Signs Your Dog Has A Yeast Infection

Will A Probiotic Cure My Yeast Infection? | Ask Eric Bakker

If your dog has a yeast infection, there will be a smell. Its a pungent overwhelming odor that can hit you like a ton of bricks if the yeast is really severe. After a time, you may get used to it, but others who are not always around him will be sure to notice it.

Youll also notice some of the following signs:

  • Chewing or licking the feet
  • Rusty red hair between the toes
  • Black skin
  • Greasy hair
  • Bacterial infections

How Do These Probiotics Help

Probiotics are packed full of healthy bacteria that not only help your GI tract, but also your vagina. Studies have shown that when taken, probiotics will improve symptoms for those who already have a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.

Probiotics are also able to prevent a potential infection. These bacteria work to balance out the pH level of the vagina, which makes for a healthy and hospitable environment.

Common Causes of Yeast Infection in Dogs’ Ears.

Ordinarily, Malassezia is a completely normal part of your dog skin.

In most cases, yeast infections tend to occur in Dogs that have had their immune systems compromised in one way or another.

Ear yeast infections are very common in dogs, especially those with floppy ears. This type of infection differs from a bacterial infection but still causes ear discomfort. If your pooch is rubbing his ear or tilting his head, he may have an ear infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast.

A bacterial infection is also possible and can cause the same symptoms.

So it’s important for your vet to establish what kind of infection your dog has.

Candida And Probiotics: Inhibiting Candida Overgrowth

A main way in which Candida is kept in check is by our beneficial gut bacteria. As long as we have enough diversity and number of good bacteria in our gut, Candida Albicans doesnt have much room to grow.

The trouble starts if our good bacteria are diminished and their natural balance is interrupted. This can be due to external factors such as an overly processed diet, chemicals and food additives, medications such as antibiotics, as well as stress. A high-quality probiotic supplement can help restore the healthy balance of gut bacteria.

In addition, specific probiotic strains have the ability to fight Candida Albicans by producing lactic acid and other antifungal compounds. The lactobacilli strain, for example, produces lactic acid, which lowers the pH in the large intestine, and makes the environment less enjoyable for Candida.

Candida often originates in the gut, even if the Candida infection occurs on the skin, in the mouth or in the vagina. At OMNi-BiOTiC, weve researched the role of probiotics in Candida for many years. Based on this knowledge, Omni-Biotic Balance was developed. Omni-Biotic Balance contains specific strains of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria that restore a healthy balance of the most important probiotic bacteria in your gut, while also making the environment less inviting for Candida to settle and replicate.

Sorting Facts About Probiotics From Fiction

itechdesignamarillo: Do Probiotics Cure Yeast Infections

Vaginal probiotics are touted as a way to introduce live microorganisms into your vagina to improve health. Its true that your vagina, like your digestive tract, is teeming with beneficial bacteria and other microorganisms. When it comes to vaginal health, some common gynecological conditions are thought to be caused by an imbalance of bacteria inside the vagina. More often than not, when women seek out probiotics, theyre doing it in an attempt to ease discomfort caused by two of them: bacterial vaginosis and yeast infection, says Dr. Mitchell.

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common vaginal infection in women of childbearing age. Theres still a lot that experts dont understand about the condition, but it is associated with an overgrowth of harmful microorganisms , which outnumber healthier types of vaginal bacteria, including a common organism called Lactobacillus.

Vaginal yeast infection also stems from an imbalance in the vagina. But in this condition, the problem is a fungus called Candida, which overcomes healthy bacteria. Candida can exist normally in the vagina without any problem, but may cause trouble if it outnumbers other microorganisms.

For now, the only proven treatments for bacterial vaginosis and yeast infection are antibiotic or antifungal treatments, says Dr. Mitchell.

Probiotics For Uti Prevention

Using probiotics for uti prevention is very common practice, and is suggested by many studies as very promising natural alternative. According to the medical literature, there is a close correlation between loss of the normal good bacteria and healthy microflora, particularly lactobacillus species, and an increased incidence of genital and bladder infections . Repopulating your body with probiotics may help to restore a healthy microflora and good bacteria and therefore may help to prevent UTIs.

What Is The Vaginal Microbiome

Weve all heard about our guts microbiome, but our vaginas? Vaginal Microbiome: your vaginas defensive armor against infection

Believe it or notthats a good thing! Colonized predominantly with Lactobacillus, the beneficial bacteria feed off the sugar naturally present in the vagina. In return, they produce lactic acid in droves, helping your vagina sustain an ideal low pH 3.8 4.5 according to medical experts. At this acidic pH, only certain types of bacteria and yeast can flourishtypically the good kind, like Lactobacilli. Rich in healthy bacteria, your vagina maintains harmonious balance.

Signs You Need Probiotics For Candida Yeast Infection

Admittedly, hitherto, theres been no mention about probiotics. This is not an intentional gloss over. On the contrary, the reason for the dearth of info? Many people rely on quick, fast solutions for their health problems.

While theres nothing wrong with wanting a fast fix, its important to understand the root causes. This way, youll prevent candida overgrowth yeast infections in the future.

Before discussing why probiotics work, though, theres more background info to address. Namely, how you know you need probiotics in the first place.

Here are some signs:

  • Vaginal yeast infections and UTIs
  • Moodiness

You need probiotics if you dont absorb nutrients. And when your liver is bombarded with toxic overload, its easy to see how some of these conditions above can arise.

Thankfully, probiotics can help.

When To Expect Results

Medical Information : Home Remedies for a Vaginal Yeast Infection

Vaginal suppositories may work faster than oral probiotics. Oral probiotics may be helpful in preventing recurrent yeast infections, while vaginal suppositories are intended for more serious or acute cases.

You will see the number of probiotics in a particular supplement listed as colony-forming units, or CFUs. This is the number of probiotic strains in the supplement at the time it was produced.

Your time-to-results depends on multiple factors, including your specific clinical history, the dose and quality of the probiotic strains in your supplement, and other factors. It is best to consult a healthcare professional when selecting the appropriate strain for your yeast infection.

Probiotics May Not Prevent Yeast Infections

Australian Study Shows No Effect From Probiotic Preparations

Aug. 26, 2004 — Women shouldn’t expect probiotic preparations to prevent vaginal yeast infections, especially ones that occur after taking antibiotics, according to a new Australian study.

Many women get vaginal yeast infections after taking antibiotics. The condition, known as vulvovaginitis, is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus called Candida albicans, which leads to burning and itching.

Probiotics are microscopic organisms that help maintain the natural balance of organisms within the body. Lactobacillus is one type of probiotic used to restore the normal balance in the vagina.

Lactobacillus is “commonly used and recommended for preventing vulvovaginitis,” according to the study, which was led by Marie Pirotta, senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia.

But it doesn’t work, say the researchers.

Pirotta led a study of 235 women aged 18 to 50 who were at risk for developing vulvovaginitis because they had just started taking antibiotics for a non-gynecological infection.

Some of the women received a probiotic powder and preparation that included lactobacillus bacteria. The rest got placebo preparations.

Participants tracked their symptoms and provided vaginal swabs for analysis. The study lasted 10 days, including four days after the women finished their antibiotics.

It soon became clear that the probiotic treatments were no better than the placebo.

What Can A Doctor Prescribe For Yeast Infections

Over-the-counter antifungal medications treat yeast infections and are available in creams or suppositories for internal application. Yeast infections can last three days to two weeks, so there are one-day, three-day, or week-long treatments available.

There are also anti-itch antifungal creams that come along with most treatments to help external itching. The most popular brands of antifungal creams to treat vaginal yeast infections are Monistat or Vagistat. These treatments are also available online for those who are uncomfortable buying them in the store.

A healthcare provider may prescribe Diflucan fluconazole a tablet that will treat fungal vaginal infections, or a prescription antifungal such as terconazole , which is inserted internally at bedtime.

Be Careful Of Candida Cleanses

Be careful with Candida Cleanses! The challenge with most Candida cleanses is that eliminating the Candida is just the first step toward sustained success. Remember, Candida can be found in small amounts in the human body.

Usually, our probiotic gut bacteria and a strong immune system keep Candida under control. Candida has the opportunity to overgrow and create issues when the healthy balance of gut bacteria is interrupted and the immune system is weakened.

To avoid recurring Candida infections, we must address the root causes of Candida overgrowth. These include:

  • A diet full of sugar and preservatives
  • Prolonged periods of high stress
  • Medications that disrupt the gut microbiome
  • Other lifestyle factors that disrupt our gut microbiome and weaken our immune system

Even prescription medications that kill Candida are often successful in the short-term, but dont prevent recurring overgrowth. For long-term success, focus on a healthy diet, maintaining a strong immune system and strengthening your gut microbiome via a high quality probiotic supplement.

Most Dogs Are Deficient In Healthy Flora Here’s Why:

How do probiotics kill Candida?
  • Dogs on antibiotics will be deficient in healthy gut bacteria since antibiotics strip the gut of ALL bacteria.
  • Senior dogs will naturally have a lower volume of healthy bacteria.
  • Dogs fed processed dry kibble are susceptible to low healthy microflora.
  • Drinking municpal water treated with chemicals
  • Stress contributes to an imbalance in the microbiome .
  • Puppies are born with probiotic deficiency as their guts sterile. Supplementing your puppy with probiotics early on may give them a “leg up” on fighting illness later on.
  • Better skin and coat appearance
  • Improved breath and body smell
  • Less gas

Destroy The Yeasts Defenses

Candida and other yeast have a protective coating called the biofilm. Its made up of fiber, fat and protein and protects the yeast from immune cells. This makes the yeast harder to kill and that means its easier for the yeast to take over.

When fighting a yeast infection, you need to help destroy this biofilm. The best way to break down the biofilm is with digestive enzymes.

Your dog manufacturers his own digestive enzymes but when he has a yeast infection he often needs a boost. He also cant make cellulase, which is the enzyme that helps break down the fiber in the biofilm. That means you need to add it to his diet. .

Normally you would give your dog digestive enzymes with meals to help break down food. But when your dog has a yeast infection, you want to give the digestive enzymes between meals. That way they can focus on digesting the yeasts biofilm and not your dogs food.

Factors Affecting Safety And Efficacy Of Probiotics

Many factors can affect the properties and biological activity of probiotics. Most probiotic effects are strain-specific and the safety and efficacy of a commercial preparation are strictly linked to the formulation investigated, so the findings from clinical investigations cannot be generalized to other probiotics. In addition, the manufacturing conditions, process, and composition such as climate-controlled production room, synergic active compounds, specific overage to meet label claims and low water activity excipients are important elements which contribute to the success of a specific product and its health benefits and safety as a result, any variations, although considered minor by the manufacturers, could lead to a different product from the original one . This is particularly true for specific medical conditions such as immunomodulation and uro-genital disorders.

A Solution Springs From Frustration

But sometimes women dont respond to the standard treatments and experience recurrent problems that leave them searching for solutions. Dr. Mitchell says that some women shes encountered are trying not only probiotic supplements, but also alternative treatments theyve found on the Internet. These include putting yogurt-soaked tampons, tea tree oil, and even garlic cloves into their vaginas in an effort to introduce beneficial bacteria. These solutions, she says, are not only ineffective but highly inadvisable.

Its true that a compound in garlic, allicin, has been shown to kill yeast in a laboratory. But you cannot put enough cloves of garlic in your vagina or take enough oral garlic capsules to achieve the same effect, says Dr. Mitchell. Tea tree oil also has no demonstrated benefit and can cause irritation. Yogurt-infused tampons dont work either. Many probiotic supplements and most yogurts do contain Lactobacillus bacteria, but its generally not the same type of Lactobacillus found in your vagina. L. crispatus and L. iners are the most common species found in the vagina. Most probiotics and yogurt contain other species, such as L. rhamnosus or L. acidophilus, which are more common in the gut.

Falling Out Of Balance

This delicate balance is easily disrupted by any number of factors. Sex, semen, menstruation, vaginal washes and wipes, certain medications, and even stress are common culprits. These triggers can raise pH levels creating an environment where non-beneficial bacteria and yeast can grow and flourish throwing off your vaginas balance and making it susceptible to infection.

Lifestyle Changes For Preventing Yeast Infections

Yeast Infections and Probiotics: Do They Work?

You can do several other things beyond dieting to help prevent yeast infections. In fact, good genital hygiene is one of the best ways to prevent this type of infection. This includes:

  • Keep things clean. Use mild, unscented soap and water to keep your vaginal area clean.
  • Choose the right underwear. Your underwear should keep your genital area dry. Cotton underwear is a good choice. Sleeping without underwear can also help.
  • After using the bathroom, wipe from front to back to avoid spreading yeast or bacteria between your anus, urinary tract, or vagina.
  • Dont wear swimsuits longer than necessary. Wearing a wet swimsuit will foster the spread of yeast because it keeps things warm and wet.
  • Dont wear tight clothes. Tight-fitting clothing also keeps your genitals warm and moist.
  • Change tampons and pads regularly.
  • Avoid douches and any kind of perfumed sprays, powders, or tampons.

How Long To Take Probiotics For Candida

Before you take probiotics, theres another dietary tip you should be aware of. In addition to ditching foods with sugar, or foods that convert into sugar, also avoid fermented foods. They may be trendy and have a good reputation for being healthy. Thats because of their probiotic content. But fermented foods also feed bad bacteria.

Now then, how long should you take probiotics for candida? It depends. Have a history of lots of antibiotics usage? It could take much longer to colonize your gut with enough probiotics.

In general, though, take a probiotic supplement with at least 10 billion colony forming units every day. You should notice improvements within a couple weeks. Notice that you have bloating or other digestive upset after you start taking probiotics? Then you might want to take a supplement with lower CFU count.

If you dont notice any adverse reactions, add another 10-billion count pill.

Soil-based probiotics have a reputation of being more beneficial. The reason why is they survive the journey past your acidic stomach into your intestine. However, soil probiotics can be more expensive and harder to come by.

It can take up to a couple months to kill off the excess candida yeast.

Remember to take your probiotics every single day. Consider your gut health as important as dental hygiene. In other words, you should brush and floss every day. And take your probiotics.
