Should You Use Probiotics For Your Vagina

You know probiotics can be good for your gut, but does your vagina need one too? You might think so, based on probiotic marketing these days. Probiotics are in everything from drinks to pills and powders, and in many cases, are being promoted as a means of improving your vaginal health.

Women seem to be listening, says Dr. Caroline Mitchell, assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School. Vaginal probiotic supplements are hugely popular. This includes both probiotic pills and suppository capsules that are inserted into the vagina using an applicator.

But evidence of effectiveness is scant. There is almost no evidence that these have benefit for vaginal health. The studies are mostly poorly done and dont adhere to rigorous reporting standards, even if they are randomized trials, says Dr. Mitchell. But that hasnt stopped companies from promoting products for that purpose.

However, while todays vaginal probiotic products should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism, that may change as scientific knowledge builds. Meanwhile, heres whats known and unknown about probiotics and your vaginal health.

How To Use Probiotics To Treat A Yeast Infection

Probiotics are microorganisms in supplements and food that can benefit your health. Microorganisms naturally live on and in our bodies, helping with digestion, fighting illness, and making vitamins.

Probiotics may support health by helping to maintain a balanced microbiome and supporting your immune system.

Lactobacillus is a friendly bacteria that lives in human digestive, genital, and urinary systems. Its also found in fermented foods like yogurt.

The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates Lactobacillus as possibly effective for treating vaginal bacterial overgrowth, but possibly ineffective at treating vaginal yeast infections.

While ingesting Lactobacillus in supplements or yogurt may not prevent yeast infections for folks who take antibiotics, vaginal probiotic suppositories do improve symptoms when used with conventional treatment.

Probiotic Choices For Yeast

Find out what causes vaginal yeast infection and discover what other lifestyle factors increase your risk of getting yeast vaginitis.

Remove the food source. Keep your sugar intake right down. Try some of the âcandida dietsâ that abound on the net.

Unfortunately, many women self-diagnose and get it wrong. This isnât really surprising when you realize how often even doctors get it wrong too. If you use/take an anti-fungal and your vaginal infection is not caused by yeast, then anti-fungal treatments wonât work.

Worse, youâre possibly breeding those Candida fungi that were living quite peacefully into a resistant strain. Then treatment wonât work if later you do get a vaginal yeast infection. So far, the Candida strains found in the vagina have shown very little sign of becoming resistant,3 but many of the strains found in oral yeast infections have3 so it is probably only a matter of time.

Vaginal infections cover several different infections, all of them annoying, irritating and sometimes difficult to treat. It is estimated that over one billion women around the world suffer from non-sexually transmitted urogenital infections such as vaginal yeast infection.4

    Yeast Infections

About 75% of women will experience at least one vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime and almost half will have repeat infections.1 They occur with an overgrowth of candida, or yeast, in the vagina thats typically kept in check by the good bacteria in healthy vaginal flora.

    Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common vaginal infection in women ages 15-44. In BV there is an overgrowth of certain bacteria causing an imbalance of the good and non-beneficial bacteria normally found in a womans vagina. 1

The Battle of Yeast and Bacteria

Though separate conditions, the nature of yeast infections and BV can often lead to a seemingly never-ending cycle between the two. Typically, it goes something like this:

  • BV, a bacterial vaginal infection, is often treated with antibiotics.
  • The antibiotics kill off the infectionright along with all the good bacteria necessary for a healthy vaginal microbiome.
  • Without the good bacteria keeping balance in order, the yeast takes over triggering a yeast infection.
  • The yeast infection is treated, upsetting the vaginas pH balance once again giving bacteria an opportunity for overgrowth.
  • And the cycle can continue until balance is restored.
  • This phenomenon isnt limited to BV and Yeast Infections. UTIs, another bacterial infection commonly treated with antibiotics, and yeast infections follow a similar pattern.

Some of the common symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include severe itching in the vaginal area. Further, you may experience some form of irritation which includes some swelling and redness in the vaginal area.

Vaginal discharge is usually a normal occurrence in females, but some form of discharge may actually be an alarm of a vaginal yeast infection. This will be is you have a discharge that is thick or watery but odorless.

The best way to choose a probiotic for vaginal health is to talk to your doctor. They can help you select the right product based on your needs.

There are many different types of probiotics on the market, so it’s important to do your research before purchasing one. Probiotics come in different forms, such as capsules, tablets, powders, and liquids.

When it comes to probiotics for vaginal health, look for products that contain Lactobacillus. This is a type of bacteria that helps keep the vagina healthy by maintaining its pH balance.

Probiotic Combination Therapies For Yeast Infections

While taking probiotics in lieu of antifungal medication is not yet supported by science, some other research suggests that women with vaginal yeast infections may benefit from probiotic combination therapies.

For instance, a prospective study published in July 2012 in the journal Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics found that a mixture of bee honey and yogurt applied to the vagina may help cure yeast infections in pregnant women.

Similarly, a study published in November 2015 in the Global Journal of Health Science found that a vaginal cream of honey and yogurt was comparable in efficacy with clotrimazole vaginal cream for yeast infections.

Additionally, a clinical trial found that a certain probiotic capsule, when combined with conventional antifungal medication, can help provide a long-term cure against recurrent yeast infections.

Still, more research is needed to fully reveal the benefits of these alternative therapies.

Why Take Probiotics For Vaginal Health

There are a few reasons why women should take probiotics for vaginal health:

    · To prevent and treat vaginal infections, like bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections.

    · To balance the good and bad bacteria in your vagina.

    · To reduce the symptoms of vaginal infections and other vaginal issues.

    · To maintain good vaginal health.

In 2009, the Cochrane Review by pointed out insufficient evidence in favor or against the recommendation of probiotics for the treatment of BV and emphasized the need for well-designed randomized controlled trials with standardized methodologies and larger patient numbers. To evaluate whether an oral probiotic food supplement supports the maintenance or restoration of a normal vaginal microbiota during pregnancy, a randomized, placebo-controlled, triple-blind, parallel group trial has been conducted in three hundred twenty pregnant women. Results of this study suggest that probiotics are an easy way to establish intervention in the primary prenatal care of pregnant women whereas its usefulness in preventing of preterm delivery remains unclear .

Moreover, for recurrent VVC a recent Cochrane review compared conventional antifungal drugs used as single treatment to probiotics as adjuvant therapy for enhancing short-term clinical and mycological cure and the relapse or recurrence of episodes over time. Adjunctive treatment does not seem to influence the rate of long-term clinical cure, long-term mycological cure, serious, and non-serious side events. To date, due to the low quality of data available, the authors conclude that there is poor evidence for the use of probiotics either as adjuvants to conventional antifungal drugs or used alone for the therapy of VVC in nonpregnant women.

    How Do I Store Probiotics

Best Probiotics For Women: Yeast Infection & UTIâs

Its important to store probiotics properly to ensure that they remain effective. Probiotics should be stored in a cool, dark place like a refrigerator. Most probiotics will come with specific storage instructions, so be sure to follow these.

When buying probiotics, its also important to look for the expiration date. Probiotics can lose their effectiveness over time, so its important to buy fresh probiotics and use them before they expire.

Fortunately, scientists have identified specific species of bacteria that are especially effective at protecting vaginal and intestinal microflora, providing resistance against perturbations that may lead to overgrowth with decidedly unfriendly species of yeast and bacteria.

Generally, these protective bacteria are classified as acid-loving, or acidophilus bacteria. Clinical trials have shown that bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus, in particular, when consumed orally daily are especially effective at establishing and maintaining healthy vaginal microflora.

Commonly found living in harmony within the vagina, studies have shown that certain species of Lactobacillus are capable of inhibiting the growth of pathogenic organisms such as Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida albicans. These same friendly acid-making bacteria may also inhibit unwelcome fungi from adhering to the lining of the vagina, which prevents yeast infection.15 A recent randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study found that women with high numbers of Lactobacilli in the vagina were far less likely to harbor yeast.16

    Which Vitamin Deficiencycauses Fungal Infection

What are the most common types of vitamins and what is the cause of fungal infection?

Most people donât really know what a vitamin is, and most of them donât even know what vitamin deficiency is.

The simple answer to these questions is not very easy to grasp but one can derive some knowledge by studying some basics.

Vitamin is an element that helps the body to convert foods into energy.

This conversion is known as metabolism and it happens in the bloodstream through the bloodstream.

The body uses food energy for the synthesis of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and other substances.

Vitamins help the body to repair and regenerate cells by synthesizing the proteins and fats.

When your body is deficient in certain vitamins or you are deficient in vitamins and there is no way you can get your required amount of vitamins.

You can develop fungal infection or body immune deficiency syndrome .

Bipolar disorder is the most common psychiatric disease that is caused by vitamin deficiency in patients.

And it is also related to the use of drugs.

Vitamin deficiency can happen if you are exposed to elements that are harmful to the body like the sun and ultraviolet rays of the sun for a long time.

For example, the antioxidants in your diet like vegetables, fish, fruits.

And some cold cuts are some examples of this kind of food that you should eat regularly so that you are able to get the required amount of nutrients in the food.

How Do You Know If You Have Systemic Candidiasis

Fungal overgrowth that is outside of the gut environment can, in some ways, be easier to detect and identify. A good example of this is thrush which has give-away signs such as a thick discharge in the case of vaginal thrush, and a white coating to the tongue and mouth in the case of oral thrush. Other fungal infections such as athletes foot also have obvious signs to look out for. Infections such as these can be linked to systemic Candidiasis, or they can just be stand-alone, localised infections. Having thrush or athletes foot certainly doesnt mean that you have systemic Candida, but having systemic Candida does raise the chance of developing localised yeast infections.

So, a propensity towards yeast infections at different body sites can be one possible symptom of Candidiasis. However, due to the many toxins that Candida produces, there are a whole raft of other possible symptoms that can occur. In fact, many health conditions are thought to have their basis in Candida overgrowth, including mental health disorders6 such as anxiety, confusion , chronic fatigue syndrome7, acne/eczema, headaches, skin rashes, allergic symptoms, joint pain15 and many other chronic health complaints.

The mycotoxins that the yeasts excrete can even cross the blood-brain barrier, which is how the mental symptoms such as confusion and anxiety can develop.

Patients And Methods Of Delivery And Recovery Of The Lactobacilli

Each morning and last thing at night for 14 days, ten women, asymptomatic for infection but with a recent history of urogenital infection, swallowed 3 ml probiotic suspension. The patients provided urine and vagina swabs pre-treatment and 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after commencement of the therapy. The swabs were suspended in 1 ml saline and cultured on MRS agar. Morphotypes of lactobacilli, particularly those suspected of being strains L. rhamnosus GR-1 and L. fermentum RC-14 were further subcultured, Gram-stained and ribotyped. The ribotyping consisted of restriction of the genome with endonucleases, separation of the DNA by agarose gel electrophoresis and hybridization with rRNA from E. coli as described in full previously . The fingerprints characteristic of L. rhamnosus GR-1 and L. fermentum RC-14 were identified. Controls consisted of a range of ATCC type strains of Lactobacillus, markers and samples without lactobacilli. Each patient was asked to record any side effects such as bladder or vaginal irritation, discharge, or intestinal upset, and to inform us of any use of antimicrobial agents for infections occurring during the study.
