How Does Masterclass Gift Work
The experience begins the moment you log in, whether you receive MasterClass Gift or purchase it yourself. Unless you have a specific course in mind, it might be tough to choose between amazing courses. Sorting through the possibilities until you find a suitable match is straightforward once youve limited it down to one of the nine categories.
When you click on a class, youll be taken to a short video clip as well as a course description that contains the lesson plan. Once you select a class, you will be prompted to fill out the following brief questionnaire:
After all, details are filled you will be directed to Classes which are divided into many basic components:
- Each chapter begins with an instructional lecture video. These films are intended to provide students a starting point for understanding what the lesson is about.
- Along with the instructional videos, students may follow along in a downloadable PDF instructors guide, which includes tasks that students can submit to our community for feedback and critique.
- Students receive the majority of their comments from their peers in our private student group, where we will also broadcast the most recent community events.
You can then watch the videos in order or jump around. The average length of a video is 10 minutes, and most courses have 20 lessons. Students who enroll in Masterclass with an Annual Membership will have unrestricted access to all lessons in all classes until they cancel.
How Much Does Masterclass Cost
MasterClass offers only one plan type: an all-access pass that costs $180 per year. With an all-access pass, you can watch the entire catalog of content at any time on any device. As of this writing, there are 138 courses.
Previously, MasterClass offered a monthly subscription and also sold access to any single class for a one-time fee but it no longer does. Is there a free trial of MasterClass? Nope. There is a 30-day money back guarantee, but you still have to lay down a credit or debit card and get charged $180, and only then if you’re unsatisfied you can request a refund. It would be nice to see at least one other option than $180 per year or bust.

How Are The Classes Formatted
If you hadnt guessed by now, the classes are presented in video format. Each video is usually a few minutes long, up to around 15 minutes.
This keeps it digestible and easy to get through, while also forcing each video to only contain one or two themes, which keeps you from getting overwhelmed.
It does vary because some of the videos are more practical, while others are more theory-based.
There are also workbooks that act like extras or learning aids and are actually pretty useful.
Ive been through a lot of courses in the past that had workbooks that I never even bothered looking at for more than a few seconds.
The video player is great, and its easy to logout and come back later and resume where you had left off.
This isnt particularly revolutionary if youve taken online classes before, but its still a nice touch and worth mentioning.
Tom Morello Teaches Electric Guitar
A remarkably in-depth masterclass that is a mine of information for experienced electric guitar players, butone that is not so advanced that beginners will not benefit from taking it too.
Tom Morello is an excellent teacher. He is an innovative and extremely experienced guitar player, who clearly loves what he does. His enthusiasm for his subject is contagious.
He provides you with examples of how he builds riffs, finger exercises, and blues scales. If you want to create your own tracks this guitar course provides you with details of the right way to go about doing that.

David Axelrod and Karl Rove, men from opposing ends of the political spectrum, are a fantastic dynamic. I personally loved learning about campaign storytelling and how to craft a great message.
This MasterClass really makes the political drama come alive and is so electrifying in places that youll want to run for office in some capacity whether or not you had plans to do so.

Neil Degrasse Tyson: Scientific Thinking
I couldnt not do Neils class. Ive loved Neil since high school, when I checked out one of his captivating texts about space .
Im very pleased to say that Neil Degrasses class lives up to the books of his I read in school. Its awesome.
While he definitely teaches about the scientific method, he devotes a great deal of time to how we think, make errors, and learn. Hes always been a devotee of skepticism, and he certainly doesnt skip that here .
The communication aspect of his class makes for a slightly uncomfortable marriage with the scientific thinking component, but I understand that a huge part of advancing science is communicating new results in an effective manner.
Having someone be receptive to your findings is critical, and Neil teaches you ways to build a positive reception in your audience.
He has 13 lessons, so theres definitely a good deal of content for you to explore. Its not as hands-on as some of the other classes , and the workbook is a little small without homework activities, so its best to think of this as a learning seminar as opposed to a more typical masterclass.
Still, his lessons on skepticism, biases, and belief systems are wonderful, and definitely worth your time and energy.
Many people ask which is better out of MasterClass or Skillshare.
The thing is:
Theyre completely different. Skillshare focuses more on hard skills, like writing, online marketing, and more.

In 2019, Masterclass released this course with David Lynch. Each lesson in this Masterclass averages between fifteen and twenty-five minutes in length.
Although Im not a filmmaker, I was interested to hear where Lynch, director of films like Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive, gets his ideas from.
David Lynchs Masterclass is shot in a film studio that looks a little like one of his offbeat films .
Lynch is an upbeat teacher with an intriguing insight into the creative process. The Masterclass is broken up with snippets from his films and TV shows and art.
He covers topics like:
- Creativity and the Writing Process
- Staying Through to Your Ideas
Verdict: David Lynch Teaches Creativity and Film had less downloadable materials and PDFs than other Masterclasses.
However, I particularly enjoyed his bonus lecture about the power of transcendental meditation, even if he was short on specifics about how to get started with this practice.

Jimmy Chin Teaches Adventure Photography
Youve probably come across the name Jimmy Chin if you watch the various rock climbing documentaries on Netflix Jimmy has documented many famous climbers over his years as a photographer.
This MasterClass moves at a different pace to the Annie Leibovitz one. Instead of a slow lead-in, were thrown straight into a shoot with Jimmy hanging off a cliff face with his camera and the talent dangling precariously in front of him.
Theres a fair bit of gear talk too which will please many of us, with Jimmy explaining his various equipment choices to remain agile in potentially dangerous situations, while still having the versatility to capture his shot.

Im not afraid to say that I wasnt blown away by Jimmy Chins photography. I believe that any talented photographer could produce a similar quality of image, if not ones that are better.
Jimmys success appears to have come from niching down on a very specific form of photography one which requires as much expertise in the particular sport as it does in photography, as well as forging strong relationships with his subjects, and clients.
Being able to position yourself on a cliff face in just the right position to capture the subject requires years of experience, and this particular MasterClass gives a great insight into Jimmys expert process.

Bill Collins Teaches Reading And Writing Poetry
I hadn’t heard of Collins till enrolling and it took me a few weeks to get through all twenty video lessons. I learnt he wanted to be a poet since high school and began his career by following around with words.
I also enjoyed hearing about Collins’ journey as a poet over the years. He offers some good advice about rejection and what to do when you finally get published.
