Probiotics For Babies Under 1 Year

How Do Baby Probiotics Work

Why Your Baby Needs Probiotics For A Healthy Gut?

Baby probiotics best act on intestinal microbes, affecting the mucosal immune mechanisms, promoting the production of useful metabolic products, and interacting with beneficial and harmful bacteria.

All of this leads to the suppression of pathogenic microbiota, an increase in the growth of beneficial bacteria, a decrease in inflammation in the intestinal wall, and a strengthening of the gastrointestinal tract barrier.

These mechanisms and effects contribute to a reduction in the frequency and severity of diarrhea which is the most common reason for prescribing probiotics in children.

Fact Sheet: Probiotics For Infants And Children

From the Centre for Community Child Health

In recent years, probiotic supplementation in our foods and probiotics promoted as dietary supplements have become quite common. You will usually see probiotics advertised as an aid to gut health. For babies and children, probiotics are promoted as possibly being helpful for conditions as varied as diarrhoea, infant colic and allergy. However, evidence is mixed on whether probiotics are actually effective for a range of infant conditions.

All babies are born with a sterile gut. After birth, babies naturally introduce bacteria to their gut through the breast milk or formula they drink, and later through the food they eat. These bacteria are an important part of the way that humans digest food and extract all the necessary nutrients. They also play a role in your baby’s developing immune system. Probiotic supplements are intended to aid the bacterial colonisation of your baby’s gut or to restore it when it has been disrupted.

Importantly, probiotics have strain-specific effects, which means that different types of probiotics will act in different ways. Probiotics as a term is equivalent to canine for different dog breeds it gives you a broad idea, but no indication of whether you’re faced with a Chihuahua or a Doberman.

The most common groups of probiotics are:

  • Lactobacillus
  • Saccharomyces boulardii

All of these different groups of probiotics can have different effects in the body.

Are Probiotics Safe For Infants And Toddlers

Generally yes, all brands can safely be given to healthy babies or toddlers. Keep in mind that probiotics are considered a supplement and not a medication, so are not regulated by the FDA. When choosing a probiotic for baby and to ensure its safety, its best to look for one that has been certified by an independent body like ConsumerLab, USP or NSF International. Please consult your pediatrician before you start a probiotic or if you have any questions or concerns, especially if your child has a weak immune system, was born prematurely or has other health issues.

Probiotic Supplementation Is Not Associated With Breast Milk Immunity

What is the diet role in Autism Child | Probiotics for Kids with Autism | Autism Diet Plan

Innate and adaptive immune cells found in breast milk protect infants from mucosal infections while their immune system develops. To determine if probiotic supplementation influenced the protective potential of breast milk, immune cytokines were examined in the breast milk. In addition, IgE was analyzed to determine if probiotics were associated with markers of allergies whereas sIgA was analyzed as a marker of mucosal protection against enteric disease. The multivariate generalized linear models of the breast milk cytokines showed no differences between groups . Similarly, there were no significant differences between levels of sIgA or IgE in breast milk , showing that probiotic supplementation was not associated with protective immune responses in breast milk.

Infant exposure to probiotics correlates with increased mucosal illness during the first 2 years of life and corresponding immune responses at 5 months of age. Infants exposed to probiotics had significantly higher reported mucosal infections compared to the no probiotics group but were able to clear infections at similar rates. Probiotic exposure during the first 6 months is associated with no changes in breast milk sIgA but modest increases in fecal sIgA. There were no differences in either breast milk or infant stool IgE levels. *Denotes P< 0.05.

Why Are Probiotics Important

Lets back up for a second to talk about why youd want to take probiotics.

Our bodies are full of bacteria. And although that may sound like a bad thing, less than one percent of bacteria makes us sick. Other bacteria in our systems are considered good bacteria, since they are vital for our bodies to function and play a key role in keeping us healthy.

Probiotics ensure that our systems have enough good bacteria to function the way they are intended to.

Beta diversity assessment of microbial communities over a 6-month period of probiotics and no probiotics exposed infants. PCoA plots based on the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity distance show no distinct clustering of microbial communities at any age except for at 1 week. Table summary of PERMANOVA results ran on the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity, and weighted and unweighted UniFrac distances between the two groups. The values at the intersect of a blue cell and an orange cell show the estimated P value of the corresponding time points.

Differences in the abundance of taxa between the groups were assessed using two complimentary approaches at each time-point. Differences in the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium spp. in the probiotics group at one week of age was detected as significantly different using ANCOM . Can Baby Probiotics Help With Colic

Signs that your baby may be suffering from colic is when a baby is in distress and cries for long periods of time. There are many theories about what causes colic, including gastrointestinal discomfort. The research is promising on the effectiveness of probiotics for babies with colic.

A 2014 study looked at how probiotics could reduce colic symptoms. The study examined the results of 589 infants that received either probiotics or a placebo daily for 90 days. Researchers found that the infants using the supplements cried less and had fewer gastrointestinal symptoms.

Other studies have shown similar results. Omni-Biotic Panda has also shown in a clinical study with infants to reduce symptoms associated with 3-month colic, including crying duration and digestive discomfort.

The strain of probiotic may affect the supplements effectiveness. Researchers have seen positive outcomes with L. reuteri.

Are Probiotics Safe For Infants

Studies show that probiotics are not only safe, but very effective in reducing daily crying time, spit up, and constipation during the first three months of life.

Probiotics or prebiotics added to infant formula and other foods marketed for use in children do not appear to be harmful to healthy infants and children. AAP

Still, it is very important to talk to your pediatrician before giving baby anything but breast milk.

Probiotics Are Not Associated With Gut Microbiome Function

The trillions of bacteria present in the gut have redundant genetic contribution and therefore similar functions. Predicted metagenomic functions of the microbial communities using phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states , revealed no predicted functional differences between the two cohorts. Another method of assessing the functions of the intestinal microbial communities is through measuring fecal SCFAs, the by products of bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates. We analyzed the presence of fecal acetate, butyrate, and propionate which have been found to play an important role in regulating intestinal homeostatic and immune responses. Probiotic exposure was not associated with changes in the abundances of these SCFAs found in the infants stool showing that despite some taxonomic differences, neither predicted gut microbial function nor SCFAs were different between groups .

Abundances of fecal SCFAs acetic acid, butyric acid, and propionic acid between probiotics and no probiotics exposed infants at 5 months of age expressed as mass % .

Probiotics, or “good” bacteria, are popular supplements that promote gut health and a healthy microbiome for people of all ages. For children in particular, some evidence shows that probiotics may have beneficial effects for those with digestive issues such as diarrhea, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. The gut health-promoting bacteria may also prevent allergies and improve skin disorders like eczema.

Some clinical trials have shown the use of probiotics to be effective, but it’s best to consult with your family’s healthcare provider to determine whether a probiotic is right for your child. Whether your child prefers a chewable, gummy, liquid, or powder probiotic supplement, there’s a product on the market for every preference.

Side Effects Of Probiotics On Children

Probiotics are live and active microorganisms, mainly bacteria, which are similar to those that exist naturally in the human digestive tract. Often referred to as friendly bacteria, probiotics may help to encourage digestion and regularity, as well as replenish bacterial flora after a course of antibiotics. Side effects of probiotics in children are similar to those in adults, although they may be more dangerous in children. You should always consult your childs pediatrician before feeding them food containing probiotics.

When Will My Toddler Be Able To Eat Yogurt With A Spoon

Learning to scoop and get foods into little mouths is definitely a learning process, so dont worry if your two year old still makes a mess of things when they eat with a spoon. The most important thing is that they have the chance to practice their spoon skills, so offer it and understand that they still may use their handssince thats often a more effective method!

TIP: I love to offer yogurt in a reusable pouch at times and in bowls at other times. Both are great ways to serve yogurt to both babies and toddlers.

Is There A Minimum Age Limit

Different companies may make different probiotics for newborns, older babies and toddlers. Although there is no minimum age specified for general probiotic use, as mentioned above, it’s always important to discuss with your child’s doctor first. “You should always talk to your pediatrician before starting a specific probiotic, and this is especially important if your child has a compromised immune system or cancer,” says Dr. Ferry.

Probiotic Foods: Hype Or Health

OptiBac Probiotics For Babies & Children 90 Sachets ...

Interestingly, your child’s GI tract is as unique to him as his fingerprints are. Each child has trillions of different microbes living in him, and no two kids have the same mix of bacteria. Two of the most common categories of beneficial bacteria that naturally occur in our body are called Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, and it is generally these healthy bugs that food manufacturers use in their products. The marketplace is rife with specific strains of each of these bacterial groups . “Like antibiotics, probiotics are confusing to people because each one is different,” says Dr. Merenstein. The antibiotic that will treat your child’s ear infection won’t necessarily treat her pneumonia. The same holds true for probiotics — one strain does not prevent or treat all ailments.

And it’s not just the strain that’s important, but the dose. Some food product labels list strain names along with the amount of live bacteria, usually cited on labels exponentially as 109 or 1010 CFUs . However, many products don’t provide this information, so you may need to contact the company or visit its Website to get the info.
