Is Yogurt Or Probiotics Better

Probiotics In Kefir Vs Yogurt

Is probiotic yogurt effective? (Marketplace)

Does kefir have more probiotics than yogurt?

Yes, this is primarily due to the differences in the production process!

  • Kefir bacteria and yeast cultures build naturally through a fermentation process, more similar to the creation of sourdough or kombucha.
  • Producers of yogurt add the probiotics into the process artificially, which means yogurt bacteria levels are lower and less varied than those produced naturally in kefir.

Kefir contains 3x more probiotics than yogurt, and:

  • Kefir contains 12 live active probiotic cultures and 15-20 billion CFU, colony-forming units
  • Yogurt includes 1-5 live active probiotic cultures and 6 billion CFU

Benefits Of Yogurt With Lactobacillus

The genus Lactobacillus is one of the most common bacteria classified as a probiotic, according to Harvard Health Publications. Probiotics promote the growth of âgoodâ bacteria through fermented foods like yogurt and over-the-counter supplements.

And when good bacteria or live cultures are present, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says their presence may change or repopulate intestinal bacteria to balance gut flora. Which is great news since this also creates an environment not suitable for harmful bacteria. Basically, what all of this means is that probiotics may have a positive impact on your overall health, especially gastrointestinal health.

More specifically, the Academy points to the role probiotics play in managing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Additionally, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health points out that probiotics show promise in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea and induction or maintenance of remission in ulcerative colitis.

However, the NCCIH does stress that in general, researchers still donât know which probiotics are helpful and which are not. Plus, itâs still not known how much you would need to take in a supplement or consume from foods in order to get the most health benefits. But the good news is, probiotics are safe, particularly in healthy people.

How To Make Probiotic Yogurt

Tools and Ingredients Required:

  • ½ gallon raw, grass-fed milk from cows, sheep or goat*
  • Mesophilic yogurt cultures

*Can substitute pasteurized milk if desired

Note: This is a two-day process

  • First, test the temperature of slow cooker. Add ½ gallon tap water to your slow cooker, and turn on low for 2 ½ hours. Use your food thermometer to check temperature. If the water is above 115 degrees F, its too high, and it will essentially kill the raw milks healthy bacteria. If youre not using raw milk, above 115 degrees F is OK. If the heat of the water is between 110115 degrees F, you are free to proceed.
  • Unplug the slow cooker and allow to cool to room temperature. Dump out the water and dry. Add the dairy milk of choice, cover with the lid and turn on low. Set a timer for 2 ½ hours. Turn off slow cooker, and unplug it. Do not remove the lid to peek! Allow milk to remain in the slow cooker, lid in place, for 3 hours.
  • Remove 2 cups of the milk to a stainless bowl, and add the starter culture according to the instructions. Mix thoroughly and pour back into the crock, and replace the lid. Immediately wrap the unplugged crock in towels , and let set for 1824 hours undisturbed. This is the culturing period.
  • After 1824 hours, remove from the slow cooker by filling clean, dry jars. Seal and refrigerate for at least 68 hours. While cooling, the yogurt will continue to thicken. Yogurt made from raw dairy will not be as thick as conventionally made yogurt available in the store.

Okay Whats So Great About Instant Pot Yogurt

Before electric pressure cookers became a thing, I made my yogurt at home on the stovetop and using a heating pad to keep the temperature even while the yogurt fermented. It works just fine, but an Instant Pot makes the whole process even easier! Thats because the Instant Pot is programmed to keep the fermentation temperature at an even 110°F during the culturing time. It makes it completely no fuss! I have never had a batch of yogurt fail since getting my Instant Pot years ago.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Fermented Foods

Fermented foods have existed for centuries as a staple of many cultures diets. In the past, before refrigeration, fermentation was a great method to preserve foods and drinks for longer.

The micro-organisms in the food are converted to alcohol, acids, and other organic compounds. These can then act as natural preservatives, keeping the food fresh. Fermentation is known to generate slightly sour, strong, and very distinctive flavors and odors.

It is believed that fermented foods are highly beneficial for your health. The sugars and starches in the foods undergo changes that enhance the naturally present bacteria.

The breakdown of the components of fermented foods often makes them easier to digest. This means that they cause fewer issues traveling through your body, leaving you in a happier and more comfortable state.

It is believed that the fermentation process increases the bioavailability of foods. The vitamins and minerals contained within foods are made more readily available for your body to absorb. At the same time, increasing the probiotics in your body helps them to make B vitamins and produce Vitamin K.

Probiotics support the growth of the mucosa . The function of this is to act as a natural barrier and to keep the immune system strong. The fewer good bacteria you have in your gut, the more inflamed the wall could become.

Good Bacteria At A Bargain Price

Finally, consider how much you spend on probiotics. If you’re like me, its a lot! With homemade 24 hour yogurt, the cost is equal to a carton of milk plus a little prep time. But stop! Dont throw those pills and capsules out. Its not a case of one or the other, its the more the merrier! Im not suggesting 24 hour yoghurt replace your probiotics. A good multi-strain probiotic will contain strains of beneficial bacteria not available in homemade, 24 hour yoghurt. A probiotic can also be used, in addition to, or in stead of a traditional yogurt starter culture. Read more on Yogurt starter cultures here.

Why Yogurt May Not Be Enough

Yogurt is a great health food with plenty of nutritional benefits, including calcium and protein. Its even more famous for being a probiotic food and yes, it does indeed contain probiotic bacteria as a result of the fermentation process.

However, while yogurt can provide health benefits to some degree, it simply cant be relied upon as an effective source of probiotics.

There are several factors that can cause yogurt to fall short of delivering the quality of probiotics that would actually benefit your gut.

Kefir Vs Yogurt Vs Probiotic Pills: Which One Has The Most Benefits

The term probiotic comes from the Greek word pro and biotic . This means when probiotics are swallowed, they will have a beneficial effect on the human body. Not only do they restore the balance of the intestinal flora that gets damaged from the use of antibiotics, but they also protect our body from allergies and support the bodys defenses. This article is about Kefir vs Yogurt vs Probiotic pills, we are going to point out the differences and make detailed comparisons between each of them.

According to the WHO , probiotics that contain one or more cultures of living microorganisms have a beneficial effect on our health. These microorganisms produce lactic acid and belong to the Lactobacillus family, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces yeasts.

Many people consider yogurt and milk kefir to be the same thing. They think that these two milk-based products produced by fermentation. are the same but yogurt and kefir have a couple of differences.

    How Effective Are Probiotics

Researchers are currently unsure how effective probiotic supplements are for treating conditions. Theres constant research on the topic. While many research studies have had positive results on the impact of probiotic supplements, more research is still needed.

Its also important to keep in mind that unlike medications, dietary supplements do not need to be approved by the FDA. This means that manufacturers can sell supplements simply with claims of safety and effectiveness.

Always talk with your healthcare provider before taking a supplement or giving one to your child. Supplements might interfere with medicines you may be taking. If you are pregnant or breast feeding, check with your provider before taking any supplement.

Reasons Kefir Is Better Than Yogurt Sometimes

    By Heather

Iâm a huge fan of both kefir and yogurt, but there are a few reasons kefir is better than yogurt in certain circumstances, or for certain purposes. Kefir and yogurt are both great forms of dairy to consume, so long as theyâre from ethical, humane and organic sources. You should also be sure to choose no sugar added varieties, and preferably low fat or plain kefir and yogurt, at all times. You can always sweeten them with some healthy and calorie-free all natural sweetener if you want. Kefir is basically yogurt in a more powerful form, even though theyâre made very differently. Kefir is milk cultured with a beneficial yeast for the body, not a harmful one, thatâs wonderful for aiding in everything from better digestion to immunity and more. Yogurt is simply cultured milk that has been fermented with a culture that doesnât have yeast, but still contains probiotics. Both have benefits, but there are some reasons kefir is better than yogurt, which Iâll share with you below.

  • Mood Food
  • Yogurt Is High In Histamine

    Not all probiotics are equal

Some people are sensitive to histamine. Fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese have higher concentrations of histamine. Side effects of histamine intolerance include: headaches, congestion, indigestion, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, and more.

    How Long Do Probiotics Last

Most probiotic supplements indicate a shelf life on their label of about one year. According to regulations, this means that the number of probiotics present in the supplement at the time of manufacturing must remain the same until they reach that expiry date.

Unfortunately, probiotics are very sensitive to environmental conditions, and elements like heat and light can kill them in both supplements and food. This means that if the product has been handled improperly during transportation, or if you stored it incorrectly, the probiotics may no longer be living.

Expired probiotics will not harm you, however you will not experience their benefits if they are expired.

The difficulty is that labelling regulations require manufacturers to put the total number of probiotics on their container, but this weight could include both the living and dead microorganisms.

You might purchase a product that claims it contains 10 billion live bacterial cultures, but there is no good way of knowing whether or not those bacteria are alive or dead. For this reason, researchers at Harvard Health Publishing recommend skipping the supplement altogether and getting your daily dose of probiotics from fermented foods like yogurt.

    Yogurt to the rescue!

Has a doctor ever suggested that you “Eat some yogurt!” when youre sick and taking antibiotics? Its a smart thing to do. Yogurt is chock-full of protein, vitamins, and calcium. Its also a superb source of good, helpful bacteria. Another word for these good bacteria is probiotics.

The good bacteria found in yogurt are known as live cultures. That means they are still alive when you eat them. Yogurt usually contains a few different kinds of microbes. Its made under controlled conditions to allow only the good bacteria to grow. Letting in bad bacteria might spoil the food and make it taste bad, or even make you sick. The reason to eat probiotics after being treated with antibiotics is simple. You recharge your digestive system with a new batch of good bacteria.

    Health Benefits And Uses

Activia® Black Cherry Probiotic Lactose Free Yogurt Reviews 2020

    1. Supports Digestive Health

One of the top benefits of probiotics is their ability to boost digestive health. Healthy bacteria that are added to yogurt help improve the microflora in the gut, which is responsible for supporting digestion and a healthy digestive tract. The yogurt probiotic content could potentially help treat certain gastrointestinal conditions, including colon cancer, IBS, constipation, diarrhea and lactose intolerance. Not only that, but many individuals who struggle with lactose intolerance find that yogurt is a soothing food rather than one that causes digestive distress.

    2. May Lower Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

A recent study published in BMC Medicinefound that eating more yogurt was associated with a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Like other probiotic foods, yogurt supports digestion and the absorption of nutrients throughout the digestive tract, which is essential for healthy blood sugar regulation. Another large review of 17 studies also found that taking probiotics benefits blood sugar control, which could help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

    3. Could Help Protect Against Colorectal Cancer

    4. Increases Bone Density

Dairy yogurts are particularly high in calcium, which helps strengthen and maintain bone mass. Many dairy yogurts are also fortified with vitamin D, which promotes calcium absorption and supports proper bone mineralization.

    5. Supports Weight Loss and Fat Loss

    6. Boosts Immunity
