Is Your Probiotic Yogurt Organic

We are very conscious of the importance of organic farming methods and therefore source our coconuts from an older grove that was raised before the introduction of pesticides and genetically altered seeds. Although we are certain our coconuts do not contain any residue from pesticides, coconut farming does not require the use of them as coconut trees are incredibly hardy and are not easily affected by insects or fungal disturbances. Because of this most Asian coconut growers do not apply for the costly process of organic certification.

How To Make This Dairy

For this coconut yogurt, you only need three ingredients coconut milk, corn starch and a yogurt starter. Youll also need a food thermometer.

Ive tried this recipe multiple times with various probiotics and methods. Although it can, and has, worked for many people, Ive found that the best and most consistent results come from using a powder yogurt starter or a store-bought yogurt instead of the probiotics.

Use 1 teaspoon powder yogurt starter. Make sure to set aside 1 tablespoon coconut milk to mix the yogurt starter into.

-OR-

Use 2 tablespoon store-bought yogurt.

Heat up the coconut milk and cornstarch together over medium heat, till the mixture reaches 82ºC, stirring occasionally. If youre wondering why the cornstarch Ive found this is 100% needed to give you the delicious thick texture you want. I did lots of research and noticed that almost all store-bought versions have their own thickeners in. Im guessing this is because plant-based yogurts are thinner, in general, and so need a thickening boost. Just make sure to stir well so there are no lumps from the cornstarch.

Leave the milk to cool down till between 42-44ºC. Then add in the 1tbsp yogurt starter/ coconut milk combination into the heated coconut milk and mix well.

If using powder yogurt started, first mix it with 1 tablespoon cool coconut milk, then add it to the warm milk.

If using store-bought yogurt, just add it to the warm milk and stir well.

The Coconut Cult: A Probiotic Yogurt Review

Does Your Favorite Yogurt Have Enough Probiotic Bacteria?

There are lots of compelling reasons to add yogurt with no added sugar to your diet. For one, its a good source of protein to fill you up, and calcium for bone health. On the other hand, you can get protein and calcium from other dairy products. What makes yogurt unique is its a fermented dairy product, meaning it potentially contains gut-friendly probiotic bacteria.

Why is the probiotic issue so important? Theres growing evidence that gut bacteria impact the health of your digestive tract AND your immune system. After all, more than 70% of your immunity lies in your gut and the health of your gut immune system is influenced by the type of bacteria that reside there, all 100 trillion of them. Collectively, this conglomeration of bacteria weighs almost 3 pounds!

Although you can buy a probiotic supplement, theres no guarantee that it contains the number of bacteria listed on the label. When Consumer Labs, an independent testing firm, evaluated 19 probiotic supplements, 2 of them didnt contain the number of colony-forming units specified on the label. But what about yogurt? How do you know whether the yogurt youre eating contains enough active bacterial cultures to offer health benefits?

If youre choosing plain, Oikos gets the green light from us. Low sugar, high protein: thats the winning combo in any yogurt. Just steer clear of their fruit flavors: Blackberry has more sugar than actual blackberries and Pomegranate uses questionable additives potassium sorbate and calcium lactate. As Middleberg explains, These additives most likely contain synthetic pesticides. Potassium sorbate has been known to cause skin allergies like eczema and calcium lactate can lead to digestive issues. Which doesnt sound like great news if youve been searching, how to get rid of bloating.

Probiotic Bacteria From Other Sources

Homemade Probiotic Coconut Yogurt

Dont forget yogurt isnt the only natural source of gut-friendly, probiotic bacteria. Other foods that contain it good bacteria:

. Fresh sauerkraut

. Buttermilk

For most people, yogurt is one of the most convenient ways to get probiotic bacteria since it comes pre-packaged and ready to eat. The key is to make sure youre enjoying a yogurt that contains enough probiotic bacteria to be beneficial.

Other considerations when choosing a yogurt is how much sugar it contains. Its not uncommon for yogurt to contain 30 or more grams of sugar, especially flavored ones. Milk naturally contains milk sugar, called lactose, but many yogurt makers add extra sugar. Often, low-fat yogurts are the highest in sugar. Stick with unflavored yogurt and flavor it yourself with fresh fruit, extracts, or cocoa powder. In general, Greek yogurt is lower in carbs and higher in protein but also lower in calcium.

Ingredients In Coconut Yogurt

  • Coconut milk You must use full-fat coconut milk to get the thickest, creamiest, and overall best dairy free yogurt. Get the kind from a can, not the liquid coconut milk beverage from the dairy case.
  • Gelatin powder Creates a thick texture without fake stabilizers or starches. I prefer grass-fed gelatin, but conventional powders will work too. Make sure its unflavored.
  • Probiotic capsules Adds the tangy taste of traditional yogurts and creates a dairy free probiotic yogurt that supports a healthy gut. Avoid probiotics that have added prebiotics or additional enzymes, as it wont create the same results. Also, make sure your probiotic is fresh, or it wont work correctly.

Does Freezing Sauerkraut Kill Probiotics

Sauerkraut is considered to be one of the most healthy and probiotic foods in the world. It is used by people around the world for its tremendous health benefits.

Sauerkraut is a dish that is made from fermented cabbage and that is where its probiotic nature comes from. It is home to several beneficial bacteria which when ingested lead to the development of a healthy biome.

If you use sauerkraut in your daily routine, then you might be aware that it has a long shelf life and can last for up to 6 months in the refrigerator.

But if you want to further extend its shelf life you can freeze it? Does freezing sauerkraut kill probiotics?

Freezing sauerkraut will not kill the probiotics. The probiotics will enter a dormant state from the cold temperatures and will awaken when brought back to room temperature. However, the best way to freeze sauerkraut and preserve the most probiotics is by flash freezing it. Slowly freezing the sauerkraut by placing it in a freezer may damage some of the probiotics but the majority should survive.

So, if youve got extra sauerkraut that youd like to enjoy later then flash freeze it.

Just make sure you take that extra care in the freezing process for optimal results.

Why Do I Benefit From This Probiotic Yogurt

Homemade Vegan Coconut Yogurt

Our microbiome is responsible for many important functions in our body, without a healthy balance of these gastrointestinal bacteria-or our microbiome- many diseases and deficiencies arise. As we damage this fragile environment through the consumption of heavily processed foods, alcohol, and more specifically antibiotics, we must find a source of probiotics to counteract the damage we have done.

Probiotic Preservation: Why Store

What is important is the level of live active cultures in the finished product , and how well it is stored to avoid destruction of these cultures before they are able to reach your gut .

Keep in mind, most commercial yogurts are pasteurized and have probiotics added in after the fact. These may not have the same gut benefits as the cultures from the original fermentation. Check with the yogurt manufacturer to find out their processes and the live active cultures in their finished products.

Better yet, make your own yogurt at home! The definition of a natural yogurt can vary since it is not a regulated term it may simply be one made with all natural ingredients, Greek-style yogurt, yogurt made from a prior batch of yogurt, or a plain unsweetened yogurt. The best way to qualify your non-dairy yogurt as natural by any of these standards is to make it yourself. You can easily prepare a batch of yogurt with your own makeshift apparatus or by using a relatively inexpensive yogurt maker.

Why I’m In Love With Coconut Yoghurt

Coconut Yogurt Recipe ~ Raw Vegan ~ Probiotic

In my last post you heard me say why I’m nuts about coconuts. This amazing superfood has gained popularity in the last few years. However, as you’ll have read in my last post, my love of coconut has a long history – way before it was fashionable. With my studies in Nutritional Medicine this was accentuated ten fold as I discovered the amazing health benefits coconut posesses.

Dairy on the other hand, has been a love of a different kind. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t live without yoghurt. However Dairy just doesn’t love me back, yoghurt may be a source of probiotics but for me it was not a viable option.

Imagine my absolute euphoria when I discovered Coconut yoghurt? A dairy free, lactose free, vegan friendly yoghurt with the healing benefits of coconut milk – could it be true? Could it be possible?

My first experience with coconut yoghurt was the highly popular Co-Yo. I have to say I was a little disappointed, while it was thick and creamy, it lacked the sourness and the light and fluffy texture. Quite honestly it simply tasted like a thick and heavy coconut cream – which is fine but not quite what I was looking for as a yoghurt substitute.

Next I discovered Alpine. This got me excited as it was available in my local supermarket and the nutritional profile suits my philosophy well – high fat, low sugar, no nasty ingredients and minimal processing.

Here’s why I’m in love with coconut yoghurt:

  • It is rich in dairy free probiotics to enhance our immune system,

What To Look For When Buying Yogurt

If youâre eating yogurt mainly for the probiotic benefits, make sure to look for The National Yogurt Associationâs Live & Active Cultures seal on packaging: It means that when manufactured, the yogurt contained at least 100 million active starter cultures per gram. Most yogurt brands in the United States contain probiotics, but the organisms must be added after heat processing, so check the label to be sure. If it states âlive and active cultures,â then the yogurt has probiotics.

Other important factors to consider are the amount of protein and sugar included. When it comes to protein, aim for a minimum of six grams of protein in non-dairy yogurt alternatives and at least 10 grams in regular dairy yogurt. More or less is okay but yogurt can be a great source of protein so itâs helpful to pack it in when you can. Also be sure to read the nutrition facts panels for sugar content. Many of the flavored types can get out of hand when it comes to sugar cane, juices, and high-fructose corn syrup additions. There are many delicious yogurt options on the market with 15 grams of sugar or less.

Why Make Your Own Coconut Yogurt

First of all, I LOVE coconut yogurt. Out of all the plant-based yogurts I tried, coconut yogurt is the one I like the best. But, for me, finding coconut yogurt is a major task. I have to go out of my way for it, visit specific stores that may or may not stock it.

Yogurt is also healthy, with probiotics cultures, but store-bought often contains additives or sugar, or it just doesnt taste how I would like it. So I mostly wasnt even eating yogurt .

When you make your own, you can be sure of the ingredients you use, and only use a sweetener if you want to.

Plus, homemade coconut yogurt is simply DELICIOUS!

To make your own coconut yogurt youll need strong probiotics and coconut milk. I checked the brand I use and it contains guar gum as a thickener, so you may need to adjust for it.

Does Blending Yogurt Kill The Bacteria

Nope, the beneficial bacteria wont be killed by just blending the yogurt to make smoothie. Remember some of the blender bottom is metallic and some of those bacteria is very very sensitive to metallic things. Thats why by putting the yogurt last we can minimize killing or affect the good bacteria for our drink.

Probiotics Can Help Boost Your Immune System

How to make probiotic yogurt at home

Probiotics could very well help boost the immune system and also help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria.

One way that probiotics can help your immune system is by allowing healthy bacteria to literally crowd out the unhealthy ones. The healthy probiotics consume the organic material and do not allow pathogens to take hold.

Another way that probiotics help boost the immune system is by giving your bodys natural germ killers the ability to practice on actually malicious germs. Its pretty fascinating!
