Probiotics are a type of beneficial bacteria being explored to ease eczema, a common disorder that results in red, swollen, and itchy skin. The use of probiotic supplements in particular is purported to protect against immune dysfunction and reduce inflammationtwo key factors in the development of eczema.
Naturally present in the human body, probiotics are also found in foods like yogurt, kefir, and certain fermented foods, in addition to dietary supplements. There are more than 400 different strains of probiotics. Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacteria are among the strains commonly used for eczema.

The Gut Microbiome And Eczema: How Are Probiotics Beneficial
The microbiome, or microbiota, is the current name given to the organisms living on the surface of the skin, in our intestine, our lungs, mouth, and more. We couldnt survive without this incredible medley of bacteria, viruses and fungi, and vice versa. There are 10 million per cm2 on our skin, and 100,000 billion in a single digestive tract! Our immune system needs these microbiomes in order to function properly.
It therefore makes sense to consider an anomaly or imbalance in the microbiomes in the case of an inflammatory disease like atopic dermatitis, in which the immune systems are a bit overzealous.
A number of recent discoveries have shed some light on atopic dermatitis:
- A link between a skin microbiome imbalance and a disruption in the skins immune system, thus forming a couple on the skin
- A link between an intestinal microbiome imbalance and a disruption in the intestines immune system, thus forming a couple in the intestine
- A vicious cycle perpetuated by inflammation itself within each couple

What Else Can I Do To Help Manage Eczema
There are many factors that may be involved in eczema onset and severity. Making minor dietary and lifestyle changes can assist in the management of eczema symptoms. Some positive changes you can make include:
- Consume a healthy well balanced diet that is rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and essential fatty acids such as those from cold water fish, nuts and seeds.
- Replace inflammatory fats from foods such as meat products, poultry and dairy with the anti-inflammatory poly-unsaturated fats such as those from deep sea fish, avocado, olive oil, nuts and seeds.
- Identify and avoid any foods that you might be sensitive to, as they may trigger or exacerbate eczema symptoms.
- Aim to drink 1.5 2 litres of water daily to help support the detoxifying capacity of the body.
- Avoid exposure to toxins and chemicals that may aggravate eczema symptoms such as those found in many household cleaning products and skin care products. When possible, opt for bio-degradable cleaning fluids and skin care products based on natural ingredients such as vitamin E and olive oil.
