Avoid Rapid Weight Gain
Rapid weight gain is linked to bloating for several reasons.
First, a buildup of fat in your stomach area may constrain your bowels, increasing tension and contributing to bloating. Additionally, fat may have inflammatory effects, contributing to hypersensitivity in your gut .
Finally, unwanted weight gain may cause you to focus attention on your stomach area, which may increase your perception of bloating .
If you have overweight or obesity and are experiencing bloating, trying some healthy strategies for weight loss such as exercise and limiting portion sizes may be beneficial.
Rapid weight gain may contribute to bloating by increasing bowel tension, inflammation, and mental focus on your stomach area. Conversely, weight loss may help reduce these effects.
Beware Of Excessive Use Of Probiotics
For many years, we have heard that taking particular amounts of certain microorganisms known as probiotics can benefit human health due to their effect on the gut.
It is now common practice to take probiotics to alleviate gastrointestinal conditions and diseases, and clinicians treating them are also increasingly recommending them.
The most commonly used probiotics are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species.
In the United States, probiotics are classed as dietary supplements and their production is not subject to the same Food and Drug Administration regulations as those required of drugs.
There are many commercial probiotics available over the counter. They come in different forms, such as freeze-dried pills, sachets that can be mixed with drinks, and yogurts.
While some probiotic manufacturers have tested some of their products in clinical trials, there has been little or no research on whether taking different probiotics together causes the bacteria to work with or against each other.
There are certain scenarios in which probiotic use causes problems, including conditions that affect the movement of food along the gastrointestinal tract. People who take opioids and drugs to reduce stomach acid also experience problems.
Dr. Rao and his colleagues recognize that probiotics can benefit some people in certain situations, such as helping replenish gut bacteria after taking antibiotics. However, they warn against excessive and indiscriminate use.

Some Bacteria Trigger Weight Gain
Changes in gut bacteria may play a role in weight gain. For example, people with obesity tend to have fewer or less diverse gut bacteria than lean people .
Some animal studies also show that when gut bacteria from mice with obesity were transplanted into the guts of lean mice, the lean mice developed obesity.
How does this happen? It might be due to how your gut bacteria interact with the cells involved in the digestive process. One study even found that overeating can trigger an increase in obesity-causing bacteria.
How Long Do I Have To Take Probiotics For Bloating
You should take probiotics every day for at least 3-5 months before you see full results.

Can You Take Prebiotics Without Experiencing Bloating
Here is where science differs from anecdotal evidence. I was inspired to write this article because Ive written and spoken publicly about prebiotics for a good few years now, and Im an avid fan of the idea of consuming them, but for the life of me I cannot digest them. Ever. No matter what. Science says when you first start taking prebiotics, you can expect an increase in gas and bloating, but after a couple weeks it will reduce to the levels experienced before. Specifically, The volume of intestinal gas produced…increased by 37% at the beginning of HOST-G904 administration…and decreased down to preadministration level after 2 week administration.
Prebiotic supplement brands may claim that their particular product doesnt cause gas or bloating, and that if you experience those effects, you arent taking the right prebiotic. That logic is perfectly sound, with one brand stating, People supplementing with digestion resistant starch sometimes complain of bloating and discomfort, especially when first trying the product or when increasing the dose. This is often the case with other prebiotics. However, this problem is generally temporary and is likely related to the microbiome adapting to increased prebiotic levels: The bacteria that can use the prebiotic more efficiently increase in numbers over time as the amount of prebiotic in the diet increases.
How Does Bloating Normally Present
Bloating comes with several symptoms, some of which are common, while others occur in rare cases. Below are symptoms of bloating:
Passing gas is the most common presenting feature of abdominal bloating. The individual frequently passes wind or gas involuntarily. This becomes quite embarrassing for the affected person, especially in social gatherings.
Abdominal bloating often have pain as the foremost presenting symptom. This pain can range from just a feeling of tightness, fullness, or pressure in the abdominal area to full-blown sharp pain. Therefore, the feeling has often been described as mildly uncomfortable to severely painful.
Burping or Belching
You get an urge to burp to get rid of the excess gas that has been accumulated in the abdomen, causing the bloating. Moreover, this is an uncomfortable and embarrassing situation for the affected individual.
One of the concerning symptoms of bloating includes blood in the stool. This is often associated with abdominal bloating due to Inflammatory Bowel Disease. A symptom like this should never be ignored and reported immediately to the doctor.
Abdominal distension occurs when gas accumulates in the abdomen. Since bloating results from gas accumulation, distension is one of its symptoms. This causes the size of the stomach to increase quite a large amount. It causes extreme discomfort to the patient.

Lactobacillus And Bifidobacterium Species
Saggioro performed a study with 70 IBS patients, randomizing them to 3 different treatment groups for assessing improvements in abdominal pain and severity scores of 7 IBS symptoms. These treatment arms included Group 1 Group 2 or placebo. Both treatment cohorts showed significant decreases in abdominal pain and severity scores at 2 and 4 weeks however, the major limitation of this study was the inability to perform statistical evaluation due to its small number of patients and its short duration of follow-up.
A larger study by Whorwell and coworkers evaluating different doses of B. infantis 35624 was performed in 362 women diagnosed with IBS. The study participants were randomized to low or high doses of B. infantis or placebo and were followed for a total of 4 weeks. In the treatment group, there was a significant decrease in abdominal pain/discomfort at 4 weeks, along with improvement in the secondary endpoints of bloating/distension, sensation of incomplete evacuation, passage of gas, straining, bowel habit satisfaction, and a reduction in composite symptom score. These benefits were only noted in the high-dosing group containing 1 Ã 10 CFU/mL of B. infantis, and not 1 Ã 10 CFU/mL of B. infantis. The authors concluded that the discrepancy in the efficacy of the higher and lower concentrations may have been secondary to the methods that the different formulations use to release the active agent within the intestine.

How Do Probiotics Relieve Bloating
From the time we are born, our bodies host trillions of microbes. These include bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Most of them live in our gut and benefit us in many ways. For instance, theyre important for digestion and immunity and even have an effect on our brains and behavior. They form whats known as our microbiota.
Probiotics are live microorganisms such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, which deliver health benefitsand are found in supplements or foods. Here, we will focus on how probiotics aid gut health and help with bloating. Probiotics like P3-OM produce substances like enzymes that break down food and others that fight unwelcome bacteria. In some cases, they influence other resident bacteria in the gut and improve the overall microbiome composition.
How these probiotics work to improve digestion and reduce bloating
- Improve and balance gut immunity
- Displace gas-producing bacteria, making it harder for them to stick to the gut wall
- Make the colon more acidic and thus less friendly to bad bacteria
- Strengthen the gut barrier
What Causes Bloating In The Stomach
Bloating is the result of a build up of gas in the digestive system and can lead to pain and that uncomfortable, heavy feeling after eating. Some people experience this occasionally, or for some this can be a daily occurrence.
The gut microbiome is made up of many different strains of bacteria, and is influenced daily by our individual environmental and lifestyle exposures. We play host to this army of bacteria, including beneficial probiotics, which are essential for our health and wellbeing. You may like to read: Are all types of friendly bacteria the same?

What Is Candida Overgrowth
Candida albicans is a species of yeast that lives naturally on your skin and in your gastrointestinal tract. Normally, Candida is kept in check by your friendly gut bacteria, but sometimes, it can multiply out of control.
The resulting infections can cause pain and inflammation throughout the body, both on the skin and in the gut or genitals. Candida overgrowth is most often noticed on the skin, mouth, and vaginal infections.
An intestinal Candida overgrowth can inflame and weaken the walls of the intestines, releasing toxic byproducts that may lead to many different health issues, from digestive disorders to depression.
Probiotics And Gut Health
Your gut microbiome the collection of bacteria and other microbes that live in your gut is unique to you.
A healthy, diverse microbiome, with a high proportion of good bugs, is crucial for your gut health.
There is some evidence that probiotic supplements may improve gut health and relieve symptoms of certain gut-related conditions.
However, the types of bacteria currently available in supplements are often chosen because they are easier to manufacture, not necessarily because they are the best for you. Under certain conditions, these products may also increase resistance to antibiotics and further damage a weakened immune system.
Therefore, some probiotic supplements may not be helpful and, in some cases, may even be harmful.
At ZOE, we believe that the best place to get your regular dose of probiotics is from foods that naturally contain them rather than from the supplements that are currently available on the market.

Should I Take Probiotics For Gas And Bloating
Probiotics are generally considered safe, and many health providers will suggest giving them a try to see if they improve your overall health.5 An easy way to do this is to add more yogurt to your diet, especially if dairy is not responsible for your gas pains.
Purchasing probiotic supplements, however, can be tricky. Its important to remember that there are many different kinds, and that they might all cause your body to react differently. For instance, lactobacillus is a type of bacteria that is commonly used as a probiotic. It has more than 120 species and over a dozen of them are used in different probiotics.4
Other types of good bacteria are the same waythere are lots of different species of the same basic type of bacteria, and it can be difficult to find the one, or amount that works best for you without wreaking havoc on your digestive tract.
Some people who take probiotics may suffer from an upset stomach, diarrhea, gas and bloating after starting to take them.5 Additionally, people who have recently had surgery or have a compromised immune system should avoid taking probiotics, as there is a risk of infection.5
The research on probiotics is still in its early stages. If youve considered taking probiotics for gas and bloating, talk to your doctor first.
