Probiotics For 2 Month Old

Is There A Benefit From Probiotic Foods

Newborn Morning Routine | FIRST TIME MOM | 2 Months Old!

We dont really know if the amount of probiotics in foods or the type will beneficially impact your childs health. And if it does have an impact, we dont know how long the effect lasts.

But most probiotic foods are healthy for other reasons, in addition to the possible benefit from probiotics, so I still recommend serving them to your child.

Are Probiotics Safe For Kids

6 October 11

Probiotics are so common in yogurt these days, you might not think twice about giving foods laced with good bacteria to your youngsters. But do probiotics provide any benefits for children?

In general, giving probiotics to your kids is not harmful, but theres not a lot of proof it does much good, either. Some studies show probiotics might be beneficial in treating and preventing diarrhea, but the effects are modest, experts say.

So far, studies looking at the effects of probiotics on other gut disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, have not consistently shown a benefit. And a study published last week in the journal Pediatrics found no evidence that probiotics provide any relief for kids with constipation.

In the end, attempts to change the community of bacteria in kids tummies, and, consequently, their health, with probiotics may prove futile.

Given the level of evidence, I can categorically say that I would not recommend parents going out of their way to give probiotics to children, said Dr. Frank Greer, a professor of pediatrics at Meriter Hospital in Madison, Wis. Greer was the lead researcher for the American Academy of Pediatrics that addressed the issue. Even if they eat the yogurt with five different probiotics in it, as soon as they stop taking the yogurt, the bacteria in their bodies will revert back to its normal state, Greer said.

Probiotics for newborns are not recommended by doctors, as they are considered unnecessary. A newborn child has a sterile intestine, which means that there are no bacteria present in the gastrointestinal tract. These bacteria are actually unnecessary at the time, as the baby is not exposed to any other food than breast milk. By the first birthday, children acquire healthy gut flora from the breast milk they drink, and with a diet of yoghurt also given to the child, probiotics are not deemed necessary for children. However, if the child undergoes periods of severe vomiting or diarrhoea or has recently undertaken a long course of antibiotics, doctors recommend that the child be given probiotics. These ensure that healthy gut flora return to the intestinal tract and the immune system of the child is strengthened again. Therefore, they must be given to the child if the child was administered antibiotics. Other reasons for providing probiotics to babies are ear infections, eczema, baby thrush, diaper rash, or constipation.

It is to be always remembered that one should not start with probiotics on their own, as there are different types of them and its best to be advised by the doctor. Natural foods containing probiotics, such as curd, buttermilk, etc., are safe to consume and can be taken without any consultation.

What Do Probiotics Help With

While probiotics may help infants with numerous different gut related issues, here are some of the main ones. Keep in mind that there is very little research on probiotics and infants but some clinical trials and anecdotal evidence has shown that they may be helpful for:

  • skin issues eczema, baby acne, dry or patchy skin
  • improving immunity
  • reducing the risk of early childhood obesity
  • relieving a stuffy nose, respiratory infection, and trouble breathing
  • reducing the risk of food intolerances and food allergies
  • producing hormones, like serotonin
  • improving mood, motivation, and cognitive health
  • repairing damaged tissue from injuries

Even if your baby or toddler isnt experiencing any of these symptoms, chances are they still could benefit from a probiotic.

Yet Some Mothers Have Been Told That When Their Baby Is Colicky She Is Allergic To Their Breast Milk

Mother Nature couldnt possibly make this kind of mistake. This is simply a clue that your babys inner ecosystem is lacking the healthy microbes needed to digest breast milk. Giving your baby probiotics is especially important if youre unable to breastfeed due to your own compromised health, or if you have decided that breastfeeding is just not right for you.

PCoA plots based on the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity distance show no distinct clustering of microbial communities at any age except for at 1 week. Table summary of PERMANOVA results ran on the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity, and weighted and unweighted UniFrac distances between the two groups. The values at the intersect of a blue cell and an orange cell show the estimated P value of the corresponding time points.

Differences in the abundance of taxa between the groups were assessed using two complimentary approaches at each time-point. Differences in the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium spp. in the probiotics group at one week of age was detected as significantly different using ANCOM . LEfSe results showing significantly different taxa between fecal samples between probiotics and no probiotics infants at one week of age. The cladogram reports the taxa showing different abundance values according to LEfSe. Colors indicate the lineages that are encoded within corresponding samples. Higher taxa abundance in the probiotics group is colored blue whereas higher taxa abundance in the no probiotics group is colored orange. Infants directly supplemented with BioGaia according to the manufacturers recommendations show similar results to . P< 0.05.

Why Does My Baby Need Probiotics

The baby years are some of the most important for microbiome development. This time forms part of the first 1000 days1 of life, which were reported by the government to be instrumental in a childs overall development. So, having lots of the right bacteria is very important. Scientists acknowledge that a delay in the development in the first year may affect health in later childhood, teen years and adulthood. As 70% of the immune system is in the gut, this stage is also essential for healthy immune development. Find out more about the importance of probiotics for a childs immune health.

With all this in mind, you might want to consider probiotics as a part of your babys daily routine.

Babies are in a developmental period, so they may not suit a probiotic targeted towards older children or adults. A probiotic trialled for digestive health in adults might not work the same in infants. This is because their microbiomes are at different stages and may have different bacteria present. Some researchers call this the baby biome because it is so distinct! Probiotics designed especially for babies use bacteria that would be present naturally in the gut during these early years.

Baby probiotics often come in different formats to adult probiotics such as powder or drops. Drops are usually the easiest way to administer probiotics to babies.

What is colic?

  • Colic is excessive crying of unknown cause in babies less than 3 months old.

  • The scientific definition for colic is:crying or fussing more than 3 hours of the day for more than 3 days of the week.

  • Colic is a diagnosis that can only be made after the baby has been examined and it is felt that the babys crying is not due to any medical cause.

How common is colic?

Colic is very common, affecting around 1 in 5 babies less than 3 months old.

What are the symptoms of colic ?

The symptoms of colic usually start within the first few weeks of life, with the crying usually peaking at 6 to 8 weeks, then spontaneously resolving after 3 to 4 months. Parents usually report babies with colic to have unpredictable episodes of crying that are hard to soothe, often occurring in the late afternoons and evenings. The crying babies may look like they are in pain because they often draw up their legs, arch their back and pass wind, often because of swallowing air during crying.

Why do babies get colic?

No one knows why babies get colic, despite years of research. Some people think it is the extreme spectrum of normal baby crying. Some people think it is because of pain originating from the gut.Others think it is because of the babys temperament, affected by the mothers mood. None of these theories have scientifically been proven to be true.

What Are The Benefits Of Probiotics For Toddlers And Kids

Research shows that some probiotics can help prevent antibiotic-related diarrhea in children. For this reason, pediatricians often recommend that kids take probiotics whenever theyre on antibiotics.

Since some antibiotics wipe out good bacteria along with the infection-causing bacteria, probiotics act as the reserve corps the reinforcements sent in to bulk up the numbers of helpful bacteria and crowd out the illness-causing bacteria.

These good little soldiers also help strengthen the intestinal lining so that bad bugs cant multiply freely, and they may change the intestinal environment, making it more balanced and therefore less desirable for bad bacteria.

Other research has found that probiotics can shorten a bout of diarrhea in children whove caught an infection by about one day.

For now, at least, the strongest evidence for probiotics is for preventing and relieving the kind of diarrhea that comes with antibiotics and the infectious diarrhea that can be picked up at day care and while traveling.

When Can You Introduce Probiotics To Your Child

Natural probiotics can be introduced to children from an early age, as they do not have any harmful effects on the child. However, they are not necessary for children whose diet only consists of breast milk. Only after the child starts on a diet of solid food, probiotics are usually given. This is because the exposure of the child to the environment is higher, thus putting the child at risk of being attacked by dangerous microorganisms. Still, your child might be getting enough friendly bacteria from normal food items, such as yoghurt and vegetables. Probiotics are introduced earlier to children if they have been given antibiotics constantly. This is because those medicines usually remove the bacteria which have colonized the gut, making your intestinal tract gullible to infections and attacks.
