Can Probiotics Help With Body Odor

Why Bacteria Cause Armpit Odor

Dermatologists Debunk 8 Body-Odor Myths | Debunked | Science Insider

It might seem unpleasant to think about, but there are multitudes of bacteria living in your armpits. Contrary to popular opinion, it’s not sweat that makes your armpits give off an odorit’s the bacteria living there. As a study published in FEMS Microbiology Ecology explains, the microbial biotransformation of natural secretions in your armpit plays a role in the formation of odor.

Since the hair follicles and sweat glands within the armpit provide a warm and rich environment for bacteria, they thrive under your arms. This can lead to odor and present a challenge to minimize it. The type of bacteria present may affect how foul that odor ends up being. Specific armpit bacteria, like Corynebacteria, have shown to correspond with greater levels of body odor, according to the FEMS Microbiology Ecology study.

Foods That Helps And Improve Body Odor

Battle body odor with your daily dietBody odor can be because of hormonal changes in the body, inordinate perspiring, an undesirable eating routine, and hereditary qualities. The reasons can be numerous particularly during the summer season, however, when your body smells hostile, you may begin to lose your certainty and even become progressively unsure.

Despite the fact that deodorants and antiperspirants are accessible to control body odor, they dont treat the basic reason. As a rule, the issue can be fathomed effectively by simply following a solid eating routine. What you eat and dont eat may add to the force of your bodys common smells.

Using Prebiotics For Underarm Odor

Another way to try controlling odor is by using prebiotics. You’ve likely heard of probiotics, which are live bacteria that can benefit your body’s natural microbiome. Prebiotics also benefit your body by providing nutrients that foster the growth of good bacteria that are already part of your body.

Not all bacteria are bad for you. In fact, killing all bacteria may do more harm than good. Prebiotic ingredients like xylitol help support the good bacteria and crowd out the bad. If armpit odor is an issue for you, a prebiotic deodorant could help keep your skin in healthy balance by promoting the growth of good bacteria to help reduce odor.

Amines In Probiotic Foods May Trigger Headaches

How to Get Rid of Fecal Body Odor

Some probiotic-rich foods, like yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi, contain biogenic amines (11,

14 ).

Amines can excite the central nervous system, increase or decrease blood flow and may trigger headaches in people sensitive to the substance .

One study found that low-histamine diets reduced headaches in 75% of participants. However, a review of 10 controlled studies found no significant effect of dietary amines on headaches .

More research is needed to determine whether or not amines can be direct triggers of headaches or migraines in some people.

Keeping a food diary including any headache symptoms you might experience can help clarify whether fermented foods are problematic for you.

If probiotic-rich foods trigger your symptoms, a probiotic supplement may be a better choice.

Summary

Fermented foods rich in probiotics naturally contain amines. Some people may experience headaches after eating these foods, and should instead opt for probiotic supplements.

How Are Probiotics Linked To Body Odor

Probiotics have become very popular nowadays due to their many health benefits. One of the advantages is to promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria. This way, your food will be digested and get absorbed more effectively. However, probiotics are also good for the skin.

The skin is usually covered by billions of bacteria, which add up to 2000 types. They normally live on the inner fold of the elbow. The good news is that these bacteria usually keep us healthy and free from infection. In most cases, these bacteria typically keep each other in check and normally work in harmony.

Although these bacteria are good for the body, there are some bad bacterial that are found in the underarms. Ideally, if there is a proper balance of bacteria in the armpits, you can hardly have body odor. However, when the bad bacteria overshadow the good bacteria, chances of getting body odor are very high. To mitigate this problem, you should consider using probiotics products.

Not all bacteria in your armpits feed off your sweat, thereby producing odor-causing thioalcohols. If you are able to introduce a non-thioalcohols producing alcohol bacteria in the armpits, you will be able to create a competition for the living space of different bacteria found there.

When To See A Doctor

Usually, conditions caused by vaginal imbalance are mild to moderate, and dont cause severe health problems. However, BV and yeast infections can cause serious discomfort if left untreated. And you should always seek quick treatment for a UTI to avoid possible complications.

If youve recently had sex and notice itching, burning or other unusual symptoms in your vaginal area, you should also talk with your doctor. You could have a sexually transmitted infection, such as trichomoniasis.

Schedule an appointment with your doctor if you suspect you have BV, a yeast infection, or a UTI. Seek immediate medical treatment if you have:

  • pain on your sides or lower back
  • a high temperature

Impact Of Skin Care Products On Skin Microbiome And Metabolome

Digestive & Immune Power Duo

At the University of California San Diego, we have tested the impact of sunscreen , skin moisturizer , foot powder , and antiperspirant on the skin microbiome and chemistry.

Specifically the impact of foot powder and antiperspirants was huge on the skin microbiome. The bacterial diversity increased a lot during the use. The dominant bacteria Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium decreased a lot during use while other low-abundant bacteria increased in abundance during usage. Most peoples skin microbiome went back to their initial skin microbiome after the experiments. Some participants, however, also had worse smelling armpits and feet after the whole experiment. The use of these products remains tricky: it is a biological murder. While most people will not have huge problems, for some people it has long-lasting and unpleasant consequences. The impact of sunscreen and skin moisturizers was very low on the skin microbiome, although the chemical diversity increased.

Skin care products are widely used, and some ingredients can have far-reaching impacts. For the most part and for most people, there is no problem to use them. The skin microbiome and metabolome is strong and resilient enough to endure these external perturbations.

Sequencing Data Processing And Network Analysis

Quality check of the raw sequence data was performed using a Quantitative Insights into Microbial Ecology pipeline . The total reads were grouped into OTUs using the Greengenes database with a sequence identity threshold of 97%. All samples were rarefied to a depth of 2,720 reads. Furthermore, a prediction of the metabolic functions in the axillary microbiome was performed using the PICRUSt algorithm. For a network analysis of the axillary microbiome, we used SPIEC-EASI. OTUs< 0.01% were filtered for network analysis. We constructed the network of the axillary microbiome using the neighborhood algorithm and the Stability Approach to Regularization Selection method with a minimum lambda threshold of 0.1. This analysis was performed using the SPIEC-EASI R package . The network topological statistic coefficients were calculated using igraph R package . These features includes nodes , edges , density , degree , transitivity , and node closeness centrality .

Update Your Laundry Routine

If you struggle to get rid of body odor, try updating your laundry routine with these tips:

  • Wash sweaty clothing ASAP: Dont allow sweat to sink into the fabric, or youll have difficulty getting the odor out of your clothes.
  • Wash clothing inside out: The detergent will do a better job of removing sweat and odor from the inside of your shirts.
  • Add 1 cup of vinegar to your laundry cycle: To get rid of tough odors, add vinegar to the load. You can also substitute vinegar with 1 cup of baking soda .
  • Ditch the dryer: Warm, musty dryers can worsen the odor on your clothes by baking them in even further. Try air-drying or line-drying your clothes for better results.

Reasons For Bad Breath

Bad breath, known medically as halitosis, is socially embarrassing and can cause relationship problems. The most common cause of bad breath is poor oral hygiene. The food particles left in the mouth later break down by the bacteria to form foul-smelling sulfur compounds.

Other causes include

  • Eating pungent foods like onions and garlic
  • Plaque build-up on your teeth
  • Nose, throat, and also sinus infections
  • Stomach, liver, and lung problems
  • Certain diseases like cancer and acid reflux.

The best methods to prevent bad breath include regular teeth brushing, flossing, tongue cleaning, and regular visits to your dentist. Professional cleaning of teeth twice yearly and hygienically maintained dentures can help prevent bad breath. Simultaneously, avoid spicy foods and sugar and limit coffee content in your daily diet. Hydrate your mouth and eat raw fruits while avoiding alcohol as precautionary steps.

If bad breath persists even after following the above methods, consult your doctor to determine other underlying health conditions. The more serious causes include ketoacidosis which results from very low insulin levels, vomiting associated with bowel obstruction, bronchiectasis, and aspiration pneumonia.

Medical Treatments For Body Odor

If you’ve tried these tips and haven’t seen an improvement, call your doctor. Something else may be causing your body odor, such as a fungal infection. Or, you just may need a stronger treatment.

Some options include:

  • Prescription antiperspirants/deodorants are stronger than what you can get over the counter. These are usually the first treatment step for body odor.
  • Antibiotics, either topical or oral, can help reduce bacteria on the skin.
  • Botox injectionscan reduce your sweat glands’ ability to produce sweat. This is not a permanent fix, though. Treatment needs to be repeated every few months.
  • Laser treatment reduces hair follicles. This may not help with body odor, though.
  • Surgery to remove sweat glands can be done in extreme cases.

What About Probiotic Deodorants Against Body Odor

The idea behind a probiotic deodorant is that it will deliver good bacteria to your underarms and with time, your body odor will disappear naturally. This is a great proposition given that you are set to keep using your current deodorant stick indefinitely. The probiotic deodorant also avoids the chemicals in your non-probiotic product and it will not try to inhibit your natural processes such as sweating. Instead, the probiotic deodorant will complement your bodys natural functions. So why would anyone reject such a sweet deal?

Okay, from what I have gathered, the deal does not feel as good as it sounds. First, when using probiotic deodorant, you will most likely still sweat like a fountain. Second, the smell will not go away right away, but it will take a bit of patience from the user. Another thing that surfaced from the user reviews that I sampled is that these deodorants lack the smoothness that we are used to in traditional products, and they do not come with that pleasant smell that is in my underarms right now. On the plus side, they do not always leave the stains that are associated with the non-probiotic kind. Of course, like almost any other probiotic products, they are expensive. Seriously $20 or more for most good products.

How Does Body Odor Work

While aluminum-based antiperspirants try to block your sweat by plugging your sweat ducts, body odor is actually caused by certain types of bacteria feeding on the amino acids and other compounds present in that sweat. As the B.O. bacteria feed, they produce an unpleasant odor.

But not all bacteria are stinky! Lots of different species live in a forest habitatnot just skunksand the same is true for your skin microbiome. In fact, many kinds of bacteria contribute to your overall skin health.

So, controlling body odor naturally seems seems simple enough. Disrupt the B.O. bacteria and supercharge the healthy bacteria. Some natural deodorants use probiotics, specific cultures of lactobacillus, to introduce new bacteria to the skin. Its the same approach as eating yogurt to promote gut health.

Theres one problem with this approach: each persons skin microbiome is different, based on individual diet, genetic makeup, and overall health. How do you know if the probiotic strains in your natural deodorant are compatible with your own unique skin environment?

But dont lose hope. Theres another approach. What if, instead of introducing new good bacteria, you could help increase the good bacteria already living on your skin?
