Can Prebiotic Foods Help Too
Foods with prebiotic fibers can help feed the friendly bacteria in your childs gut, which is a great way to support a healthy gut!
Prebiotics are a type of fiber that we cant digest, but it feeds the beneficial gut bacteria .
Prebiotics are found in:
- Jerusalem artichokes
These are all foods that are beneficial in your childs diet.
Ive heard some myths about how because we cant digest these fibers, they get stored in our body. This is absolutely not true. The fiber will pass through the digestive system without being digested or absorbed into the body. And they do help produce healthy bowel movements!

The 10 Best Probiotics For Kids In 2021
- The 10 Best Probiotics For Kids in 2021-2022HIDE
Thousands of years ago the great Greek physician Hippocrates stated that all disease begins in the gut. Today, we have countless studies to back his claims. There are connections between immune health and our mind. Gut health is the key to our physical and mental health. The areas of wellness, as we understand, are intimately connected. What then can be more disheartening than watching as your child suffers from gastrointestinal distress?
Today, the almost negligent use of antibiotics is a root cause of GI upset. Ear nose and throat problems are very common issues that stem from poor gut flora at birth. This has happened with an increase in unnecessary cesarean births. When a child does not pass through the birth canal of its mother, the infant actually misses the first dose of probiotics. From there, for a myriad of health reasons mothers are unable to breastfeed, meaning young infants often miss essential probiotics like B. infantis among others during a very crucial developmental stage.
The good news is that Hippocrates is not coming back to haunt us, and we now, thousands of years later, have the resources to right what went wrong.
*Before starting a probiotic supplement, speak with your doctor. GI upset can be complicated and it may be necessary to avoid certain beneficial bacterial strains.
How To Flavor Plain Yogurt
I love to buy plain whole milk yogurt and to add flavor to it myself, in addition to simply serving plain yogurt plain. Here are some stir-ins that we like:

Baby Yogurt Vs Regular Yogurt
Have you seen those products marketed as baby yogurt? Is it really necessary to buy this special baby yogurt? What makes it baby yogurt anyway?
Baby yogurt is basically the same as regular yogurt. Its generally just packaged in a smaller container. A combination of marketing tactics and convenience make those little cups with a baby face so popular for busy parents. Many baby yogurts are actually sweetened with added sugar which is something your baby does NOT need.
So, whether you buy baby yogurt or just regular yogurt, the most important factor is to check ingredients to ensure you are buying the best choice for your baby.
What Are Probiotic Foods For Kids
Some foods naturally contain probiotics, or have had probiotics added to them.
The most common fermented foods that naturally contain probiotics, or have probiotics added to them, include:
- some cheeses
While fermented foods, such as sauerkraut or kimchi, contain live microbes, they are currently not classified as probiotics. These products have not been sufficiently studied for their health benefits as stipulated by the definition of probiotics.
Youll often see that a package says live cultures or active cultures instead of the word probiotics for this reason.

Probiotics For Toddler Diarrhoea
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG is one of the best probiotics for kids. Its no surprise that its often featured as one of the top 10 probiotics for kids.
Rhamnosus GG, in particular, has been very widely studied through clinical trials. This strain was first discovered by two scientists in 1985. The brand Culturelle, for example, contains rhamnosus GG and is one of the good probiotics for kids.
Whats unique about rhamnosus GG is that it can bind to the gut wall. This stops other pathogens from binding and growing. This ultimately helps prevent or reduce the risk of intestinal infection.
This makes it an excellent daily probiotic for children. Clostridium difficile or C.difficile, for example, is a type of bacterial infection that causes diarrhoea in children.
For children with this type of acute diarrhoea, Rhamnosus GG could be beneficial. Unfortunately, the scientific evidence wasnt robust enough for it to be routinely recommended during infectious diarrhoea. Instead, a yeast called Saccharomyces boulardii sounds promising.
The evidence for supplementing with rhamnosus GG is stronger in children with rotavirus and other types of infectious diarrhoea. It was particularly helpful in reducing repeated episodes. The main downside of the research is the small patient numbers.

Is Yakult A Good Alternative Compared To Yogurt For Kids
If probiotic yogurt isnt the ideal choice, what about probiotic drink supplements such as Yakult? When children are on a normal diet of solids they can have a full serving of the drink. However, if children are younger, you should dilute the drink and give your child a smaller amount. Its also worth noting that Yakult contains only one probiotic strain, which isnt sufficient in diversifying the gut microbiome. A single bottle of yakult also contains 10 grams of sugar, which is nearly half of the recommended limit of sugar per day.

Optibac Probiotics for Babies and Children may aid constipation in children up to 12 years.
Culturelle Kids daily chewable tablets are suitable for 3-12 years and may help both constipation and diarrhoea.

Probiotics For Excess Crying And Colic
One of the suggested health benefits of probiotics is in the management of infant colic. Excessive infant crying is common but can be distressing for parents especially if it persists for over 3 hours daily.
A meta-analysis and systematic review published in JAMA showed a probiotic called Lactobacillus reuteri could be worth exploring. This probiotic strain reduced the duration of crying, but only in babies who were breastfed, born at term and younger than 3 months.
A further meta-analysis in 2018 confirmed that L. reuteri may be beneficial for breastfed babies with colic, but not in formula-fed babies.

What You Should Know Before Buying Supplements For Kids
There are a few things to consider before grabbing a probiotic off the shelf.
As mentioned before, the FDA regulates some probiotics, but not all. Make sure that the probiotic is quality checked by a reputable third party company or the FDA. Next, check out the ingredients list. It should list what type of microorganisms are in the probiotic
Another thing to check for on the ingredients list is if it contains any fillers, sugars or is allergy-friendly. Many probiotics are gluten-, wheat-, milk-, peanut-, soy-, egg- free, while others are not. Choose a probiotic that, if sweetened at all, uses a naturally tooth-friendly sweetener such as xylitol.
Also, check the expiration. Anything that is expired means the organisms may no longer be alive. Many companies will guarantee the viability of the organisms until the expiration date printed on the packaging.
Probiotic supplements can be found in as a powder, liquid, pill and chewable. Parents with children who are very young may benefit from administering a probiotic via powder or liquid if the child cannot yet swallow a pill.
Within the two groups of probiotics, there are different strains. Youll see the name appear after an L. or a B.
Some common strains and what they treat include:
- Acidophilus diarrhea, digestive issues, acne
- Rhamnosus eczema, skin allergies
- Plantarum inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract
- Casei gastrointestinal support
Probiotics Foods For Kids
Before we dive into the health benefits of probiotics, lets take a look at where you can find probiotics. Probiotics are packaged as supplements but can also be found in the following fermented foods.
Yoghurt is an easy choice of probiotic food for kids. For children following a dairy-free diet, check whether probiotics have been added to the dairy-free alternative. Tempeh is a delicious soy food and a good protein alternative for kids who refuse meat.
Kefir water is another good alternative for children who need to follow a dairy-free diet. Sauerkraut and kimchi may need to be reserved for the more adventurous eaters.
The common types of live cultures in yoghurt, fermented milk and certain cheese include lactobacillus casei. Our bodies naturally contain lactobacillus casei, in our digestive system. Ill take you through the benefits of this good bacteria later.
Other probiotic strains that can be found in fermented foods include E. faecalis, L. mesenteroides, L. brevis, P. cerevisiae and L. plantarum.

Where Can You Find Probiotics
Probiotics can be found in food and via a supplement. Foods that contain probiotics include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, kombucha, pickles, and some soft cheeses. Make sure the label says live or active cultures to make sure you are getting probiotics.
The reason why many parents choose a probiotic supplement over having their child eat foods containing probiotics is not only for convenience and knowing exactly how much probiotics your child is ingesting, but because many children do not eat the above foods that contain probiotics.
Fruit Yogurt For Babies
While there is a whole market of fruit-flavored yogurts for babies and toddlers, I still prefer to mostly rely on the plain kind so we can control the amounts of added sugars. That said, these are good options too:
- Stonyfield does make some baby yogurt without added sugars and they make a plain version of their baby yogurt.
- Siggis makes a no-added sugar yogurt and yogurt tubes with lower amounts of added sugars.
- Simply Go-Gurt also has less sugar and ingredients than other similar yogurt tubes.
- Happy Family makes whole milk yogurt flavored with just fruit or fruit and veggies.
- Redwood Farms makes a nice tasting goat milk yogurt which may be easier to digest.
- Green Valley makes a delicious lactose-free yogurt.
TIP: You can also make your own Fruit on the Bottom Yogurt. Its SO easy!
