Do Probiotics Help With Belly Bloat

Avoid Rapid Weight Gain

Do Prebiotics Help with Stomach Bloating and Distention?

Rapid weight gain is linked to bloating for several reasons.

First, a buildup of fat in your stomach area may constrain your bowels, increasing tension and contributing to bloating. Additionally, fat may have inflammatory effects, contributing to hypersensitivity in your gut .

Finally, unwanted weight gain may cause you to focus attention on your stomach area, which may increase your perception of bloating .

If you have overweight or obesity and are experiencing bloating, trying some healthy strategies for weight loss such as exercise and limiting portion sizes may be beneficial.

Summary

Rapid weight gain may contribute to bloating by increasing bowel tension, inflammation, and mental focus on your stomach area. Conversely, weight loss may help reduce these effects.

Beware Of Excessive Use Of Probiotics

For many years, we have heard that taking particular amounts of certain microorganisms known as probiotics can benefit human health due to their effect on the gut.

It is now common practice to take probiotics to alleviate gastrointestinal conditions and diseases, and clinicians treating them are also increasingly recommending them.

The most commonly used probiotics are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species.

In the United States, probiotics are classed as dietary supplements and their production is not subject to the same Food and Drug Administration regulations as those required of drugs.

There are many commercial probiotics available over the counter. They come in different forms, such as freeze-dried pills, sachets that can be mixed with drinks, and yogurts.

While some probiotic manufacturers have tested some of their products in clinical trials, there has been little or no research on whether taking different probiotics together causes the bacteria to work with or against each other.

There are certain scenarios in which probiotic use causes problems, including conditions that affect the movement of food along the gastrointestinal tract. People who take opioids and drugs to reduce stomach acid also experience problems.

Dr. Rao and his colleagues recognize that probiotics can benefit some people in certain situations, such as helping replenish gut bacteria after taking antibiotics. However, they warn against excessive and indiscriminate use.

Some Bacteria Trigger Weight Gain

Changes in gut bacteria may play a role in weight gain. For example, people with obesity tend to have fewer or less diverse gut bacteria than lean people .

Some animal studies also show that when gut bacteria from mice with obesity were transplanted into the guts of lean mice, the lean mice developed obesity.

How does this happen? It might be due to how your gut bacteria interact with the cells involved in the digestive process. One study even found that overeating can trigger an increase in obesity-causing bacteria.

Can You Take Prebiotics Without Experiencing Bloating

Here is where science differs from anecdotal evidence. I was inspired to write this article because Ive written and spoken publicly about prebiotics for a good few years now, and Im an avid fan of the idea of consuming them, but for the life of me I cannot digest them. Ever. No matter what. Science says when you first start taking prebiotics, you can expect an increase in gas and bloating, but after a couple weeks it will reduce to the levels experienced before. Specifically, The volume of intestinal gas produced…increased by 37% at the beginning of HOST-G904 administration…and decreased down to preadministration level after 2 week administration.

Prebiotic supplement brands may claim that their particular product doesnt cause gas or bloating, and that if you experience those effects, you arent taking the right prebiotic. That logic is perfectly sound, with one brand stating, People supplementing with digestion resistant starch sometimes complain of bloating and discomfort, especially when first trying the product or when increasing the dose. This is often the case with other prebiotics. However, this problem is generally temporary and is likely related to the microbiome adapting to increased prebiotic levels: The bacteria that can use the prebiotic more efficiently increase in numbers over time as the amount of prebiotic in the diet increases.

Saggioro performed a study with 70 IBS patients, randomizing them to 3 different treatment groups for assessing improvements in abdominal pain and severity scores of 7 IBS symptoms. These treatment arms included Group 1 Group 2 or placebo. Both treatment cohorts showed significant decreases in abdominal pain and severity scores at 2 and 4 weeks however, the major limitation of this study was the inability to perform statistical evaluation due to its small number of patients and its short duration of follow-up.

A larger study by Whorwell and coworkers evaluating different doses of B. infantis 35624 was performed in 362 women diagnosed with IBS. The study participants were randomized to low or high doses of B. infantis or placebo and were followed for a total of 4 weeks. In the treatment group, there was a significant decrease in abdominal pain/discomfort at 4 weeks, along with improvement in the secondary endpoints of bloating/distension, sensation of incomplete evacuation, passage of gas, straining, bowel habit satisfaction, and a reduction in composite symptom score. These benefits were only noted in the high-dosing group containing 1 Ã 10 CFU/mL of B. infantis, and not 1 Ã 10 CFU/mL of B. infantis. The authors concluded that the discrepancy in the efficacy of the higher and lower concentrations may have been secondary to the methods that the different formulations use to release the active agent within the intestine.

Your gut microbiome the collection of bacteria and other microbes that live in your gut is unique to you.

A healthy, diverse microbiome, with a high proportion of good bugs, is crucial for your gut health.

There is some evidence that probiotic supplements may improve gut health and relieve symptoms of certain gut-related conditions.

However, the types of bacteria currently available in supplements are often chosen because they are easier to manufacture, not necessarily because they are the best for you. Under certain conditions, these products may also increase resistance to antibiotics and further damage a weakened immune system.

Therefore, some probiotic supplements may not be helpful and, in some cases, may even be harmful.

At ZOE, we believe that the best place to get your regular dose of probiotics is from foods that naturally contain them rather than from the supplements that are currently available on the market.
