Antibiotics

Best Probiotics To Take With Antibiotics

1. Secondary infections can emerge in dogs taking antibiotics due to antibiotics indiscriminately killing off beneficial bacteria in addition to the bad bacteria. Yeast infections are a common side effect of antibiotics because the drug switches the normal balance of 20 percent bad bacteria and 80 percent good bacteria to nearly all bad bacteria.

2. Irritable bowel syndrome, an inflammatory disorder characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration and abdominal pain. Untreated IBS can also lead to shock and coma due to severe dehydration as organs start failing and systems start shutting down.

3. Since antibiotics can lower immune system functioning by disrupting bacteria levels in the intestines dogs are susceptible to having high white blood cell counts and recurring fevers that indicate an infection exists somewhere in the body.

4. Kidney or liver disease have been known to affect dogs on a regimen of antibiotics, especially if they are taking a combination of antibiotics and Immunosuppressant drugs. Both suppress immune system functioning and can leave the dog vulnerable to organ failure and systemic infections.

5. Blood in the urine of dogs taking antibiotics is not unusual as the imbalance of good/bad bacteria worsens, allowing health problems like kidney stones, UTIs and allergic reactions to antibiotics to produce bloody urine.

Antibiotics can cause recurring fevers because they lower the defense of the immune system.

Are All Probiotics The Same

Delivery mechanisms, diversity, and dosage may differ with different types of probiotics, and the same is with benefits and side effects. Thats why you shouldnt conclude that your body doesnt like probiotic supplements simply because a certain strain or brand failed.

Studies show different survival rates for different probiotic strains, whether taken 30 minutes before food, with food, or after food. You just need to approach your probiotic intake according to the specific strain in your probiotic follow your manufacturers recommendations.

Probiotics are generally safe, but side effects such as bloating, constipation, allergies, and headaches may occur. In case of side effects, reduce your dosage to half and increase gradually as your body adjusts. If symptoms occur for more than two weeks, discontinue your current brand.

Do Antibiotics Kill Probiotics

Unfortunately, only a few probiotic strains have been shown to survive when taken directly alongside antibiotics. As all antibiotic medication will have some kind of negative impact on the gut microbiome, its really important to choose the right strains of probiotics when taking this type of medication. You want strains that have not only been researched to survive when directly taken alongside antibiotics, but to also demonstrate that they exert benefits.

The extensive research behind the three previously mentioned Lactobacillus strains sets them apart from many probiotic supplements on the market today and makes them a suitable choice for anyone who wishes to take natural bacteria during their course of antibiotics. Furthermore, Lactobacillus acidophilus Rosell-52, Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell-11 and Bifidobacterium lactis Lafti B94 have been tested and shown in-vitro to survive stomach acidity and bile salts.
