Probiotics are live microorganisms that can maintain or improve the growth of good bacteria in the body when consumed through, for example, fermented foods, yogurt, or dietary supplements, according to the Mayo Clinic. And while you’re technically born with a whole bunch of probiotics, certain factors such as poor diet and theuse of antibiotics can reduce the amount you have in your body.

“Antibiotics are anti-inflammatory, which is why we often use them in dermatology to treat conditions like acne and rosacea,” she explains. “But antibiotics don’t differentiate between good and bad bacteria in the gut, and often destroy both. This causes an imbalance in the gut and can lead to developing digestive issues and yeast infections during treatment. Probiotics can help restore balance by reintroducing more good bacteria and reduce some of those symptoms.”

These little bugs work primarily in the gastrointestinal tract, where they can positively impact your gut microbiome and, in doing so, help protect your GI tract from an overgrowth of harmful microorganisms as well as improve your digestion and gut function, according to the National Institutes of Health. In addition to keeping your GI system in check, probiotics can also provide a myriad of other health benefits, including improving your mood, boosting your immunity, and promotehealthy skin function.

Studies have shown that probiotics have successfully treated inflammatory skin issues, such as atopic dermatitis, especially in children. Skin prone to acne or rosacea has shown improvement with probiotic use as well.

A recent study has proven that people with acne actually have a completely different arrangement of gut bacteria and fungus compared to those without acne. The study found that those with acne had less gut diversity AND an undesirable balance of particular bacterial families in the gut. While the study isn’t proving acne is caused from dysbiosis it is solidifying the theory that those with acne likely have dysbiosis, and in my opinion, certainly supports the need for gut support in the journey of healing your skin. This study also supports the theory behind the link between gut health and acne. Therefore, for many of my clients, I start them on probiotics to help acne. In my practice, I’ve found that the right probiotic is an integral part of the best acne treatment for my individual clients. There’s also the issue of potentially making digestive symptoms worse- when certain conditions are present taking a probiotic may make you feel worse and unfortunately won’t do much for your skin.

While we don’t know if the bacteria is getting to the intestines in this form, we can definitely start working on the microbiome of the mouth- which can effect your gut health . Read more about that here.

Can Probiotics Help Combat Acne

The increasing interest in probiotics for maintaining skin health can explain very well that probiotics can improve acne-related problems more effectively. Lets dive into how exactly this happens.

American Academy of Dermatology even suggests that probiotics can be a promising future for both acne and rosacea.

Strains such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium have been shown to reduce inflammatory reactions by inhibiting the pro-inflammatory mediators that aid in acne formation.

Besides that, an increased free radical portion can enhance oxidative stress, a mediator associated with inflammation. An article published by the British Journal of Nutrition proposes that the marker of acne inflammation, Hydroperoxide, can be reduced by certain probiotic strains.

Other than that, the leaky gut syndrome can be managed with probiotics. Click here to know more about how probiotics can play a key role in this disorder.

Probiotics are essentially the good bacteria taken as a supplement. To remedy dysbiosis, its a good idea to add probiotics to your diet. In this way, your body will be able to increase the levels of good bacteria and suppress the bad ones.

The above mentioned are ways one can understand how probiotics have multidimensional functions, resulting in improved health.

What Does This Have To Do With My Skin

Two things, actually. Inside your body, the bacteria in your gut interacts with your immune system, which can affect your skin, Bowe says. “Certain inflammatory skin disorders like acne, rosacea, and eczema are thought to flare in those whose gut bacterial mix has been thrown out of balance, says Bowe.

If your bod’s natural balance of bacteria gets thrown out of whack , that can damage your intestinal lining. This allows irritating substances that are normally digested to float into your bloodstream, which sets off your immune system and can cause inflammation throughout the body, including redness and skin sensitivity.

More About Probiotics:

Then, remember how Bowe said there’s a bunch of bacteria sitting on top of your skin, too? “If your skins healthy microbiome is disrupted by harsh cleansers and other abrasive skincare products, this discontent can result in breakouts,” explains Bowe.

The short version: If your bod’s natural bacteria balance inside or outside of the skin gets thrown out of whack, your skin suffers . But when your body’s “good” bacteria is healthy and thriving, Bowe says that’s when your skin will look its best.

Thousands Of Bacterium Species Live On The Skin And They Counterbalance Each Other And Co

The traditional acne therapy employes 2 key strategies: first, the decontamination of the skin and extermination of Propionibacterium acnes. Poor little buddies are cleansed away from the skin with antiseptics, such as benzoyl peroxide and various acids, mostly salicylic acid. This would of course cause death and destruction on massive scale of all other, friendly or neutral civilian bacteria, and the improvement was usually short-lived and followed by a new flare of acne. The second acne treatment strategy is fairly recent: the use of retinol and its derivatives helps control the activity of 5-alpha-reductase, eventually decreasing the sebum production. Less sebum produced means worsening of Propionibacterium acnes living conditions, so acne-inducing processes slow down and inflammation eases. However, retinoids irritate the skin and significantly reduce its barrier functions, while their anti-acne effect is not necessarily permanent.

The newest strategy is based on the restoration of the skins micro-community, or the ecoflora as microbiologists put it. The beneficial bacteria take control over acne bacterias hysterical multiplication, drive away harmful bacteria species, and produce anti-inflammatory agents, effectively suppressing not only the overzealous 5-alpha-reductase, but inflammatory enzymes as well. The skins ecoflora is restored by more or less the same solutions that people now use to rebalance their gut bacteria: prebiotics and probiotics.

Children And Infant Studies

Probiotics for Acne (HOW I CLEARED MY SKIN) Difference Between Prebiotics and Probiotics!

This first up, a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, and perfect example of why you shouldnt expect improvement taking whatever probiotic species willy-nilly.

The study found that infants taking L. rhamnosus had a reduced risk of developing eczema compared to the placebo control after two years. However, the same was not found with using Bifidobacterium animalis. In fact, B. animalis had no effect on eczema at all.

Cooler yet, some of the same researchers in the above study decided to do a followup a couple years later. By then those 2 year old babies were now 4 year old children, and had completely stopped using probiotic for a full 2 years.

They found that the children who supplemented with L. rhamnosus in the first two years of their life, had a significantly lower chance of developing eczema than the control or those that used B. animalis instead. Other studies have had similar findings.

And one of the last children studies followed 14 different cases of patients between the ages of 8 to 64 month old, who had resistant eczema that wasnt responding to standard therapy. Almost every single participant had little to no symptoms after 6 months of supplementing with L. rhamnosus lysate. The photos speak for themselves.
