Can Probiotics Help Ibs

Best Probiotics for IBS, Constipation, Bloating, Diarrhea, Gas

Probiotics, also known as live cultures, have been shown in many clinical trials to support the health of those with IBS. Many people ask us ‘Can you treat IBS with probiotics?’ If you think you have IBS, you should always have your symptoms diagnosed by a doctor first however, probiotics are a safe, natural option to try. Probiotics are fine to take alongside most prescription and over the counter medications for IBS.

Different probiotic strains can be beneficial for different symptoms of IBS. Clinical studies show the best probiotic supplements for IBS contain strains such as:

Probiotics Even Inactive Ones May Relieve Ibs Symptoms

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic gut-brain disorder that can cause a variety of uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms including abdominal pain and diarrhea, constipation, or a mix of the two. IBS can reduce quality of life, often results in missed school or work, and can have a substantial economic impact.

Physicians diagnose IBS by identifying symptoms laid out in the Rome Criteria, a set of diagnostic measures developed by a group of more than 100 international experts. Limited diagnostic testing is also done, to help exclude other conditions that could present with similar symptoms.

Although the precise cause of IBS remains unknown, recent research suggests that an imbalance in intestinal microbiota and a dysfunctional intestinal barrier may be involved in the development of IBS in some people. Because of this, methods to restore the microbiota have been explored as treatment for this condition.

Pathophysiology Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Recent research suggests that IBS has a multifactorial etiology that includes alterations in gut motility, small-bowel bacterial overgrowth, microscopic inflammation, and visceral hypersensitivity. Some of these postulated components of IBS pathophysiology may potentially lend themselves to probiotic therapeutic benefits.

Can Probiotics Improve Ibs Symptoms

A comprehensive 2016 review concluded that its unclear how effective probiotics are for treating IBS. It cited small study sizes and lack of consistent data .

However, a number of studies have shown that specific probiotics may have the potential to target specific symptoms. Probiotics from the Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Saccharomyces families have shown particular promise (

15 ).

A German study of a two-strain probiotic liquid known as Pro-Symbioflor also had promising results. In this study, 297 patients were treated for eight weeks and experienced a 50% decrease in general symptoms, including abdominal pain .

Meanwhile, Symprove is a four-strain probiotic that was tested in 186 patients in the UK. It was found to reduce overall symptom severity after 12 weeks of treatment .

Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 capsules have also been shown to marginally reduce pain, bloating and problems with bowel habits in all subtypes of IBS .

While some of these results are promising, there is some inconsistency between studies. In addition, most strains only have one study demonstrating their effectiveness. Therefore, more research is needed to confirm the results.

Summary Preliminary research has found 10 probiotic strains that may help improve overall symptoms of IBS. However, results have been inconsistent, and most strains have only one small study behind them. Further research is required.

Can Probiotics Make Sibo Worse Or Possibly Trigger It

Even though probiotics may help some people in healing from and eliminating SIBO due to the actions discussed above, there are still people who may not benefit or who may get worse from probiotics if they have SIBO.

There are many doctors and researchers that do not advise patients with severe SIBO to use probiotics because in these types of people severe intestinal motility may be an underlying cause.

If someone has a major issue with intestinal motility, adding more bacteria that can stick in the small intestine may make symptoms worse. If the small bowel just isnt sweeping normal bacteria and food residue down and out, then adding more bacteria can add to the problem.

So in summary, yes it is possible that probiotics can make SIBO worse for those people who have major issues with motility in the small intestine.

In general, if you are someone with a motility disorder it may be best to test a probiotic strain that has been shown to help intestinal transit time. If that and a few other tests dont help, then it may be the case that you are just adding more fuel to the fire.

On the other hand, if someone has SIBO without severe intestinal motility and deals with inflammation and other digestive challenges, using probiotics may be beneficial to aid in healing.

It really depends on the individual case which is why its important to talk with your doctor about it.

Possible Side Effects Related To Probiotic Use

While probiotics are generally considered safe for both children and adults and serious side effects are rare in healthy people, some potential adverse effects may occur in certain populations.

People who are vulnerable to infections, including individuals recovering from surgery, critically ill infants, and those who have indwelling catheters or are chronically ill are more at risk of experiencing adverse reactions after taking probiotics .

For example, probiotics may cause serious systemic infections, diarrhea, excessive immune system stimulation, abdominal cramping, and nausea in immunocompromised individuals .

Less serious side effects related to taking probiotics can occasionally occur in healthy people as well, including bloating, gas, hiccups, skin rashes, and constipation .

While probiotics are generally considered safe for most people, its always a good idea to consult your healthcare provider before adding any supplement to you or your childs diet.

Nhs Recommends Probiotics For Ibs

The 3 Best Probiotics For IBS

The NHS includes the use of probiotics as part of tips recommended to help relieve IBS symptoms23.

This is a big milestone in the world of probiotics because, although probiotics are routinely prescribed in many European hospitals, it wasnt always part of the NHS recommendations. The NICE guidelines , which provides evidence-based guidelines/framework that many medical and health care professionals work within, now recommends that probiotics can be used for at least 4 weeks for managing IBS related symptoms24.

The NHS website states that: “Probiotics may help reduce bloating and flatulence in some people with IBS.”

The inclusion of probiotics for IBS relief was due to the result of a systematic review by Moayyedi et al., published in 2010, which concluded that probiotics were effective in the management of IBS25.

    IBS – Can Probiotics Help?

As we have shown, probiotics can induce diarrhea. However, once you get past the adjustment phase, it becomes a nonissue. While probiotics and diarrhea are inextricably linked, the former is a long-term solution for smoother stools. In other words, probiotics reduce diarrhea far more than they induce it.

Diarrhea â defined as three loose stools a dayâ is an unpleasant but all-too-common ailment that can result from a wide range of conditions, including viral and bacterial infections, food intolerances, irritable bowel syndrome , and even as a side effect of certain medications. When it happens, taking the best probiotics for diarrhea can help treat your stomach afflictions by reestablishing a normal balance of bacteria in your intestines.

According to Dr. Sari Eitches, an LA-based, board-certified doctor of internal medicine, the answer to the question, âcan probiotics help diarrhea?â is a resounding yes.

“Probiotics can help restore the balance of the diverse microbiome that can get wiped out during a diarrheal illness,” she told Bustle in an email.

Dr. Eitches has some recommendations for choosing probiotics as well. “For prolonged diarrheal illness, I also recommend adding a multi-strain probiotic which will help repopulate the gut,â she advises. She suggest looking for a probiotic with a minimum of two to 10 strains and at least 10 to 50 billion CFUs per serving. She recommends looking for two strains in particular:

What To Look For In The Best Probiotic For Diarrhea

    1. Look for the right strains

Maintaining a diverse gut microflora may be beneficial for your general digestive health, but the best probiotic for diarrhea should specifically contain strains of Saccharomyces boulardii and Lactobacillus acidophilus.

    S. boulardii has been found to significantly reduce the duration and frequency of acute diarrhea, while also improving the overall consistency of the stool.8 Oral supplementation of L. acidophilus, which is one of the most well-studied probiotic strains, was similarly found to potentially reduce diarrhea duration and frequency.9 Both strains are also known to be safe with little, if any, negative side effects.

    2. Look at the CFUs

Along with specific probiotic strains, look at the CFUs in your probiotic. CFUs, or colony forming units, measure the amount of active bacterial strains in the supplement. A meta-study published in The Lancet showed that a median dose of 6 billion CFUs per day reduced antibiotic-associated diarrhea by 52 percent, travelers diarrhea by 8 percent, and acute diarrhea caused by other factors by 34 percent.10 For diarrhea, we recommend a probiotic supplement containing at least 10 billion CFUs.

    Examples Of Probiotic Strains

    • Lactobacillus strains, such as L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, and L. casei
    • Bifidobacterium strains, such as B. infantis, B. longum, and B. bifidum

Researchers have also begun to develop and patent probiotic formulas intended for clinical research. One example, VSL#3, has been used in several clinical trials for IBS. The greatest benefit was observed in people who took VSL#3 for pouchitis.

However, as pointed out by a 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis, the results of the studies were inconsistent and the research methods used were not particularly strong.

Choose a product that contains live strains of bacteria and be sure to check the manufacturer’s suggestions for storing it. Some probiotics need to be refrigerated while others can be kept in a cool, dry place.

    Amazing 4U2 Probiotics 50 Billion 13 Strains. Best ...

The speed at which probiotics take effect can vary based on the probiotic strains, the CFU dosage, and your own metabolism, meaning it may not always be an instant fix. You can generally expect probiotics to reduce your diarrhea duration by about half a day to two days on average.11

Probiotics may play an essential role in reducing the frequency, duration, and severity of diarrhea. Choosing A Quality Probiotic Supplement

Probiotic manufacturing is not closely regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration , and some label claims do not stand up to scrutiny.

In one study of 26 commercial probiotics, none fully supported their label claims, and some of them contained unacceptable microorganisms .

This means that purchasing the most expensive probiotic doesnt automatically mean its the highest quality or best probiotic for IBS.

To choose the best probiotic for IBS, choose probiotic supplements that disclose the following:

    • List of species
    • Number of colony-forming units in the billions
    • Manufactured date
    • Allergen free
    • Good Manufacturing Practices certification
    • Lab-verification through independent lab testing for probiotic species and potency
