Can Probiotics Cure Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux Is More Dangerous Than Smoking

Can probiotics help with acid reflux?

the researchers concluded.

Millions of people die every year because they dont take their heartburn seriously enough.

And there I was, ready to be another name on a grave.

It wasnt my fault, really!

Ill explain in a second how I finally got rid of my acid reflux using a simple home remedy that takes only four or five minutes to make.

You most likely have all the ingredients sitting in your kitchen. So, if you want, you should be able to take the first sip within 10 minutes from NOW.

What Are Ppi Drugs Side Effects

Using prescription medications for heartburn isnt benign. They have common and some serious long-term side effects.

PPI drug side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Timoprazole
  • Vonoprazan

Discuss short term and long term use of these medications with your doctor as they can bring with other long term health issues.

I will describe some nutritional issues that can due to PPIs that occur below.

Types Of Probiotic Strains That Help Acid Reflux

To summarize, the probiotic strains that help with GERD are:

  • Lactobacillus gasseri-may help to eliminate dyspepsia and reflux symptoms as well as reduce abdominal fat and waist circumference.
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum-may decrease abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation.
  • Lactobacillus reuteri-may reduced colic, reduce vomiting, increase bowel movement frequency. Also decreased abdominal pain, distention, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG-decreased abdominal pain, distention, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Bifidobacterium lactis HN019-Increased stomach emptying and speeds up transit time, 8 of 9 belly symptoms improved.
  • Saccharomyces boulardii-along with L. reuteri may help reduce colic, vomiting, and alleviate constipation.
  • Bacillus subtilis-may decrease SIBO and many GI symptoms
  • E. faecium-could be helpful for many aspects of GI health. Not currently available commercially.

The strains of bacteria are important as you can see. While common probiotic strains like lactobacillus acidophilus may be good for overall digestive function, targeted probiotic strains may be more effective for GERD and heartburn.

Diagnostic Method Of The Glucose Hydrogen Breath Test

For measuring hydrogen concentrations in breath, the authors used LactoFAN device . Before the test, children were asked to brush their teeth and rinse the mouth with antiseptic mouth wash and tap water, to eliminate an early hydrogen peak due to action of oral bacteria on glucose substrate. After an overnight fast, 1 g/kg with a maximum of 50 g glucose, dissolved in 200 mL of water was orally administered to each tested child, according to the manufacturers recommendations. An end-expiratory breath sample was collected immediately before and at every 20 minutes for the next 120 minutes after substrate intake. If the basal value of breath hydrogen was more than 16 ppm, it was considered a high value. The glucose was not administered in such situations and the test was rescheduled to be repeated with proper preparation. An increase in breath hydrogen in 2 consecutive measurements of at least 15 ppm above the basal value was considered indicative for SIBO, according to the manufacturers recommendations.

Consequences Of B12 Deficiency

Probiotics for Heartburn Relief

Whats the big deal about plummeting your B12 absorption due to PPIs?

Vitamin B12 is necessary to make red healthy red blood cell cells and nerve cells. Low B12 can cause PERMANENT nerve damage, memory loss, and mood disorders.

B12 deficiency is now extremely common, and no doubt that heartburn drugs are contributing to these issues.

Deficiency of B12 also interferes with energy production and liberation of energy from food.

Even the most skeptical nutrition critic probably doesnt want low energy. Im pretty confident of this.

It would be all still manageable if it was just B12 deficiency. However, there are some other consequences of blocking acid.

Thats Except When I Failed Scott

What do I mean by failing Scott?

You know what happens when we get a good thing going. We too quickly forget the hard times.

And, little by little, I began to forget taking the remedy.

I would run out of the ingredients or forget to take it with me when traveling.

Or, most idiotic of it all: Sometimes, I thought I didnt have five minutes to spare to make it.

Imagine having a remedy that you know would eliminate your acid reflux every time, and you just decide in your mind that its not worth five minutes to make it.

Well, my brain is obviously not the brightest.

And that was okay for a few days

until one night, when the reflux assaulted me with full force again.

As luck would have it it was exactly a night spent in a hotel, where I had none of the ingredients needed.

Worst night of my life!

Most of it was spent with my head in the toilet.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions for someone who had their gallbladder removed and has a hiatal hernia? I am over weight and suffer from what feels like a tight band around my chest and back and burning in my upper abdomen. The doctors want to put me on antacids but they dont help.

  • Can I give Primal Probiotics to my 3 month old son ? He has reflux issues and eczema. Exclusively breastfed and I have changed my diet and taken all allergens out. Just waiting for it to clear out of my milk and his system. He had to be on an antibiotic for his eczema because of an infection and I know he needs a probiotic ! What do you suggest for a baby ? Thank you. I am desperate to know the best thing to give him.

  • Laura Nelsonsays:

for me and my baby shortly after she was born. It helped her a lot. I sprinkled some on my nipple just before nursing her, but Im sure mixing a small amount in with some breastmilk would be fine too. Just a tiny bit made a big difference. Be sure to take it yourself, because your baby will get it from you too. Good luck!

  • What Types Of Probiotics Help Acid Reflux

    Use Probiotics for Acid Reflux

Probiotics that contain strains from lactobacilli and bifidobacteria may be helpful with acid reflux and associated issues.

Probiotics of high quality can offer various benefits to the microbiome, including relief from GERD, aiding in digestion, optimizing bowel movements, supporting immune function, and weight loss. Probiotics may also be helpful with GI symptoms like irritable bowel syndrome , diarrhea, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth .

Probiotic supplements are not regulated by the FDA in the same way that pharmaceutical drugs are. This means there is not a standard of quality that probiotics are required to meet during manufacture. When seeking relief from gastrointestinal abnormalities such as GERD, it is recommended to purchase probiotics that research has proven effective. Omni-biotic probiotics have been researched and have been shown to improve gastrointestinal symptoms by the user.

In studies, specific probiotic strains from the genus Lactobacilli have decreased gastric acid production in an animal model and increased pepsinogen . PGI may help improve digestion and decrease gastric residence time. Bifidobacterium adhered to stomach cells and prompted mucin production, improving the gastric barrier to acidic stomach content.

These bacteria strains may be more effective than other stains due to limited evidence between probiotic strains. The limited evidence is related to small quantities of available trials.

Dairy Substitutes For Acid Reflux Relief

If you think dairy is contributing to your acid reflux, elimination is your first step. Over time, you may find that you have less desire for dairy products in general. You can also try a dairy substitute. These days, you can find an alternative for most dairy products on the market.

While many of these substitutes are often very processed, with a long list of ingredients, theyre usually made from nuts or other plant material and may provide the additional benefits of fiber, plant fats, and less animal fats.

You can find alternatives for most dairy products at natural food stores or in the health food section of many grocery stores. Be sure to check the labels carefully. Most substitutes are made from a base of:

    • soy

Most dairy substitutes, especially plain milks, can be used in a 1:1 ratio when cooking. Unsweetened versions tend to be the most neutral for flavor. For other dairy products, learning the ropes just takes a little trial and error.

Here are some common dairy ingredients and how to create them from nondairy alternatives.

    • Buttermilk. Add one tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of soy milk or another alternative.
    • Ricotta. Crumble and season firm tofu.
    • Evaporated milk. Simmer nondairy milk on the stove until its reduced by 60 percent.
    • Sweetened condensed milk. Mix one cup evaporated nondairy milk with 1 1/4 cups sugar.
    • Heavy cream. Use full-fat coconut milk in a 1:1 ratio.
    • Parmesan cheese. Use nutritional yeast as a 1:1 replacement.

Could Probiotics Help With Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a common western health issue. Drinking antacid out of the bottle isn’t an entirely unusual sight! This can indeed give temporary relief but doesn’t always solve the cause of this problem. So what can help with acid reflux? Probiotics seem to be becoming a popular approach in the fight against acid reflux. But why would probiotics help with this problem, known otherwise as heartburn?

    Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth

In his book Fast Tract Digestion, Norman Robillard, Ph.D., makes a case that small intestine bacterial overgrowth may be the real cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease .

SIBO is a health condition in which there are too many bacteria in the upper part of the small intestine, a place where these microorganisms really shouldnt be. GERD is a disease in which stomach acid burns the lining of the esophagus , causing the symptoms of heartburn.

How might these two be connected? Dr. Robillards theory is that the gas produced by the bacteria residing in the small intestine puts enough pressure on the small intestine and stomach that it can push the acid from the stomach into the esophagus.

In addition to identifying a new way to look at thecause of GERD, Dr. Robillard also offers a new look at treatment. He does not endorse the use of acid-reducing medications, particularly the use of proton pump inhibitors , which is currently the standard treatment for GERD.

His theory is that the reduced stomach acid resulting from PPIs contributes to the bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine in the first place, as stomach acid serves a preventative role in terms of keeping bacteria from populating the small intestine.

Kombucha Probiotics And Benefits For Acid Reflux Gerd And Heartburn

    How to Choose a Probiotic
The probiotics in kombucha help in restoring a natural balance in the gut bio, which plays a role in protecting the stomach lining and even preventing regurgitation. Its important to note that these are only preventative effects, not curative effects.

Other Drinks That Are Good for Acid Reflux, Heartburn, and GERD

    1. Ginger Tea
Ginger tea has a natural soothing effect on the stomach, which helps in reducing the production of stomach acid, thus cutting back on the occurrence of heartburn, acid reflux, and to some extent GERD. If the drink is too spicy for your preference, you can sweeten it with a little honey. Avoid ginger ale as it is carbonated, which can worsen the situation.
    2. Yogurt
Yogurt thats not too sour does contain live probiotics, which help in restoring the gut bio balance, thus preventing acid reflux.
    3. Low Fat Milk
Low-fat milk can relieve heartburn and is also a rich source of calcium. However, full-fat dairy contains fat molecules which only serve to worsen the heartburns.

    Classification Of The Subjects

GERD in children was diagnosed based on the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition guidelines, that is mainly based on history and physical examination. Routine laboratory investigations were performed in all cases and only selected cases were referred to upper digestive endoscopy and/or combined esophageal pH and impedance monitoring. One hundred and twenty-eight children with GERD who received PPI for 12 weeks were consecutively randomized by a hospital based intranet computer system into 2 groups: placebo group and probiotics group . L. reuteri DSM 17938 was administered to the probiotics group. The probiotics group received 5 mL bottles with odorless and tasteless oral solution. The recommended dose was 5 drops once per day containing 0.1 × 109 CFU. In the placebo group, the children received water bottled in 5 mL vials with a plastic dropper. The recommended dose was the same: 5 drops once per day. The PPI treatment in children with GERD consisted of esomeprazole 1 mg/kg daily, once per day for 12 weeks. GHBT was performed using LactoFAN analyzer before treatment and after 12 weeks of treatment for every child included into the placebo and probiotics group, and only once at enrollment for controls.

Probiotics Should Be Your First Call

Its important to determine the root cause of your reflux problem to address this cause. This may involve testing, as well as being aware of the types of foods that trigger your reflux symptoms.

Depending on the nature of your digestive symptoms, probiotics are an important way to help restore normal digestive function and alleviate your acid reflux.

If you are already taking an antacid, its a good idea to take a probiotic supplement alongside it to maintain your gut health and reduce the risk of destroying healthy gut bacteria.

Over time, as the probiotics work to rebalance your gut, you may find that you no longer need the antacids or PPI.

Here are a few key benefits of our probiotic:

    • Time-release tablets that deliver 15 times more bacteria past stomach acid, when compared to regular probiotic capsules.
    • Probiotic bacteria are released slowly over 8-10 hours.

    Do Probiotics Help Gerd

Often, medications called proton pump inhibitors are prescribed for GERD. According to a July 2019 review in Nutrients, PPIs can decrease diversity in your gut, meaning they reduce the “good” bacteria in there. And this kind of change in gut diversity could have a negative affect on your health, according to a March 2020 paper in Microorganisms.

This means you may need to get more probiotics in your life not to treat your GERD, but to keep you healthy while you manage your symptoms.

There isn’t a lot of research around GERD and probiotics, says Elena Ivanina, DO, MPH, director of neurogastroenterology and motility at Lenox Hill Hospital. But she does point to one May 2019 study of 130 people in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, which found that esomeprazole taken with probiotics specifically, Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecium was successful in helping improve the gastrointestinal symptoms of those with GERD and extending the time between relapses of symptoms.

Natural Treatment For Acid Reflux – Diet, Probiotics & HCl

As gastroesophageal reflux disease soars globally, alternatives to traditional therapies are welcomed. An excellent review described below looked at the ability of probiotics to alleviate symptoms in GERD.

    GERD, a little background

Gastroesophageal reflux disease commonly known as GERD affects an estimated one billion people worldwide with large variations between regions and countries.

The World Gastroenterology Organization defines GERD as troublesome symptoms sufficient to impair an individuals quality of life, or injury or complications that result from the retrograde flow of gastric contents into the esophagus, oropharynx, and/or respiratory tract.

In addition to these undesirable health effects, GERD levies both a heavy economic and societal toll.

Though some of those suffering from GERD may blame pepperoni pizza, the pathogenesis is more complex including but not limited to motor dysfunction, hiatal hernia, and impaired mucosal resistance.

    Treating GERD

First line treatment usually begins with diet and lifestyle changes:

Eat smaller meals, slowly and at least two hours before sleep lose weight if needed avoid nicotine and alcohol avoid possible triggers including peppermint, chocolate, caffeine, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and high fat foods.

Medications are frequently recommended. Antacids and H2 blockers are used to deplete acids. Proton pump inhibitors block certain acidifying protons and may also heal damaged stomach lining.
