Oral Vs Gut Probiotics

Hyperbiotics PRO- Dental Review | Probiotics for Oral Health

The major differences between gut probiotics and oral probiotics are the types of organisms included in each, as well as the method of delivery.

Gut probiotics contain bacterial strains native to the gut.

They are delivered in capsules designed to resist the powerful gastric juices and acidic pH of your digestive system.

Survivability is very important when it comes to gut probiotics. Thats why its important to choose a high-quality product with a large number of diverse strains and a high number of Colony Forming Units .On the other hand, oral probiotics, contain beneficial strains specific to the oral microbiome .

Dental Probiotics: Has A Better Way To Fight Bad Breath Finally Been Found

One of the most common concerns for patients in the dental chair is the battle with bad breath. It is also one of the most uncomfortable topics for patients to bring up during a dental appointment. Overall, about 25% of people suffer from malodor, and it has many social implications that affect a persons overall confidence and well-being.1,2

Patients look to their dental professionals for answers to this problem, but are we providing the best solutions? Is there a better way to solve the problem of bad breath?

There are many causes for bad breath, including lack of oral hygiene, dry mouth, and ear-nose-throat issues. Eighty-five percent of the time breath malodor arises from insufficient oral hygiene, such as periodontitis, coating of the tongue, and lack of plaque control. These conditions in the mouth favor the formation and microbial degradation of offensive smelling volatile sulfur compounds .

Methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulfide, and dimethyl sulfide are three of the most well-known VSCs, which form from gram-negative anaerobic bacteria. Hydrogen sulfide smells like rotten eggs, and methyl mercaptan smells like rotten cabbage.3 Even more strange, the smell of dimethyl sulfide is comparable to rotten seaweed.

The Major Difference Between Regular And Oral Probiotics

  • The major difference between the two probiotics is the method of delivery to the body and the types of organisms each is made with.

Regular probiotics have bacterial strains that are natively found in the gut. They are taken in a capsule form that is designed to enter your gut and resist the gastric juices and acidic pH of your stomach.

  • Oral probiotics, on the other hand, have beneficial strains that are good for the oral microbiome. These probiotics are usually delivered through chewable tablets because they are meant to sit in your mouth for as long as they completely dissolve, making sure they get enough time to clear your oral microbiome.

With that aside, lets look at the 7 surprising benefits of Oral Probiotics for oral hygiene.

How To Choose The Best Oral Probiotic

When choosing an oral probiotic supplement, look for products with a high strain count, which is measured in colony-forming units . Find a supplement with at least 3 billion CFUs.

Keep in mind, though, that oral probiotics will usually have a lower strain and CFU count than regular probiotics.

Look for a probiotic with beneficial strains, such as S. salivarius K12, S. salivarius M18, L. rhamnosus, and L. reuteri.

Oral probiotics should not be swallowed but chewed or made to melt in the mouth.

You can buy dental probiotics on Amazon or directly from manufacturers. Most oral probiotics are not available at local drugstores or grocery stores.

Benefits Of Dental Probiotics

Pro

The benefits of dental probiotics are evident in every part of the mouth because a healthy oral microbiome is the key to oral health.

Oral/dental probiotics may prevent or address most oral diseases, such as:

  • Cavities
  • Tonsillitis
  • Oral cancer
  • The good bacteria in oral probiotics can create biofilms to replace those created by undesirable bacteria. These new biofilms not only support the health of teeth and gums and reduce inflammation, but they can also block bad bacteria from reaching enamel or gum tissue to wreak havoc.

Are Dental/oral Probiotics Right For You

Using oral probiotics for dental health cannot replace oral hygiene, a healthy diet, or 6-month cleanings. However, used with other oral care strategies, dental probiotics can provide a significant benefit to your oral and overall health.

The health of your oral microbiome impacts the rest of the body in ways we are only just beginning to fully understand. Your body is a complex system of interactions, none of which are isolated from the rest of the body.

As I always say, what happens in the mouth happens in the body.

Another concern people have expressed about their oral health is mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer. This type of cancer can develop on various parts of your mouth, including your gums, lips, tongue, the inside of your cheeks, and more.

Probiotics was shown to help reduce oral cancer in rats during a 2013 study. However, more research needs to be done to truly understand the effects that probiotics play in fighting oral cancer.

Bad Breath Is A Common Problem That Can Affect Us At Any Stage In Our Lives Read Our Guide To The Causes & Ways To Help Prevent It

    RepHresh Pro B Probiotic Review

The medical term for bad breath is halitosis and it can be something that happens to us only occasionally, or on a daily basis. It’s thought that around one in four of us will suffer from regular bad breath at some point in our lives.

    Common causes of bad breath

There are many causes of bad breath. If youre not sure whats triggering yours then here are the ones to look out for first:

    Poor oral hygiene

The most common cause of bad breath is a poor oral hygiene routine in other words, not cleaning our teeth properly or regularly enough. When we eat, the bacteria naturally present in our mouths begin to multiply. If we don’t regularly remove the bacteria by cleaning, they can give off unpleasant-smelling gases that cause bad breath.

Particles of food left behind by poor brushing, or by not flossing, will also be broken down by the bacteria in our mouth and produce an unpleasant smell. Similarly, if you wear a denture or other oral appliance and its not cleaned properly, bacteria can build up on the surface creating a smell.

If you have bad breath regularly, it can be a sign that you’re developing gum disease. The gums may become red and swollen and may bleed while cleaning your teeth or when you touch them.

    Smoking

As well as affecting the way your breath smells, smoking can also irritate your gums. This irritation puts you at a higher risk of developing gum disease, which can cause bad breath as an early symptom.

What Are The Best Probiotic Strains To Take

Oral microbiome probiotic strains considered most beneficial to oral health include:

    • Lactobacillus reuteri
    • Lactobacillus paracasei
    • Lactobacillus sakei

Oral probiotics are usually given in the form of lozenges, drinks, mouth rinse, or chewable tablets.

They are meant to sit in your mouth while they dissolve, thus allowing enough time to inoculate your oral microbiome.

However, the mouth is connected to the rest of the body for instance, good gut bacteria established during birth and infancy may potentially reduce a childs risk of cavities.

    Worst Service I’ve Ever Experienced

    ByStephen C.,Ireland, Verified Reviewer

Ordered from this company for delivery to the Republic of Ireland. This was my second order with them, when after about six weeks of waiting for delivery I sent many emails to the so-called support at Pro-B Fresh. Eventually, weeks later I got a response saying my order was returned to the shipper but they told me the order has been resent. I asked many times by email why my order had been returned but got no answer, only an email saying my goods would be with me in a few days.

I kept emailing asking where my delivery was and at about twelve weeks after I’d ordered they told me my goods had been returned to the shipper , this time by customs. I asked for an immediate refund.

I’d like to warn people to be very wary of ordering from this company. At the end of the ordering process they will try to load your order and get you to pay extra postage for a speedier delivery. It’s disgusting that online companies can get away with this form of trading.

    What Are Dental Probiotics

Probiotics that are taken orally can help to support your oral health. They are a type of living organism and the supplements are generally a combination of various yeasts and bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the most common probiotic groups and there are multiple strains in each of these.

There are microorganism colonies living in your mouth and the majority of these bacteria are not bad. The ones that are classified as probiotics are actually beneficial to your dental health and help to protect you against the bad bacteria that put you at risk for gum disease and tooth decay.

When taken orally, the probiotics in the supplements are directly delivered to your mouth, allowing for easy colonization of your oral biofilms. There are some toothpastes on the market that contain probiotics. However, most dental probiotics come in the form of a chewable tablet, mouth rinse, lozenge or drink.

What Does The Research Say About Dental Probiotics

There has been a lot of research regarding dental probiotics for a wide variety of oral health concerns. Exploring the research gives you a better understanding of how much they can help.

    Cavities

Cavities occur as a result of plaque, which contains bacteria. According to the research, dental probiotics can reduce your risk of cavities in the following ways:

Enhancing your mouths immunity Changing the quality of your saliva to allow for better enamel mineralization Fighting some of the bacteria that causes cavities due to the production of antibacterial compounds Stopping cavity growth via altering the mouths pH

    Gum Disease

Both periodontitis and gingivitis can devastate your mouth and even lead to other health conditions in your body, such as heart disease. When you use dental probiotics, they can help your gum health in the following ways:

Less plaque below your gumline Reduced gingival index Smaller pocket depth to reduce your risk of periodontitis

    Oral Thrush

Oral thrush is characterized by candida fungus growing in the oral cavity in abundance. Lactobacillus, a species of probiotics, has been shown to stop this fungus from being able to encourage the growth of oral biofilm. When this is stopped, the fungus cannot flourish and result in thrush.

    Bad Breath

There have been three separate studies that look at probiotics and how they can affect your breath. They have been shown to reduce the volatile sulphur compounds that are responsible.

    Tonsillitis

    Oral Cancer

    What Are Dental/oral Probiotics

Oral probiotics are specific strains of bacteria known to support a healthy mouth and improve oral health. They encourage the growth of good bacteria and stop the growth of bad bacteria.

Like the gut, the mouth has its diverse bacterial community known as the oral microbiome. Dental probiotics are similar to gut probiotics in that they use good bacteria to improve the health of the microbiome in the mouth.

However, theyre not the same as gut probiotics oral probiotics are most effective when delivered directly to the mouth via lozenges, chewable tablets, milk, or probiotic drinks. Oral probiotics in the form of swallowable tablets do not seem to be as effective. Some kinds of toothpaste contain oral probiotics.

Oral probiotic supplements deliver these bacterial strains directly to your mouth so that they can colonize the surfaces in your mouth and form biofilms.

The use of oral probiotics may offer health benefits because of the way they boost the immune system of the mouth.

Do oral probiotics really work? Yes, oral probiotics work to improve oral health, especially for people who have existing dysbiosis in their oral microbiome.

One study concluded that dental probiotic supplements not only show promise for the prevention or treatment of oral disease but also cause little to no side effects. However, more research is needed to determine the right dosages and delivery for the best results.
