Best Yogurt For Toddlers With Probiotics

How Do You Prepare Yogurt For Babies With Baby

Probiotics for Kids – Do Kids Need Probiotics?

Every baby develops on their own timeline. The preparation suggestions below are for informational purposes only and are not a substitute for professional, one-on-one advice from your pediatric medical or health professional, nutritionist or dietitian, or expert in pediatric feeding and eating. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking it because of something you have read or seen here.

6 to 9 months old: Offer full-fat , pasteurized, plain yogurt. Greek yogurt is perfect for this age and will be easiest for babies to self-feed. Let baby scoop up the yogurt with their hands and/or eat from a pre-loaded spoon . If you have already successfully introduced nut or seed butters, mixing them into yogurt will pack an extra nutritional punch and make the yogurt a bit thicker .

9 to 12 months old: At this age babies are starting to get a bit more dexterous with their fingers and may be able to pick up pre-loaded spoons independently. Continue to offer full-fat , pasteurized, plain yogurt or full-fat Greek yogurt and give baby plenty of opportunities to pick up the pre-loaded spoon independently. Note that many babies will tire with this activity quickly so dont worry if you need to go back and forth between letting baby eat yogurt with their fingers, a pre-loaded spoon handed over the air, or a pre-loaded spoon resting on the edge of a bowl. Multiple spoons at the same time will help!

Which Is The Best & Healthiest Type Of Probiotic Yogurt For Kids

Probiotics are essential – they affect a growing childs development, digestive and immune health. Probiotics also lower the risk of colic, eczema and obesity- all common childhood concerns. Probiotic yogurt and yogurt drinks can be an easy way to sneak the beneficial bacteria needed for gut health into your childs diet. When making a decision on which yogurt to choose, you should take the time to find a brand that contains no added sugars or preservatives. This might be difficult, considering most probiotic yogurts for kids are meant to taste good and last on the shelf . Giving your child a probiotic yogurt thats full of sugar and chemicals completely negates the point of giving them a probiotic in the first place these additives will do more harm than good to the gut microbiome.

Background And Origins Of Yogurt

Milk and bacteria might not seem like a match made in heaven, but thats exactly what yogurt ismilk fermented with bacterial cultures until it is nearly solid. While the word yoghurt is Turkish in origin, the same basic food has been made and eaten throughout Europe, North Africa, and Asia for thousands of years. This long history has led to many distinct forms of yogurt and yogurt byproducts, including thinner, drinkable yogurts, dried yogurt, and yogurt-like foods such as skyr and labneh. Yogurt can be enjoyed on its own or used in cooking and baking, both in savory and sweet dishes.

Tip: Large containers of yogurt are typically more affordable per ounce/milliliter than small, single-serving containers.

How To Reduce Sugar In Yogurt

YoBaby Blueberry / Apple

If your little one is eating a flavored yogurt that has more sugar than youd like, dont freak out. You can try just switching to plain and see how it goes, or you can try one of these options:

  • Mix their flavored yogurt with plain. Over time, decrease the amount of the flavored yogurt and increase the amount of plain.
  • Sweet add-ins for plain yogurt:
  • Fruit purée from jar or pouch
  • Mashed banana

Noosa Yogurt Lemon 8oz

If youre looking for something a bit sweeter and more exotic, this Australian lemon and honey yogurt might be the ticket to tantalise your tastebuds. It does have a fair bit more sugar than the above 2 options, sitting at around 12 grams of sugar per 100 grams, however, this is common with flavored yogurts and shouldnt be an issue if its only consumed as an occasional treat.

It contains S.thermophilus, L.bulgaricus, L.acidophilus, Bifidus and L.casei as well as a bunch of natural ingredients like lemon juice, butter and fruit puree to give it a tangy, fresh flavor. Wed recommend this to anyone with a bit of a sweet tooth whos wanting to satisfy their cravings between meals or after dinner.

Pros

  • Contains vitamin A, C, calcium, protein and iron

Cons

  • Roughly 12g sugar per 100g

Fun Yogurt Tips And Ideas

  • Make plain yogurt more fun and flavorful by sweetening it with your own honey and adding fruits like berries.
  • Add it to smoothies by the spoonful or in frozen cubes for a yummy on-the-go breakfast. To make frozen cubes, fill an ice cube tray with your favorite yogurt and then freeze until solid.
  • At lunch or dinner, use plain Greek yogurt in place of sour cream, heavy cream, or mayonnaise in pasta, tuna or potato salad.
  • For a fun snack, use half a banana with a Popsicle stick placed in the bottom. Dunk the banana in low-fat yogurt, then roll in granola and enjoy!
  • Make a fruit dip by stirring together 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  • For a healthy dessert, try freezer-mold popsicles with equal parts yogurt, nonfat milk and fruit. Or for a parfait, layer yogurt with fresh fruit or berries and top with a sprinkle of high fiber, no sugar added granola.

As you can see, you can use yogurt in a variety of ways. Use your imagination and see what other healthy ideas you can create!

Aim For Low Sugar Yogurt

Good Health: Probiotics for kids

Read the labels on flavored yogurt as the sugar content varies considerably. One British Medical Journal study showed that sugar content in yogurt for kids had quite a range:

  • Plain/Greek yogurts: 5.0 g
  • Childrens yogurts:10.8 g
  • Flavored yogurts:12.0 g
  • Fruit yogurts: 11.9 g
  • Organic yogurts: 13.1 g

They found that less than 9% of childrens yogurts qualified as a low sugar product.

Whole Milk Yogurt For Babies

When choosing the best yogurt for babies the first thing to look for is whole milk or full-fat yogurt.

Fat is very important for brain development and before the age of 2, its extra important that the food the young toddler or baby eats is nourishing so that they meet their nutritional needs. Since babies and toddlers dont eat a lot of food, the food they do eat needs to meet their nutritional requirements and every calorie should count.

The best whole milk yogurt for babies will also be free of extra ingredients and especially sweetener.

Health Benefits Of Yogurt

Yogurt is a well-balanced food complete with healthy fats, a good serving of protein, and milk sugar. Plus, organic whole yogurt is also high in:

  • Calcium: This mineral promotes strong bones.
  • Vitamin D: This vitamin helps your body absorb calcium. It also helps boost the immune system.
  • Phosphorus: Like calcium and vitamin D, this too helps promote strong bones and teeth.
  • Naturally-occuring live cultures: These live cultures are probiotics, which are gut-healthy flora that help colonize babys gut with beneficial bacteria.

Are There Probiotics In Breast Milk

Pin by Jonathan Seelig on packaging

Yes there are probiotics in breast milk. Research estimates that breastfed infants receive between 100,000 to 1 million bacteria per day. This is based on an average daily consumption of about 27 ounces of human milk. Most are from the genera Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium.

Dairy Free Yogurt For Babies

There are many dairy-free yogurts now available on the market. If your baby has a milk allergy you may be wondering if a dairy-free yogurt could be right for your baby. Dairy-free yogurts are made with coconut, almond, oat and soy milk.

When choosing any yogurt , read the ingredient list to minimize unnecessary additives and ensure there are no sweeteners. Often times, plant-based dairy alternatives have numerous additives in them so compare products at your local grocery store to find the best fit for your family and child.

Keep in mind that the fat content of non-dairy yogurt can differ significantly. For example, oat milk yogurt has minimal fat and therefore may not be the best choice for young babies and toddlers. Almond milk yogurt such as Kite Hill can offer more fat and protein while coconut milk yogurt such as So Delicious Coconut Yogurt offers fat but not much protein.

Added Vs Natural Sugar

Sugar is the ingredient that varies the most between different yogurts. For our little ones, its important to limit their added sugars because it doesnt add any nutrition to their food. And it contributes to cavities, which Im sure you know already!

All dairy yogurt will have naturally occurring sugar, because its made from milk, and milk has naturally occurring sugar called lactose. This is the same type of sugar found in breastmilk! You dont need to avoid this type of sugar for your baby or toddler.

The problem is that most flavored yogurt adds sugar. And to make it more confusing most labels dont tell you how much sugar is natural and how much is added.

Yogurt Can Vary In Its Fat Content

There are non-fat, fat free and full fat options on the shelves. Like protein, fat also helps contribute to a feeling of fullness after eating because it takes longer to digest. A whole milk based yogurt may be more filling and satisfying than a low fat or fat free kind. Fat is important to help our bodies absorb fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A and D.

The Best Probiotic Foods For Kids

For the best probiotic foods for kids, there are several things to take into consideration. While we use one name probiotics to describe these friendly gut bacteria, there are many different kinds. Probiotics come in various strains, and different strains have different benefits.

We have less concrete research on the benefits of probiotic foods for kids than for supplements, but theres no harm in serving them! Im sharing my favorite probiotic foods for kids below, including the best picky eater choices.

Plain Whole Milk Yogurt

Why plain? Well first of all it is incredibly versatile. You can use it in recipes in the place of milk or sour cream for extra richness and nutrient density. You can also use in in place of sour cream to top chili, tacos, chilaquiles, split pea soup, THE LIST GOES ON! Its something I always have on hand, whereas sour cream is something I would have to specifically grab if I needed it for a recipe.

Secondly, yogurt is one of those super healthy foods that sometimes gets a super unhealthy makeover by being loaded with sugar and other sweeteners, along with too much added flavoring. This is especially true in yogurts marketed to kids . Yogurt has a naturally tangy flavor that is a great one for babies to learn to like early on, potentially helping to set them up to accept more challenging flavors later in life. Serving it plain highlights this without the added readily accepted sweetness and fruit flavors.

When serving yogurts to babies and toddlers, look for varieties made with whole milk . You can choose either Greek or regular varieties. Greek yogurt has been strained to remove more of the whey, so is higher in protein and usually in fat too if the fat is left in the finished product. It tends to be thicker and creamier , where regular plain yogurt is a bit thinner and lower in protein and fat. Regular yogurt is also less expensive when compared to Greek.

Brainiac Kids Smart Tubes

Brainiac Kids is a fairly new line of yogurt for kids, having launched in 2019.

Their yogurts are non-GMO, gluten-free, and have no artificial flavors. What makes their yogurts different is that they contain a proprietary blend of omega-3 fatty acids, including DHA, EPA, ALA, the healthy fats kids need as well as choline, an essential nutrient for brain development and memory function.

While their Smart Tubes in mixed berry dont have a lot of protein and have 4 grams of added sugars, theyre a good option if your kids wont eat plain, unsweetened yogurt.

Healthiest Yogurts For Kids

Little Chobani Probiotic Yogurt Pouches for Kids ...

Yogurt is a favorite food for many kids and for good reason. Its also a great way to get a lot of nutrition into your child – protein, calcium, Vitamin D, probiotics and more depending on the brand. The only problem is that many yogurts for kids have a lot of added sugar. While milk naturally contains sugar, which causes every yogurt to have some sugar, adding tons of extra sugar can detract from the other health benefits. I have no problem with a trade-off of a little sugar to make the food more palatable, but when a yogurt is more than half of the recommended sugar for the day, its definitely not going to make the list of healthiest yogurts. Keep in mind that the recommendation for children 2 – 18 is to have less than 25 g of added sugar per day. While I think that number is kind of low and challenging in the environment we live in, trying to keep it as close to that number as possible is a good goal. These are some of the healthiest yogurt options for kids:

YoBaby Organic Yogurt

Not just for babies, this whole milk yogurt has NO added sweeteners. At 5 grams sugar for 4 oz , you cant go wrong. The plain also has only 5 grams sugar. Note that the other flavors have added sugar.

Chobani Gimmies Yogurt Tubes

With 4 g sugar in a 1.5 oz tube and yummy flavors like cherry set go and creamy orange dreamy, these are a great snack to pack with lunch.
