Which Probiotics Are Best For Acne

How To Take Oral Probiotics

Probiotics | How I Cleared Up My Acne | Holistic Nutritionist Tips

Everyones gut microbiome requires a unique diet, but the best way to balance your gut flora is by incorporating foods that are naturally rich in probiotics, such as:

  • Yogurt
  • Apples
  • Flaxseed

Try to consume these foods every day, as most probiotics tend to pass through the digestive system quite quickly.

If eating foods rich in probiotics and prebiotics is impractical for you then consider choosing a good quality probiotic supplement, and when doing so be cognizant that the diversity of strains and their delivery mechanisms are both important factors to consider.

While theres little consensus on when the best time is to consume probiotic supplements, some experts suggest that if youre regularly eating prebiotics and have an adequate supply of them in your gut, then supplements are best taken on an empty stomach, when acid levels are lower. Of the billions of probiotics that enter your system, the vast majority will immediately die upon contact with your stomach acid.

Others say that whenever taking a live strain probiotic supplement, the ideal time to take it is 20 minutes after eating, right away in the morning when you get up, or immediately before going to bed for the night. The theory goes that with the right timing, more probiotics will survive your stomach acid and make their way into the large intestine and colon, where they will be most beneficial.

Probiotics Hold Promise For 4 Skin Conditions

24 June 14

Maintaining a balance between good and bad bacteria in the body has benefits beyond the digestive tract, it may also affect the health and appearance of the skin, researchers have found.

Consuming probiotics, or the “good bacteria,” similar to the trillions of microorganisms that already live in the body, in foods or as dietary supplements, might help to prevent or treat certain skin conditions, some early studies suggest.

The benefit of probiotics is that they introduce healthy bacteria to the gut and create a barrier to reduce inflammation, which can trigger certain skin conditions, said Dr. Whitney Bowe, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, who has researched the effect of probiotics on acne. She said there is compelling evidence that probiotics hold promise for treating acne and rosacea.

Another exciting area of research is the development of topical probiotics, which can be applied directly to the skin, Bowe said. Several manufacturers are currently experimenting with adding strains or extracts of probiotics to their skin care products, including moisturizers, cleansers, peels and lotions, and some products are already on the market.

Still, further study is needed to determine which strains may work best and how many of the bacteria survive once the probiotics are spread onto the skin’s surface.

How To Get Rid Of Acne Scars Does Vitamin C Help Acne Scars

Vitamin C is the best acne scar treatment. This is due to the fact that it is a potent antioxidant which means it can fight off free radicals and environmental aggressors. Both free radicals and aggressors worsen the effects of hyperpigmentation and acne scars.

Vitamin C is great as a protector from the sun and air pollution. It also helps ensure that no further damage or scarring comes from the environment. It works as a healer and a protector. Additionally, it has healing benefits as an acne scar treatment as it promotes an increase in collagen production. Collagen is the protein responsible for the skins structure and therefore it can accelerate acne wound/scar healing, especially in a topical form.

Another acne scar treatment that works to increase collagen production, similar to vitamin C, is retinol. Much like vitamin C, it promotes an increase in collagen production. This improves the overall tone and texture of the skin thus making it a great option for those looking to heal acne scars and discolouration.

How Can Gut Health Affect Your Skin And Why

A healthy gut is largely influenced by the health of the collection of microbes that live in our gut, known as the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome not only affects gut health locally but also has far-reaching effects around the body. It has been implicated in many common skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and acne2. To learn more about how probiotics can help with eczema, health professionals can read this article on the Probiotic Professionals site: Probiotics for Eczema.

The gut can influence skin health through what is referred to as the gut-skin axis3. As 70% of our immune cells are found in the gut, our gut microbes can affect the function of immune cells. Ideally this results in an increase in the production of anti-inflammatory messengers and a reduction of the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. However, dysbiosis, an imbalance between friendly and more harmful bacteria in the gut, is frequently present in acne4 and can have negative effects on our immune responses. Thousands Of Bacterium Species Live On The Skin And They Counterbalance Each Other And Co

The traditional acne therapy employes 2 key strategies: first, the decontamination of the skin and extermination of Propionibacterium acnes. Poor little buddies are cleansed away from the skin with antiseptics, such as benzoyl peroxide and various acids, mostly salicylic acid. This would of course cause death and destruction on massive scale of all other, friendly or neutral civilian bacteria, and the improvement was usually short-lived and followed by a new flare of acne. The second acne treatment strategy is fairly recent: the use of retinol and its derivatives helps control the activity of 5-alpha-reductase, eventually decreasing the sebum production. Less sebum produced means worsening of Propionibacterium acnes living conditions, so acne-inducing processes slow down and inflammation eases. However, retinoids irritate the skin and significantly reduce its barrier functions, while their anti-acne effect is not necessarily permanent.

The newest strategy is based on the restoration of the skins micro-community, or the ecoflora as microbiologists put it. The beneficial bacteria take control over acne bacterias hysterical multiplication, drive away harmful bacteria species, and produce anti-inflammatory agents, effectively suppressing not only the overzealous 5-alpha-reductase, but inflammatory enzymes as well. The skins ecoflora is restored by more or less the same solutions that people now use to rebalance their gut bacteria: prebiotics and probiotics.

Probiotics For Acne & Skin Health

Gut health and skin health have been linked as far back as the early 20th century1. This article will look at current understanding behind this link, especially the link between gut health and acne, and the role probiotics can play in this relationship.

Teenagers are not the only age group affected by pesky, painful spots and breakouts – acne is a common complaint amongst adults too. In this article we answer your questions about the link between gut health and skin health, and how probiotics might help:

Can Probiotics Cause Acne

Far more often than not, a probiotic routine will help curb breakouts rather than be the cause of them. However, a minority of people may experience acne flare-ups once they first start taking probiotics. There are a couple of reasons why this happens.

One scenario is that the probiotic supplement being ingested contains the wrong combination of microorganisms to properly balance any one patients specific gut flora, throwing their system off-kilter and resulting in one or more pimples. Remember, theres an enormous array of beneficial bacteria in the human gut, so no one probiotic supplement works exactly the same way for everyone. Human microbiomes are remarkably individual, there are millions of them in our systems and they all interact in specific ways in each persons body. That said, some probiotics, such as Lactobacillus and those listed earlier, have been shown to have a broad range of benefits for just about everyone.

This is the least likely reason for a probiotic related breakout, but the solution is to either start getting your probiotics directly from food sources, or switch to a different probiotic supplement.

The more common reason why some people experience acne flare-ups once they start regulating their intake of probiotics is actually a good sign, one that suggests the probiotics are doing their job.

Combination Of Different Strains

While choosing a probiotic supplement for certain issue, make sure the strains it contains are beneficial in terms of treating that particular issue. When it comes to acne lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium longum, streptococcus salivarius, and enterococcus faecalis are some of the strains that are beneficial.

Antibiotics Make ACNE WORSE! (Probiotic tips)

If youve ever had a breakout, youve likely tried to dry those suckers up with bacteria-killing washes and spot treatments. You know, because conventional wisdom has shown that zits, particularly the big painful cysts, are often caused by P. acnes bacteria getting into your pores and going to town.

But now bacteria is trying to spin a comeback kid PR campaign, thanks to the rise of probiotics in everything yoghurts, supplements and now skincare products.

But for those of us who have acne, naturally youd wonder: Wouldnt those probiotics just make my skin worse? Luckily, Dr Whitney Bowe, NYC celebrity dermatologist and author of The Beauty of Dirty Skin, is here to lay it all out for you .

First of all, what are probiotics?

While you might automatically associate the word bacteria with things like food poisoning and Petri dishes, not all bacteria is bad for you. Enter probiotics, which are live, friendly bacteria that benefit your overall health and your skin. They help you digest food, combat against environmental damage and strengthen the immune system, Dr Bowe says.

Your body naturally contains tons of bacteria to help it function properly, says Dr Bowe. This is called the microbiome. There are more than one trillion bacteria in the skin, originating from approximately 1 000 different species, says Dr Bowe.

Probiotics For Oral Health Mouth Melt Innovation

Industry had also started investing research efforts in probiotic blends for oral microbiome health.

South Korean firm Bifido INC, for example, was conducting further human clinical trials on its tablet melt that contained proprietary probiotic strains and had been designed to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. Chief technical officer of Bifido INC recently told sister site NutraIngredients-Asia that industry was in the microbiome era and that everyone was looking to develop products related to the microbiome. The company already offered a range of other probiotic-based supplements, including some targeting atopic dermatitis eczema and gut health in babies.

Gallinée also recently launched an oral microbiome supplement made using a blend of pre- and probiotics in the form of a dissolvable tablet designed to diffuse in the mouth over 15-20 minutes.

Drago said the tablet was a category all by itself and offered a very innovative alternative to traditional oral care products on the market today.
