What Are Probiotics And How Do They Help With Your Gut Health
Think of probiotics as good bacteria for gut health. Probiotics regulate the digestive system, increase your bodys ability to absorb vitamins, and may even help with weight loss.
Explains Dr. Sy Powell, Physician and Health Coach, Eating yogurt helps replenish our bacteria with gut friendly helpful bacteria, also called probiotics. Research shows that people who consume high doses of yogurt might benefit and have less GI disturbances. Specific strains of bifidobacteria lactis and lactobacillus acidophilus support the gut microbiome, and result in decreased constipation and bloating, decreased inflammation, and less risk for type 2 diabetes.
When a yogurt is probiotic, it that means its made from milk fermented by that good bacteria, usually lactic acid bacteria or bifidobacteria.
Fermentation happens when bacteria, yeasts and other microorganisms chemically change a food substance. For example, ethyl alcohol found in our beers, wines and liquors is made by fermenting the sugars found in barley, grapes and rice, Dr. Powell continues. We call the intestinal bacteria our gut microbiome. It is made of trillions of different bacterias, viruses, and yeasts that work for us to help break down our food. They also help to absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat.

How Many Live Cultures Are In Yogurt
Yogurt Standards The NYA has established standards for probiotics. For yogurt to be healthy, it must have at least 100 million cultures per gram at the time of manufacture. Frozen yogurt must contain 10 million cultures per gram. If these minimums are met, the Live and Active Cultures seal may be on the label.

How To Thaw Frozen Yogurt
There is only one way to safely thaw out yogurt. Place the frozen yogurt into the refrigerator for a few hours to overnight.
Once thawed out the yogurt may look a bit strange since the water will separate and rise to the top. Do not pour out this water. Instead thoroughly mix the yogurt together and enjoy your yogurt.
Do not thaw out frozen yogurt at room temperature since yogurt that is left out at room temperature too long can develop harmful bacteria that can lead to food poisoning.
Benefit No : Yogurt May Help Prevent Osteoporosis
“Adequate nutrition plays a major role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, and the micronutrients of greatest importance are calcium and vitamin D,” says Jeri Nieves, PhD, MS, director of bone density testing at New Yorkâs Helen Hayes Hospital.
Calcium has been shown to have beneficial effects on bone mass in people of all ages, although the results are not always consistent, says Nieves, also an assistant professor of clinical epidemiology at Columbia University.
“The combination of calcium and vitamin D has a clear skeletal benefit, provided the dose of vitamin D is sufficiently high,” she adds.
And what qualifies as “sufficiently high?”
Currently, 400 IU per day is considered an adequate intake of vitamin D for people ages 51-70, Nieves says. But more may be better.
“This amount is likely to be sufficient for most young adults for skeletal health, although many would argue that for overall health, more than the 400 IU may be required, even at these younger ages,” Nieves said in an email interview.
Nieves believes that older people specifically can benefit from more vitamin D.
Many dairy products, including some yogurts, are made with added vitamin D. Find out which brands have added vitamin D by checking out the table below, and by reading labels when you shop.

Chocolate Frozen Yogurt Recipe Ice Cream Maker
Start with the highest-fat yogurt you can find. Greek yogurt works best, but if its too tart for you, at least opt for whole-milk yogurt.
Add more fat to keep the yogurt smooth, scoopable, and creamy. You can choose heavy cream, coconut cream, cream cheese, or even mascarpone cheese, as long as the fat content is high, preferably at least 30%.
You do need to add some sugar to prevent your frozen treat from icing up. You can use plain white sugar, or try adding flavor with honey or maple syrup.
You could use only those ingredients and get a yummy frozen yogurt, but chocolate makes everything better. Since the cream is naturally sweet and weve added sugar, you can use unsweetened cocoa powder and it wont come out too bitter.
Add all your ingredients to your ice cream maker and churn it up until its the consistency that you like. Eat it right away or store it in a freezer-safe Tupperware container for future indulgence.

As with all yogurt, Yoplaits products are nutrient-dense and beneficial to the body. Understanding the health benefits can help you overcome any guilt you may experience when adding Red Velvet and Boston Creme Pie or Yoplait yogurt to your cart.
Yoplait yogurt is an excellent source of calcium and vitamin D, two nutrients that contribute to the health and strength of your bones. Depending on the yogurt you purchase, one serving provides between 10% and 30% of the daily calcium requirement and 20% of the daily vitamin D requirement. Unfortunately, many Americans do not consume enough calcium or vitamin D. Including Yoplait yogurt in your diet can assist you in meeting your daily nutritional requirements.
On the Yoplait yogurt label, youll notice that it contains live active cultures such as Lactobacillus acidophilus. These cultures are bacteria that naturally occur in the human gut and are occasionally referred to as friendly bacteria or probiotics. Consuming yogurt such as Yoplait contributes to the replenishment of beneficial bacteria in the heart, which may help boost immunity and overall health.

Benefit No : Yogurt May Reduce The Risk Of High Blood Pressure
One study, which followed more than 5,000 university graduates in Spain for about two years, found a link between dairy intake and risk of high blood pressure.
“We observed a 50% reduction in the risk of developing high blood pressure among people eating 2-3 servings of low-fat dairy a day , compared with those without any intake,” Alvaro Alonso, MD, PhD, a researcher in the department of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, says in an email interview.
Although most of the low-fat dairy consumed by the study subjects was as milk, Alvaro believes low-fat yogurt would likely have the same effect. Dutch researchers recently reported that higher dairy consumption was modestly linked to lower blood pressure in 2064 Dutch men and women ages 50 to 75.

How Much Protein And Calories Are In My Yogurt
This is a question I get frequently. Calorie count and protein content will depend on how much whey was removed in the straining process and there really isnt a way to measure that. Even calories are hard guess because through the straining process the end product is much more condensed that the original milk product. The best we can do is estimate.
What Do I Need To Make Yogurt
- Milk
- Pot or Slow Cooker
- Colander
Besides milk youll need some plain yogurt as a starter culture for your initial batch. Then you can use yogurt from that batch for your next batch and so on. There is no need to buy a special starter culture, all you need is plain yogurt. The plain yogurt will act as a starter culture to introduce healthy bacteria/probiotics to your homemade yogurt. It is essential that the yogurt you use has live cultures in it. Most grocery stores sell plain yogurt with live cultures but just be sure to check the label on the container confirm that it has l. bulgaricus and s. thermophilus in it.
You will also need some cheesecloth to strain the yogurt . I use and recommend this cheesecloth brand because its 100% unbleached cotton, is high grade, is very durable for multiple uses, and you get a ton of it. Overall its the best value I have found for the quality.
Youll also need a thermometer. Heating the milk to right temperature and then reducing it to the right temperature are both critical to the success of your yogurt.
The other item youll need is either a slow cooker or a large, heavy stock pot and a colander for straining.

An Introduction To Yogurt
Yogurt is a dairy product, derived from milk, which is cultured or fermented.
For probiotic content, you need to look more towards the fermented variety, as this is where the greatest benefit will be found.
As the fermentation process progresses, cultures are added to the milk, which contain the ability to produce lactic acid.
All of this helps to culture the good bacteria, therefore giving yogurt its probiotic content.
The most common types of cultures added to yogurt production are lactobacillus and streptococcus thermophilus, including ones you have no doubt heard about from health magazines and adverts, such as lactobacillus casei and bifidus.
These help to give yogurt its major probiotic abilities, such as boosting gut health and immune system function.
Studies have shown that these types of bacteria are ideal for maintaining the smooth running of the gut, and are hardy enough to withstand stomach acids and other conditions.
