When To Take Probiotics After Antibiotics

Best Probiotics for Women: Product Reviews- Garden of Life, Renew Life and Nature’s Way

If youre wondering when to take probiotics with antibiotics, a good rule of thumb is to wait at least two hours after your dose of antibiotics. This gives the antibiotics time to get through your digestive system and into your bloodstream. If you take them together, the antibiotics will wipe out the bacteria in your probiotic supplement.

Its a great idea to take your probiotics right before bedtime. That way your probiotic will be busily working all night long while you sleep. As far as taking probiotics after a round of antibiotics, wed recommend at least a couple of weeks of high doses of probiotics to help repopulate the damaged gut flora!

What Is Gut Flora

You have a world of microorganisms living in your digestive system. This collection of microorganisms is your gut flora, also known as the gut microbiotaa complex ecosystem that consists of approximately 300 to 500 bacterial species. Thats nearly 10 times the number of cells in the human body.

Our knowledge of the interaction between gut health and overall health is still in its early stages. We do know that colonies of beneficial bacteria help you digest and absorb your food, fight off germs that make you sick and even make a large portion of your serotonin, which helps keep your moods level.

Science is continuing to discover ways that gut bacteria are directly linked to your health. We know that its normal to have balanced populations of beneficial gut bacteria and bad bacteria, and a healthy gut is able to keep the bad guys in check. But researchers are just now beginning to understand what happens when other factorslike antibiotics, diet and stresstilt the scales in the wrong direction.

Probiotics For Overall Health

When purchasing any probiotic for overall health, a person should be aware that there is little research into the health benefits of probiotics and may find it difficult to determine their effectiveness.

While it is common for some people to take probiotic supplements to promote their overall health, and suggested by many healthcare providers for various conditions, it is important to understand that not all probiotics are effective or safe for everyone . It is much more important for an individual to support their overall health by focusing on diet and lifestyle as a whole rather than on taking one specific supplement.

The health benefits of probiotics are strain-specific, and probiotics for overall health often contain a lot of live microorganisms rather than single strains. This makes it difficult for a person to determine whether research supports the health benefits that the manufacturers claim.

Three probiotic options for overall health include:

Persona claims that this vegetarian probiotic can support healthy digestion, immune health, and emotional well-being.

Each capsule contains 10 billion CFU of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG.

  • in the morning, take with or after breakfast
  • in the evening, take with a snack or dinner
  • at night, take an hour before going to bed

When Should I Take Probiotics When Taking Antibiotics

Generally, with a few exceptions aside, it is best to take our probiotic supplements in the morning with breakfast. If you are taking a probiotic containing the strains Lactobacillus acidophilus Rosell-52, Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell-11 and Bifidobacterium lactis Lafti B94, you would still be able to follow this recommendation alongside antibiotics and take both with your brekkie.

However, if you are taking different strains, it is best to give a 2 hour gap between antibiotics and taking the probiotic supplement. So, if you have been instructed by your doctor to take your antibiotics with breakfast, you would take the medication first in this instance and leave a 2 hour gap before taking the other probiotics. Its a good idea to take our supplements with food, so in this case, with your lunch or a mid-morning snack.

Without probiotics, a single round of antibiotics can still affect your gut health a year later. Thats right, a week of antibiotics and you could have digestive issues for 51 weeks, or longer. Gut Bacteria And Immune Health

Most importantly, a takeover of bad bacteria can dramatically affect immunity and leave room for infection, disease and chronic illnesses to develop. The gut is the first line of communication between the external environment and the immune system. The two work together to mutually regulate our bodys reaction to harmful pathogens.

But when the immune system and gut are working together, things are working smoothly. This encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria, which improves immunity and gut function. It creates stronger responses to pathogens while makes the body more tolerant to your natural gut bacteria.

Learning About The Microbiome

The community of microorganisms that lives on us and in us is called the âmicrobiome,â and itâs a hot topic for research. The Human Microbiome Project, supported by the National Institutes of Health from 2007 to 2016, played a key role in this research by mapping the normal bacteria that live in and on the healthy human body. With this understanding of a normal microbiome as the basis, researchers around the world, including many supported by NIH, are now exploring the links between changes in the microbiome and various diseases. Theyâre also developing new therapeutic approaches designed to modify the microbiome to treat disease and support health.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is among the many agencies funding research on the microbiome. Researchers supported by NCCIH are studying the interactions between components of food and microorganisms in the digestive tract. The focus is on the ways in which diet-microbiome interactions may lead to the production of substances with beneficial health effects.

Health Starts In Your Gut

Ive partnered with Renew Life® Probiotics to create this post! Enjoy!

The real food community has been extolling the virtues of a healthy gut for years so its a blessing to see the mainstream media catch up.

Research in the past two decades has confirmed that more than 70% of our immune system is in the gut. The implication, good health is linked to good gut health. A big part of good gut health includes maintaining that high-fiber diet and taking gut health supplements when needed. However, what do you do when your gut health is in bad shape, here we look at several factors, including diet, stress, and antibiotics.

Gut Flora

The whole gut, from end to end, is full of micro-organisms, both beneficial bacteria and harmful bacteria. They live in a harmony as long as there is an ideal balance and they promote normal digestive functions. Antibiotics kill both the bad and the beneficial microbes. Scientific studies have confirmed this .

With proper planning and patience, it is very much possible to help restore digestive balance. There are steps that you can follow to help you feel your best self.

First, detoxify the gut. Talk to your nearest natural health practitioner about a herbal preparation that will clean your gut.

Taking Antibiotics Can Change Your Gut Bacteria For Months

Antibiotics are beneficial in many cases, but taking them too often may be leading us down a harmful path. In addition to contributing to widespread antibiotic resistance, one study led by the University of Amsterdam finds another reason for doctors and patients alike to use discretion when it comes to starting antibiotics.

Specifically, researchers found that just a weeklong course of antibiotic treatment can lead to dramatic changes in the bacterial population of the human gutand those changes can last up to a full year after taking the medication.

More than 60 adults took part in the study and received either a placebo or a course of one of four common antibiotics: clindamycin, ciprofloxacin, minocycline, or amoxicillin. Samples of both oral and gut bacteria were taken before and after the study, and follow-up samples were taken throughout the year. While the oral bacteria population seemed to recover quickly, the gut was another story.

Among the most notable results was an increase in the number of antibiotic-resistant genes present in the gut microbiome for all groups. Additionally, participants in the clindamycin and ciprofloxacin group saw a notable decline in certain types of beneficial bacteria associated with reduced oxidative stress and a healthy inflammatory response, leaving researchers concerned about the potential effects of a decrease in gut diversity.

It Doesnt Require Refrigeration

Probiotics after antibiotics

I personally recommend probiotics that require no refrigeration as to give you the convenience of being able to take it anywhere at any time. You may not always have access to a refrigerator or other cooling device, so choosing a probiotic that is specifically formulated to stay at room temperature is highly recommended.

Refrigerated products can also be damaged during shipping. There are some good ones out there that do not fit this criterion but I get concerned if the probiotics are properly handled during the delivery process. You simply must do some research and find what is best for you.

Important Tips For Supporting General Health Whilst On Antibiotics

  • Eat fermented or prebioticfoods. These can help rebalance the gut microbiome and optimise gut health after a course of antibiotics.
  • Avoid refined sugary foods, as these feed the harmful bacteria and yeasts which often overgrow due to antibiotic use.
  • Avoid alcohol, even if not contraindicated with your course of antibiotics. Alcohol can also disrupt the gut microbiome and negatively impact immune function, which may hinder your body’s efforts to fight infection.
  • Ensure you complete your course of antibiotics. Unpleasant side effects can make it difficult to continue taking antibiotics but failing to complete the course can increase the risk of antibiotic resistance.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Don’t let the antibiotics do all the work – include a selection of immune-boosting foods containing vitamin C and other antioxidants, including citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables.

Should You Consider A Prebiotics Plus Probiotic Combo

When choosing a probiotic supplement, there are lots of options that include both prebiotics and probiotics. If you dont consume much fiber in your daily diet, or youre just looking to boost your daily fiber intake, a prebiotic/probiotic combo supplement is worth consideration. Bacteria feed on fiber, so prebiotics are beneficial when replenishing healthy bacteria is your goal.
