Essential Tips To Consider When Choosing The Best Probiotic For You

When choosing a new product its always important to consider the primary benefits you expect to gain so you can determine which company will provide you with the best value for your dollars. When it comes to health products, its especially important that you research and explore your options so you invest in the best product for you. Investing in your health is always money well spent. Here is an essential list you need to consider before choosing the best probiotic to meet your needs.

Visbiome is a high potency probiotic, and the subject of more than 75 clinical trials. It’s comprised by a propietary blend of 8 bacterial strains, that work as a team to perform what a single strain or other combinations may not do. Visbiome is stored and shiped cold, with icepacks and a temperature card that will let you know if Visbiome has been exposed to heat during transit.

Choose The Right Types

Scientists give bacteria three names: genus, species, and strain. You’ll see something like “Bifidobacterium longum W11,” where bifidobacterium is the genus, longum is the species, and W11 is the strain.

You can think of it like a first, middle, and last name. You need all three to get it right. This matters because when scientists research how well probiotics work for a health condition, they use very specific types.

When you’re choosing a probiotic, make sure all three names are the ones you’re looking for. Just the same genus and species won’t do. That’d be like settling for some random actor named James Earl Cooper when you really wanted to watch a movie with James Earl Jones.

Probiotics For Brain Health

The gut plays a major role in your mood â so much so that it’s referred to as your “second brain.” The gut and your brain communicate with each other â that means psychological interventions may help with gut-related problems, per Johns Hopkins Medicine.

And the reverse may be true as well: One small study found that taking probiotics is linked to easing negative thoughts due to a sad mood, per August 2015 research in âBrain, Behavior, and Immunityâ. And probiotics are linked to helping with symptoms of psychological conditions , per an October 2016 review in the âJournal of Neurogastroenterology and Motilityâ that looked at both animal and human studies.

Taking âLactobacillus acidophilusâ, âLactobacillus caseiâ and âBifidobacterium bifidumâ were observed to ease depression symptoms in people with major depressive disorder in a small March 2016 study in âNutritionââ.â More research is needed to understand this gut-brain relationship.

Best probiotics for PCOS

Bryan Joseph: I guess from there if those are the most common ones, are there any probiotics that would be specific for a condition? If I was somebody that had Crohns or ulcerative colitis or I had You mentioned diarrhea, but if I had a condition, are theyre a match to certain probiotics or is it a lot more complex than that?

Olivia Joseph: Youre talking about Crohns and colitis, it is a big deal. Were not talking about IBS, were talking about IBD, which increases your risk for colon cancer, increases the risk of you going on some significant drugs that have significant side effects like biologics. Youre talking autoimmune disease, a category like that, Im not just going to put someone on probiotics. Im doing a stool test.

I have seen IBS respond beautifully by dietary change, food sensitivity testing and high dose lactobacillus bifidobacterium. So we actually use a probiotic specific to people with IBS or IB, inflammatory or irritable bowel, whether its syndrome or disease, it doesnt matter. So what are those? Theyre high dose lactobacillus, bifidobacterium if you have an IBS. Those two probiotics that I just mentioned, lactobacillus, bifidobacterium, theyre great for bloating and gas, great for it.

Five Questions To Ask When Choosing A Probiotic Supplement

There are so many probiotic supplements on the market that it can be difficult to choose between them. This probiotics buyers guide will help you to find a good brand that will improve your gut health and help you to beat Candida.

There are five questions to ask when you buy a probiotic supplement. Lets take a look!

I Recommend Seeds Daily Synbiotic

Now that we know what to look for in a probiotic and what to avoid, lets talk about a good option that not only meets but exceeds all of the above criteria.

Meet SEED.

SEED is a probiotic company informed by a Scientific Advisory Board comprised of scientists, researchers, doctors and authors across the fields of microbiology, immunology, genetics, metabolomics, gastroenterology, pediatrics, molecular biology and transcriptomicsincluding primary investigators from the NIHs Human Microbiome Project. You can check out everyone involved here.

Seed developed what they call their Daily Synbiotic, a combination of 24 probiotic strains with a non-fermenting prebiotic compound sourced from Indian pomegranate.

Hold upWhat? Did you just say prebiotic? Non-fermenting? Compound? Im already lost.

Okay so here it is, big picture. Probiotics are live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host . This is the kind of bacteria that improves gut health within your body, which in turn may lead to improved overall wellness.

A prebiotic, on the other hand, is often referred to as the food that feeds the bacteria. But we know that this is only part of the story. Certain non-fermenting prebiotics are biotransformed by gut microbes into important compounds that support key aspects of your health.

Should Healthy People Take Probiotics

You may have heard that all people should take a probiotic supplement. However, research suggests that generally healthy people do not attain a benefit from probiotic supplements. A few specific supplements are clinically recommended for a few specific medical conditions, but you can otherwise obtain the most benefits from nourishing the microbes already in your gut, says Finkel.

She uses the analogy of a garden. Imagine you have a beautiful garden with a wide variety of plants that are not getting enough water and sunlight. Rather than uprooting and replacing every plant in your garden, why not take better care of the garden you have? Finkel recommends “nourishing the garden” of your microbiome by eating fiber-rich foods that will feed your microbiome, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Make Sure They’re Safe For You

For most people in good health, experts say probiotics won’t cause any issues. If you do get side effects, they’re usually very mild, like a little more gas than usual.

But use caution if you have a serious health condition or your immune system — your body’s defense against germs — is weak. In those cases, it’s best to check with your doctor first to see if they’re safe.

Also talk to your doctor before giving probiotics to your infant, especially if they’re sick.

Studies show some promising results with L. casei for digestive support and regulating diarrhea. One study on the effect of milk fermented by L. Casei strain DN-114 found that supplementation significantly reduced the incidence of diarrhea .

L. casei also made headlines when a study found it beneficial in relieving anxiety. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study found supplementation with 24 billion units of the L. casei strain Shirota led to a rise in probiotics lactobacillus and bifidobacterium, as well as a significant decrease in symptoms of anxiety and depression .

Now lets take a look at a separate class of probiotics, bifidobacterium.

What Should I Look For In A Probiotic

Try not to be swayed by packaging or commercials. Before you decide what is the best probiotic for you, we recommend considering three factors:

  • Strain: The individual bacteria strain determines the health benefits you should expect from the probiotic.
  • Proof: Any claims about health benefits should be backed up by scientific studies on that product and the probiotic strain in it.
  • Transparency: The packaging should provide you with clear information about the number of live microorganisms in each serving, the strains or specific strain in the product, the suggested daily serving size, the expiration date, any storage instructions, and corporate contact information in case you have any issues or questions. If you donât see this information readily available, try to look for a product which does provide it.

Gut Dysbiosis Is When This Balance Is Lost

A robust gut microbiome is in perfect harmony. When this stability is upset by stress, antibiotics, alcohol, or by your diet, then gut dysbiosis can occur.

Overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans is one form of gut dysbiosis. It can cause a huge range of symptoms including digestive problems, fatigue, food cravings, recurring yeast infections, skin problems, and more.

For this reason, it is imperative to keep the gut biome as balanced as you can. Probiotics are one way that you can help your intestines to overcome dysbiosis.

Genus Species And Strain

Along with an alphanumeric, bacteria are identified by their genus, species and strain, per the World Gastroenterology Organisation Global Guidelines.

Within each genus, there are many species and strains, per the California Dairy Research Foundation. These are presented in order from the broadest category to the most specific. So, for âLactobacillus rhamnosusâ GG, the genus is âLactobacillusâ, the species is ârhamnosusâ and the strain is âGGâ, per the California Dairy Research Foundation.

Here are some of the most common genera found in probiotic supplements, per the NIH:

  • âLactobacillusâ: This may help with diarrhea, as well as allergies, stomach pain and constipation, per the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • âBifidobacteriumâ: This good bacteria may help with constipation and airway infections, per NLM.
  • âSaccharomycesâ: This yeast may be effective against diarrhea and stomach pain, per a December 2020 report from ConsumerLab.
  • âStreptococcusâ: This is effective with some forms of diarrhea, per ConsumerLab.
  • âBacillusâ: This helps with abdominal pain, bloating and constipation, per ConsumerLab.

“The most important thing to look for is the right species of bacteria tailored to your specific health needs,” Poe Mathes says.

Question #: How Many Different Strains Of Bacteria Are Included

Your gut microbiome can consist of 1000 different species of bacteria. So, when you pick a probiotic, it makes sense to opt for one that has a variety of strains. Your gut microbiome works as a team, with the different strains of bacteria having different talents. You should try to replicate this as far as possible with the probiotic that you choose.

Research which strains would be the most advantageous to you personally and then select the probiotic that has the greatest proportion of these different species. The different strains will act in harmony to heal you.

Look for a probiotic that has at least 5 strains of bacteria, and preferably many more.

Even Bad Bacteria Is Good For Us

How to Choose the Right Probiotic for You

Bryan Joseph: All right. But what Im understanding is theres a lot of value with having the right kind of bacteria in your body. And a lot of decisions that we make, or even pills that we take, or antibiotics that we go on will kill the right bacteria and then we have a problem in our gut.

Olivia Joseph: Yeah. So even bad bugs are good for us, because by having bad bugs and bad bacteria in our gut, it allows our immune system to adapt to it. So when we do get exposed to bad bugs, we know what to do with them. So the whole thing with a probiotic is taking antibiotics, having a diet that does not allow probiotics to thrive in your gut, eating foods that are sprayed with pesticides and herbicides, eating foods that have been treated with antibiotics. Those affect gut flora.

Diet used to be very, very different 20, 30, 40 years ago. People used to eat a lot more fermented foods, a lot of foods that are considered weird now, although fermented foods are becoming more popular, paleo has become more popular. So some good things are coming back. But theres a lot of ways to lose your good bacteria. So the most important thing is, is that theres a balance between the good and the bad. Thats what were looking for.
