Whole Food/Drink Probiotics

Whole foods/drinks probiotics are the most natural and traditional way to get probitics. These traditional probiotic foods and drinks have thousands of years of healing tradition and are known in many cultures. Here are examples of probiotic foods:

  • Ancient Himalayan Kombucha
  • German sauerkraut
  • Korean Kimchi

These probiotic foods/drinks are very easy to make at home. You can also buy these probiotic foods and drinks at health food stores like Whole Foods.

Pill Probiotics

The next best way to get probiotics is to buy them in pill supplments. There are a wide variety of probiotic pills in varying doses. You can read about the best probiotic brands, or use our Personalized Probiotic Finder.

Powdered Probiotics

For people who dislike taking pills, probiotic powders are ideal. There are great to mix into smoothies or even just water.

Ultracruz Poultry Probiotic 10 Lb

Give your farming a different experience by investing in this UltraCruz poultry probiotic, 10 lb. The formula is genetically placed together for the benefits of the chickens. The probiotics and prebiotics for chickens offer a comprehensive digestive advantage for your birds.

When your poultry is changing diet or going through stress, it is difficult for the bird to concentrate on digesting or even feeding correctly. Therefore, with the help of the supplement, which mixes well in drinking water, your bird will regain its feeding routine for natural weight gain and increase egg production.

UltraCruz poultry probiotic plus supplies are individually for poultry. It ensures that your bird has proper digestion regardless of the condition it is living in.

The Right First Time Probiotic For You

People who have never taken probiotic supplements before should start with small doses. I understand that there is a strong desire to take the strongest probiotics. But for many people, large doses of probiotics can undesired side effects. Just as with many pharmaceutical drugs, it is wise to slowly increase the dosage over time.

As a general rule, I recommend that people who haven’t taken probiotics before start with a dose below 10 billion CFU. We’re writing an article that contains the 5 best “first time probiotics”.

Fermented foods are also a great source probiotic organisms. In my experience people will not experience side effects from these foods . I personally eat raw fermented foods & drinks every day .

For people with digestive issues, fermentation “pre-digests” foods. This way you get immediate nutrition and probiotics which increase your long term absorption of vital nutrients. Most traditional cultures have thousand year old fermentation practices.

Lactic Acid Producing Bacteria

EQUA HOLISTICS HealthyGut Probiotics Poultry Supplement, 8 ...

The lactic acid producing bacteria , for example Lactobacillus spp., Pediococcus spp. and Enterococcus spp., can be derived from various sources, which may not be particularly poultry. This may have an impact on the ability of the individual bacteria species to adhere to the firmly attached mucus layer and intestinal cell lining, and therefore reducing the ability of the bacteria to competitively exclude pathogenic bacteria from attachment sites.

This attachment is important for the early development of the immune system as it is a time when the system is being imprinted in regard to its function. With 70% of the chickens immune system in the intestine, rapid development of this system is important to the future gut health of the bird.

As the name indicates, lactic acid producing bacteria have the ability to produce organic acids, primarily acetic and lactic acid, but in a few cases butyric acid as well. They are generally produced along with a large variety of bacteriocins. Acetic acid is also used by some of the other commensal bacteria in the cecum as a food source, for example it is utilized to produce butyric acids as a metabolite. This may help explain why there is an increase in natural butyrate production with probiotics, even when no butyric acid producing bacteria are included in the probiotic mix itself.

What Probiotics Can I Give My Chickens

There are many different beneficial bacteria that normally live in a chickens digestive tract and some of the species are different from the probiotics that humans need. However, there are quite a few species that we have in common. If you look at the live bacteria present in most chicken probiotics on the market and compare them to the probiotics made for humans, youll see some of the same species in both products.

However, buying probiotics from the food supplement aisle is sure to set you back a pretty penny. Probiotics for chickens are not nearly as expensive, but the cost can add up. Plus, there are natural ways of including probiotics in your chickens diet and saving money, too!

Here are some foods that naturally contain probiotics that your chickens will love:

  • Yogurt
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Fermented grains

Feed your chickens active cultures for the best results. The beneficial bacteria need fresh sources of nutrition to keep them alive, so yogurt and other probiotic-rich foods should be fed to your flock when its fresh. While it isnt good to give your chickens a lot of dairy products, these fermented foods can be fed to them in small amounts. A tablespoon or two per day for each chicken should be fine.

Probiotics And Mucin Dynamics

Gel-Pac Gel Delivery System for Poultry

The use of probiotic supplements in the diet did not alter small intestinal morphology, but it improved goblet cell mucin storage as indicated by the ‘cup’ size in all segments of small intestine . This would be expected to follow from the increased expression of mucin mRNA and the increased level of mucin glycoprotein that were noticed in the jejunum part after supplementation of probiotic. This supplement consisted mainly of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species, which would account for increased mucin secretion and synthesis . In the study of Smirnov et al. , the probiotic affected only the amounts of the bacterial counts in the ileum in which increased proportions of Lactobacillus species were observed compared with the unsupplemented groups. A similar lack of probiotic effect on bacterial populations of small intestine was reported previously . In conclusion, the use of both probiotics in the diet changed the bacterial populations of the small intestine and affected the mucin dynamics and intestinal epithelium. These alterations may influence gut health and function and may affect nutrient uptake.

Do Probiotics Have Side Effects/dangers

Probiotic side effects are typically mild, temporary and often a sign that the probiotics are working. The side effect symptoms are often part of the natural cleansing process…they typically mimic mild detoxification reactions.

Here are the most typical side effects:

  • minor constipation

Very rarely people have more intense reactions – though they are quite mild compared to many pharmaceutical drugs.

Variability Of Bacterial Contaminants Regarding The Packaging Gas Composition

Dioxygen-enriched atmospheres have been largely used for ensuring typical red meat color during storage. However, poultry cuts may be considered differently and different gas compositions are in use for poultry cuts . CO2 has a bacteriostatic effect, which inhibits the growth of aerobic microorganisms such as Pseudomonas spp. that are considered putative spoilage organisms. The effect of different gas compositions on microbial contaminants has been evaluated . As shown in , the storage period to reach spoilage can be prolonged by CO2-enriched atmospheres when compared to storage under air. The shelf life before spoilage occurrence can be extended from six days under air to 12 and 15 days under MAP with 30% CO270% N2 and 70% CO230% N2, respectively or from 5 to 8 days with 30% CO270% N2 . B. thermosphacta, Pseudomonas, and Enterobacteriaceae counts did not seem significantly affected by the type of packaging but were detected as bacteria responsible for spoilage . LAB counts varied depending on gas composition, but also between the studies . Prolonged shelf life by CO2 enriched atmospheres has also been reported for precooked chicken breasts .

Contention Over True Synbiotics

UltraCruz Poultry Probiotic Supplement, 2 lb, Powder (150 ...

Some companies combine probiotic bacteria with prebiotic mixtures in order to produce a synbiotic product. The prebiotics advance the rapid establishment of the probiotic strains through the provision of an additional nutrient source. However, with low inclusion levels and localization in close proximity to the probiotic, the prebiotic effects will be more limited to the probiotic bacteria rather than the general microbiota, which can also utilize them. There is ongoing discussion that immune-modulating prebiotics, e.g. those used in combination with probiotic bacteriocin producing strains, where the prebiotic is not in direct support of the probiotic, is, strictly speaking, not a true synbiotic.

Extreme processing and application options

Some feed mills and farmers use exceptional heat treatments such as high temperatures and time conditioning, expansion and even extrusion. Extrusion is being utilized more and more due to increasing awareness and requirements in food safety. Under these circumstances, the viability of any probiotic, sporulated, encapsulated or not protected, is severely challenged, but the microorganism is usually not completely destroyed.

In this case, the use of water-soluble probiotics in the hatchery or on arrival at the rearing farm, can be an effective way to deliver beneficial bacteria to birds gastrointestinal tracts.

Why Didn’t Scientists Previously Know About Probiotics

Scientists have had limited knowledge of probiotics since the late 19th century. The first Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, did pioneering work on the immune benefits of yogurt.

Efficient DNA sequencing technology perfected in 1996 allowed scientists to fully research probiotics. Since 1996, thousands of probiotics research articles have been published in the most prestegious scientific journals.

Since 2009, there has been even more ground-breaking research on how much probiotics affect every aspect of our health. The combination of new research, increased media reporting and people reporting amazing results have driven a large increase of interest in probiotics.

Feed Additives For Use In Poultry Diets

How to avoid smelly chicken coop odor and flies free/Paano maiwasan ang maamoy kulungan ng chickens

A variety of different feed additives are commonly used in poultry diets, or can be used when the need arises.

Antioxidants

Fat is often added to poultry diets to increase the energy content, this is especially the case in high density broiler diets. In addition, if fish meal is used, it is high in fat. To help keep feed from going bad, which is common in high fat products, antioxidants are commonly added to the diet. Compounds with antioxidant properties include ethoxyquin, butylhydroxytoluene , butylhydroxyanisole , vitamin C, and vitamin E.

Free-flowing agents

It is important that the feed flow easily so that it does not cake in the feeders. Free-flowing agents are substances added to the diet to make sure the feeds do not pack down. Free-flowing agents typically have fine particulate structures while not reacting to the other ingredients in the feed. A common free-flowing agent is hydrated sodium aluminosilicate.

Pelleting additives

Pelleting of feeds has been shown to improve feed efficiency for some poultry species. Most broiler feeds are pelleted. It is important to make sure that the feed ingredients can be packed together in bite-sized pellets without a lot of fines. A variety of pelleting additives are available.

Feeding enzymes

Mold inhibitors or mycotoxin binders

Coccidiostats

Antibiotics

Antibiotic alternatives

Probiotics For Chickens Plus A Poultry Acidifier

This synergistic combination allows to enhance antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity of these additives . This effect reduces Gram-negative microorganisms proliferation. Control of Gram- microorganism, such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli can be complicated since these bacteria have shown to express resistance against some antibiotics.

Combining synbiotic and acidifiers cause enhance the antimicrobial efficacy of the additives, and potentiates proliferation of beneficial bacteria activity, carrying on improvement of digestibility and absorption of nutrients through different mechanism of action. Beneficial microbial activity is crucial since probiotics have proved to be very effective to competitively exclude microorganisms such as Salmonella .

Synergism of the mode of action of these two feed additives is due to the reduction on pH of the environment by the acidifiers offering proper condition for probiotic bacteria growth. Furthermore, probiotic bacteria can produce a higher concentration of volatile fatty acids , drop on pH of lumen environment controls proliferation of Gram- enteric pathogens and also contribute to the competitive exclusion activity of benefitial microbiota.

However, the benefits of using these natural strategies not only contemplate antimicrobial activity , but also enhance digestion and absorption of nutrients, this strategy can reduce the impact of enteric pathogens on the birds performance .

Evaluating Probiotic Effects On Growth Performance

Studies on the beneficial impact on poultry performance have indicated that probiotic supplementation can have positive effects. It is clearly evident from the result of Kabir et al. that the live weight gains were significantly higher in experimental birds as compared to control ones at all levels during the period of 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th weeks of age, both in vaccinated and nonvaccinated birds. This result is in agreement with many investigators who demonstrated increased live weight gain in probiotic fed birds. On the other hand, Lan et al. found higher weight gains in broilers subjected to two probiotic species. Huang et al. demonstrated that inactivated probiotics, disrupted by a high-pressure homogenizer, have positive effects on the production performance of broiler chickens when used at certain concentrations. In addition, Torres-Rodriguez et al. reported that administration of the selected probiotic to turkeys increased the average daily gain and market BW, representing an economic alternative to improve turkey production. However, Karaoglu and Durdag used Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a dietary probiotic to assess performance and found no overall weight gain difference.
