You may find that as well as helping to relieve constipation symptoms, probiotics may temporarily increase certain digestive conditions.

When you start taking probiotics, you may find that you have more gas, bloating and occasional stomach cramping. It is not known why probiotics cause gas or may result in stomach pain. However, these side effects of probiotics are only experienced by a few people.

For example, a study from 2015 found that, although most people benefit from probiotics, a few people noticed excessive flatulence and bloating. However, after a week or so, your digestion should adjust to the probiotics and you should no longer have side effects from taking probiotics.

Is It Safe To Take Probiotics During Pregnancy

Most experts say that it is perfectly fine to take probiotics during pregnancy because your baby gets their first dose of healthy bacteria from you when they are born through breast milk or vaginal delivery.

Your gut health will be directly related to how well your own digestive system and immune system are operating, which means that you need to take care of yourself during pregnancy.

How Can Probiotics For Constipation Help

Probiotics, or good bacteria, are bacteria species that we consume for their health benefits. Probiotics are capable of improving the health of your gut microbiome and can fight harmful microorganisms [6

Research shows that the beneficial bacteria in probiotic supplements can help with chronic constipation. Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have shown that probiotics:

  • Significantly improve stool frequency [10

As a result of balancing gut microorganisms, probiotics also reduce inflammation .

Probiotics Can Cause Diarrhea

Probiotics for constipation and gut health in children and young people with Down’s syndrome

Studies have shown how helpful probiotics can be for infectious diarrhea, traveler’s diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and C diff diarrhea. However, they can cause diarrhea in some people.

This negative side effect should pass as your body gets fully adjusted to the new probiotics. In the long run, probiotics should not cause diarrhea. If you have diarrhea that lasts greater than 2 weeks while taking a probiotic then stop taking probiotics.

Considerations When Taking Probiotics For Constipation

If youre considering taking probiotics to increase stool frequency, its also helpful to evaluate any and all other factors that might be contributing to the problem.

Is there anything else you can do to influence your digestive health along with taking probiotics? If medically appropriate, see if you can:

  • Up your water intake.
  • Consume more soluble fiber that will act as prebiotics for your good bacteria.
  • Increase your activity level.
  • Ask your doctor if any medications youre taking can be contributing to constipation and if there is an alternative.

While probiotics are safe for an overwhelming majority of people, those who are dealing with critical health conditions should consult a probiotic-literate healthcare professional for medical advice.

Finally, sometimes people feel temporary side effects when they begin taking a probiotic supplement. Gas, bloating, and general stomach upset can occur as the gut microbiota rebalances.

This generally subsides after a few days but if it doesnt, here are a few tips:

  • While its best to take probiotics on an empty stomach, you could try taking your supplement with food while your body adjusts.
  • Reduce the amount youre taking and gradually increase the dose.
  • Make sure there are no ingredients in the supplement you might be allergic to, like gluten or dairy.
  • Consider trying a product that contains different strains of bacteria.

The Differences Between Probiotics Prebiotics And Synbiotics

Probiotics contain friendly living microbes, whereas prebiotics do not. Prebiotics contain non-digestible food particles that support the growth of friendly microbes already living in your intestines. Good sources of prebiotics include bananas, berries, flax, onion, garlic, artichokes, leeks, legumes, and whole grains. Synbiotics combine both a probiotic and a prebiotic.

Thruve

Studies show that within a month or two of regular probiotic use, you should start to feel better and experience the benefits. Most people taking supplements or high-quality probiotics report feeling the benefits of probiotics within hours of taking them.

A study held with participants infected with H. pylori bacteria found that their antibiotic-induced diarrhea and nausea symptoms improved within the first two weeks. Researchers gave the participants a daily probiotic drink for a month in another study on constipation. By the first few weeks, their gut health had improved drastically.

When it comes to weight management, the results of probiotics may take much longer to be effective. Combined supplements or probiotic drinks and a low-fat, reduced-calorie diet can promote gut health and weight loss.

Why Is Probiotics Important

A probiotic is an improved form of bacteria. Most people have trillions of bacteria in their gut. This is called the microbiome. The microbiome is critical for the health of your body. Probiotics are live bacteria that help promote the health of the microbiome. This improves overall health and wellness. When we talk about probiotics we are really talking about specific bacteria such as lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria. These bacteria help improve your digestion and digestive health. Lactic acid bacteria help improve the digestion of your food, and can help fight off bad gut bacteria and viruses that could be causing problems with digestion and gut health. Bifidobacteria help enhance the health of the GI tract and provide your body with some protective benefits. They are also used for the manufacture of other beneficial compounds such as vitamin K2. Research suggests that probiotics may help with allergies and eczema.

Probiotics May Also Prevent Fatal Gut Disease

A 2014 review by Cochrane found that probiotics could be particularly useful in a hospitalâs neonatal intensive care unit. Adding beneficial bacteria to nutritional regimens reduced the risk of a fatal gut disease that primarily afflicts preterm infants.

Ultimately, extensive material that can be found in reputable medical sources and many studies have, in fact, established that taking probiotics can help prevent digestive problems. Constipation is included in the list of conditions treatable through proper probiotic consumption. Nonetheless, do seek a consultation with your medical doctor before starting any dietary plan targeting any medical condition.

We have mentioned the main bacterial strains below. Make sure the probiotic supplement you choose has at least 2 of these strains.

Signs Your Probiotics Are Working

Youll know when your probiotics are actually working. Youll start to feel better as your system fights off those harmful agents trying to wreak havoc on you. As they continue to work, they not only fight off the bad guys, but they also retain the good bacteria that you already have. Both the probiotics and the good bacteria team up to continue the war against invasive toxins.

If youve enjoyed relatively good health most of your life, you may not notice any immediate changes when you first take a probiotic. However, you will start to notice a difference right after the first few weeks. One is that you will begin to notice that you are catching far fewer colds than you used to. Plus, you may see improvements in other areas as well. Common skin conditions such as certain rashes or eczema may begin to clear up. You may even notice far fewer outbreaks of acne as the bad bacteria make their one-way exit. This is how youll know that those probiotics are working with the good bacteria to restore your system.

Probiotics And Your Poo

Ill be honest. What youre about to read will not give you crystal clear answers about your digestive problems. It will, however, help you understand probiotics, where to get them from and how they can relieve constipation.

Constipation means struggling to go to the toilet, or struggling to go enough. Frequency, consistency and difficulty are the three components of your bowel movements that tell you whether youre constipated or not. Constipation can happen to anyone at any stage in life, and its more common than you think.

While there are many factors that could be causing your constipation, lets talk about one of the most important ones: your gut flora. Gut flora are all the different kinds of bacteria that live in your gastrointestinal tract. Theres a lot of them to talk about. In fact, if you were to count up all the cells in your body, the number of bacterial cells in your GI tract is about 10 times that amount. Thats like having 9 people worth of bacterial cells living in your gut alone!

Scared? Dont be. These little workers are doing you a great service.

The gut flora are permanent residents of your GI tract, and although exactly what they do is still a mystery, we do know that they provide multiple health benefits. As youre digesting food, sitting at your desk, sleeping, traveling and going about your life, your gut flora is hard at work helping you manage inflammation, improve your brain functions and keep your poo in check.

Complications Of Chronic Liver Disease/hepatic Encephalopathy

Luminal microbiota play an important role in the pathogenesis of both spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and hepatic encephalopathy. Ammonia produced by gut bacteria is believed to play a key role in hepatic encephalopathy. Antibiotics are employed in clinical practice to reduce severity or frequency of both these chronic liver disease complications. Lactulose, a mainstay of therapy, is a prebiotic for lactobacilli which can limit bacterial ureases.

The role for probiotics in these disorders is an area of ongoing investigation. Treatment of hepatic encephalopathy with lactobacillus acidophilus was studied as early as 1965. More recently, Liu and colleagues offered a probiotic and prebiotic mixture to 97 patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy and observed a reduction in ammonia levels and improvement in encephalopathy. Another group found that a yogurt-based probiotic supplement significantly improved quantitative measurements of minimal hepatic encephalopathy in nonalcoholic cirrhotics. The latter group is now completing a more comprehensive trial using the probiotic LGG in a similar patient cohort.

Society guidelines and expert consensus panels do not currently support a recommendation of probiotic use for any chronic liver disease associated condition.
