How To Prevent Reflux And Gerd In Babies
Not surprisingly, how to prevent it is just sort of the reverse of the triggers and how to get it, which means optimize your gut flora. Theres a study that I just read called Can Nutritional Modulation of Maternal Intestinal Microbiota Influence the Development of the Infant Gastrointestinal Tract? Translationcan what a mom eat improve the gut flora of her baby? The short answer was a resounding yes. They went through all these different mechanisms for how a mom changing her diet actually directly impacts the gut flora of her baby. So thats number one, is making sure that mom is doing everything that she can to optimize her gut health. I talk a lot about that in my book, Your Personal Paleo Code which is going to be relaunched in paperback as The Paleo Cure at the end of this year. Theres another free eBook on my website thats all about gut health. You can get some tips there if youre new.
Then, of course, mom needs to avoid any of her own food intolerances. If youre gluten intolerant, you obviously dont want to be eating gluten. If youre dairy intolerant, you dont want to be eating that. Then you would obviously want to remove those foods from your diet, to prevent any problems from occurring with the baby.
What Is Known About The Relationship Between Probiotics And Colic
The available scientific evidence to date consists largely of small, preliminary studies. Most were conducted among breastfeeding infants who had colic symptoms for at least three days a week for at least two weeks.
The main findings showed:
- That giving the babies a daily dose or multiple doses of Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 seemed to reduce crying in infants.
- That giving the babies a daily dose of Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 seemed to reduce crying and irritability in breastfed infants with colic symptoms, but not among formula-fed infants with colic symptoms.
- That giving the babies a daily dose of Lactobacillus reuteri seemed to improve infantile colic symptoms when compared with no treatment, simethicone , or placebo . However, this study included only 86 infants. Moreover, it was unclear whether the active ingredient in the probiotic product contributed to its effectiveness.

- Bone mineral content appeared to increase over time among infants who received Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938, but it did not change among infants who did not receive treatment. However, this study included only 24 infants.

Deep Breathing For Acid Reflux
Beyond taking probiotics for reflux, there are a couple other ways you can help yourself manage this condition. Lets discuss those.
Your gut and your brain are connected, which means they talk to each other constantly. This explains why uncontrolled anxiety, depression, and stress can lead to an increase in GERD symptoms. Not dealing effectively with these conditions also makes it difficult for your body to heal and respond well to reflux treatment.
One simple strategy that can calm your mind and also help improve your GERD symptoms over time is diaphragmatic breathing.
To familiarize yourself with deep breathing, you can lay on the floor with a book on top of your belly. Breathe in deeply and you should see the book rise up from your stomach. What youre trying to avoid is breathing from your chest. Now, simply lay there and continue breathing deeply for a few minutes.
One of my favorite recommendations to clients is to incorporate a deep breathing practice at mealtime to help relax their body before its time to digest. To do this, they take 1-2 minutes before eating their food to sit down, relax, and breathe deeply. Bonus point for having your food in front of you so that you can smell it this gets the digestive juices flowing.
I have found this practice to be incredibly effective for just about all my digestive health clients, but especially those who deal with reflux.

When To Introduce Probiotics To Your Baby
Probiotics dont have any harmful effects on babies, so they can be introduced to them from an early age. But children whose diet consists of breast milk only, dont need them. Its important to start a solid food diet for introducing probiotics to the babies. The exposure of the child to the environment is higher when he/she is introduced to solid food.
If your babies are given antibiotics constantly, then probiotics can be introduced to them earlier. Antibiotics generally remove the bacteria that have colonized the gut, which makes the intestinal tract gullible to bacteria attacks and infections.
Data Collection And Collation
All study participants will be assigned a study ID. Electronic data will be stored in a secure password-protected database. All paper data collected will be stored at the site, and only the study team will have access to the data. The study results will be independently analysed at the end of the study. No interim analysis is planned. The GM and metabolomics data detected from stool samples will be analysed by the Key Laboratory of Dairy Biotechnology and Engineering, Ministry of Education. All records that contain names or other personal identifiers referring to a specific volunteer, such as ID number and informed consent forms, will be stored separately from the study records. The database will be password protected by the data management team .

Best Overall: Whole Food Sources
Food sources should be your number one go-to when adding probiotics to your diet. You gain all the nutritional benefits â vitamins, minerals and fiber â in addition to the probiotic benefits.
Probiotic food sources are typically labeled with wording like “contains active live cultures.” They include:

Tongue Tie Revision May Get Rid Of Baby Reflux
When scouring the internet for solutions to infant reflux or colic, did you see a photo of a wailing, tongue-tied baby with the words TONGUE TIE MIGHT = REFLUX in bright, eye-catching letters?
No? Me neither.
But, boy would that be useful. When a baby has atongue-tie, the bottom of the tongue is tethered to the floor of the mouth. You can read more about it through the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Ultimately, a tongue-tie can weaken your babys latch and lead to swallowing massive amounts of air, otherwise known as aerophagia . Besides a loose or shallow latch, some telltale signs of tongue-tie include a clicking sound while feeding, stuffiness in the morning, and reflux.
So, its worth looking in to.

Can Digestive Enzymes Help With Acid Reflux?
There are millions of people struggling with the stomach pain associated with acid reflux. This issue has caused millions of people to use every medicine available from proton pump inhibitors to H2 blockers to try and find relief. Studies suggest roughly 30 percent of people will have some type of heartburn associated with Gerd or Acid Reflux.
The problem with traditional prescription medications is that while they help treat the symptoms of acid reflux, Gerd and heartburn. They dont fix the problem permanently. These medications are typically prescribed for short term use, however once the body adapts to the presence of these medications in the body over prolonged periods of time the rebound acid effect comes into play when they are stopped. This causes the stomach to overreact and produce double the amount of acid you had previously, thus creating further acid reflux side effects. People often ask whats causing my heartburn? I took the Proton Pump Inhibitor for the full 14 day course. In some cases traditional medicine will need to be combined with healthy eating and premium digestive enzyme supplements.
There are several natural ways to eat healthy in combination with a premium digestive supplements. Here are 5 great ways to reduce acid reflux symptoms.
Why Give Your Baby A Probiotic Supplement
Babies in the womb have a sterile gut until they are born. Then, bacteria are naturally introduced to a babys gut through vaginal birth, the breastmilk or formula they drink, and the foods they eat. These good bacteria are an important part of digesting foods, extracting nutrients, and helping the body function well.
Illnesses, unhealthy foods, and medications like antibiotics may affect the healthy development of a babys gut.
Probiotics are a seamless and effective way to support the development of your babys gut flora. They become particularly useful if your baby was born by cesarean, had antibiotics, or if you are not breastfeeding. These factors may disrupt the diversity of bacteria in your babys gut, which can negatively impact their long-term health.
Clinical evidence suggests probiotics may help:
- Increase healthy gut bacteria, especially after taking antibiotics
- Reduce the risk of diarrhea associated with taking antibiotics
- Reduce symptoms of baby colic
- Reduce reflux and constipation
- Decrease symptoms associated with eczema
Most studies show that the health benefits of taking probiotics only last as long as youre actively taking them.

Scientific Research On This Condition
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants are exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life, yet many parents find themselves supplementing with formula due to breastfeeding challenges.
Formula-feeding has been linked to an increased risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease in babies and research suggests that probiotics may offer a solution.
Gassy Baby Signs And Symptoms
All babies, of course, pass a little gas. But look for these signs and symptoms of baby gas thats more than just the usual:
- Your baby cries and is fussy for an hour or so a day. This can be a sign of a normal amount of newborn gassiness that comes with having a tiny, underdeveloped digestive system. But you should still check in with your pediatrician if it happens every day and doesnt seem to be getting better.
- Your baby seems unhappy most of the time. This can indicate that you have an especially gassy baby who needs a bit more help. Gas that causes significant upset often indicates a problem beyond normal newborn gassiness.
- Your baby isnt eating or sleeping well. Trouble with sleeping or eating can have a whole range of causes, but infant gas may be one of them, especially if there are other signs. Talk to your doctor for a proper diagnosis.
- Your baby gets red in the face when he cries and seems like he might be in pain.
- Your baby squirms as though hes uncomfortable and pulls his legs up to his chest, especially during bouts of fussiness.
Infant gas has several possible causes:
- Swallowing air when feeding or crying, which is very common and normal among new babies
- An underdeveloped digestive system, which allows food to pass through too quickly so it doesnt break down completely
- Hypersensitivities to certain types of formula or foods in Moms diet, or possibly food allergies

Which Acid Reflux Symptoms Could They Ease
A 2020 systematic review investigated the effects of probiotics on GERD. The authors looked at 13 studies of varying quality, 11 of which found that probiotics had some benefit for acid reflux. The specific benefits are below:
- One study noted improvements in reflux or heartburn.
- Five studies noted improvements in shortness of breath.
- Three studies noted a reduction in regurgitation.
- Nine studies noted improvements in other gastrointestinal symptoms, such as:
2019 study investigated the effect of probiotic supplements in adults taking the PPI esomeprazole for reflux esophagitis. Over 8 weeks, one group of participants took esomeprazole with a probiotic, while a second group took esomeprazole with a placebo.
At 12 weeks, the researchers assessed the participants with cured esophagitis. The group that had received the probiotic had lower rates of SIBO and decreased diarrhea.
A 2018 study looked at the effects of probiotics on SIBO in children with GERD. The 12-week study included 128 participants with GERD and 120 without it. The researchers divided the children with GERD into two groups. One received a PPI with probiotics, and the other received the same PPI with a placebo.
At the end of the trial, the children who took probiotics had lower rates of SIBO, compared with those who took a placebo. These lower rates were similar to those of children without GERD.
and Enterococcus faecium. Any of these may help with acid reflux.

Gerd And Probiotics: Is Their A Connection
A connection between GERD and probiotics may seem far-fetched since many people suffer with GERD and indigestion, yet only reach for medications. Those drugs for reflux focus on reducing stomach acid. Do you know what reflux is, what the causes are and what the symptoms are to know if you even need medication?
Balancing the gut flora and encouraging proper functioning of the digestive tract are where probiotics excel, so it shouldnt be a surprise that GERD and probiotics may be a lovely combination.
Researchers know that probiotics speed up gastric emptying, so there is less chance of excess acid production and reflux. Also, by balancing the flora in the small intestine and colon, there is less chance that excess bloating and gas will take place and have back up effects into the stomach. As mentioned, the goal of conventional anti-acid medications is to reduce stomach acidity. That can provide relief for the discomfort of excess stomach acid for the short-term. Reducing the pH in the stomach can, however, hinder proper digestion and set the stage for dysbiosis in the gastrointestinal tract. Probiotics work on the root cause of some forms of GERD, not just the symptoms.
Stop The Burn With Probiotics For Acid Reflux
- Probiotics can be effective for acid reflux when used as stand-alone therapy or alongside antacids.
- Probiotics for GERD may especially help those with IBS and SIBO.
- Probiotics offer benefits by restoring the gut microbiome.
- When using PPIs, probiotic supplements can improve symptom control and reduce unwanted side effects.
Reflux disorders, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease , affect nearly 20% of the general population , with many people experiencing symptoms that are resistant to conventional treatments. Fortunately, research supports that probiotic supplements are highly effective at resolving acid reflux and indigestion, offering some much needed relief.
As antacids can come with a host of unwanted side effects, such as small intestine bacterial overgrowth , it is no wonder that people are turning to alternative treatments. The success of probiotics in relieving reflux symptoms is likely due to their remarkable ability to restore the gut microbiome and speed up digestion. They improve your overall gut health and reduce your heartburn without disturbing your natural acid levels or gut flora.
Lets dive in to see if probiotics can help you resolve your acid reflux symptoms.
