Fage Total 2% Greek Yogurt

Vegan Yogurt Face-Off Best Plant-Based Yogurt Brands of 2021!

Theres a reason Fage is one of the most popular Greek yogurts available. While its not organic, Fage is one of theif not thebest-tasting Greek yogurt available,Stephanie Middleberg, MS, RD, CDN, and founder of NYC-based health and wellness practice Middleberg Nutrition says.

Fage yogurts are also impressively high in protein, packing in 20 grams per larger-than-industry-average 7-ounce container. Just make sure you side-step flavors like honey, which can pack a massive 29 grams of sugar into your morning meal. Honey might be better than table sugar, but that doesnt mean you should eat it by the cup. We explain here in our exclusive report every added sweetener ranked by nutrition.

Stonyfield Organic Greek Whole Milk Plain

Nutrition:5.3 oz, 120 calories, 5 g fat , 95 mg sodium, 5 g carbs , 14 g protein, 20% DV calcium

We love that Stonyfield recently introduced a full-fat version to their Greek line. This carton is made with just live active cultures, and organic, non-GMO, pasture-raised milkwhich is great because organically-raised cows arent subject to the same hormone and antibiotic treatment that conventional cows are. And no antibiotics for them means no antibiotics for you! Plus, a review published in The British Journal of Nutritionfound that organic milk has an average of 50 percent more anti-inflammatory omega-3s than its conventionally-raised counterpart.

Are All Yogurts Probiotic

It depends.

Live bacterial cultures are added to milk to start the fermentation process that turns milk in to yogurt.

These fermentation bacteria are called starter cultures and Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus are the most commonly used to make yogurt.

Based on that fact, you would think all yogurt is probiotic.

I can see companies saying made with but forgetting the but we killed them all part.

Unfortunately, most regular yogurt brands are pasteurized after fermentation. The heat kills off the beneficial bacteria so there no longer probiotic.

Yogurt can contain live and active cultures as long as its not been heat treated or bacteria has been added after fermentation.

Siggis claims that its 2% low-fat yogurts contain 50% less sugar than the leading Greek yogurt, with 2-8g of sugar per serving.

Made with no artificial sweeteners, the reduced sugar line comes in 5.3oz cups of blueberry, vanilla, mixed berries, strawberry, key lime, coconut, black cherry, vanilla & cinnamon and seasonal spiced apple. 24oz cups of plain and vanilla varieties are also available, as well as packs of four in vanilla, strawberry and mixed berries flavours.

The brand has also released a line of plant-based probiotic coconut drinks in strawberry, peach and vanilla varieties. Each drink provides 8g of protein and 7g of sugar per serving.

Siggis coconut drinks joins the brands existing plant-based line, which first launched in December 2019 with yogurts made using a proprietary blend of coconut, macadamia and pea protein. The brand has also launched a larger 24oz vanilla yogurt tub.

At Siggis, we believe in using real fruit in our products instead of artificial flavours and sweeteners. We are proud to introduce a new product line with even lower sugar to further reinforce our mission of pushing sugar levels in yogurts lower, said Siggis founder, Siggi Hilmarsson.

Benefit No : Yogurt With Active Cultures May Discourage Vaginal Infections

Candida or yeastvaginal infections are a common problem for women with diabetes. In a small study, seven diabetic women with chronic candidal vaginitis consumed 6 ounces of frozen aspartame-sweetened yogurt per day .

Even though most of the women had poor blood sugar control throughout the study, the vaginal pH of the group eating yogurt with active cultures dropped from 6.0 to 4.0 . These women also reported a decrease in candida infections. The women eating the yogurt without active cultures remained at pH 6.0.

Yogurt may improve heart disease risk factors, including high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Fermented dairy intake is associated with a lower risk of plaque buildup and artery stiffness, which are linked to high blood pressure .

A study in 73,882 adults with high blood pressure determined that eating 2 or more servings of yogurt per week were associated with a 21% lower risk of stroke in men and 17% in women, compared with those who ate less than 1 serving per month .

Similarly, in a study in 1,981 healthy men, those with higher intakes of fermented dairy products had a 27% lower risk of heart disease than those with lower intakes. The study also found that non-fermented dairy was associated with a greater risk (

    How To Preserve Yogurt

This article is all about freezing yogurt, but before we go too deep into the freezer, we wanted to give you a few simple solutions to preserving yogurt without freezing it.

If youve bought a bulk-sized quantity of yogurt, simply follow these simple rules to storing it to keep it fresh for as long as possible:

  • Keep it sealed. Once the yogurt has been opened, it can and will soak up flavors and bacteria from the air very easily. If youve purchased a large container, make sure you seal the lid very carefully every time its returned to the fridge. Better yet, transfer all the yogurt to a glass container with an airtight seal.
  • If youve purchased a large container, never eat it directly from the container. Always transfer a serving size to a separate bowl to eat. Even if you dont mind sharing germs with the other members of your family, eating it straight from the container can contaminate the healthy probiotic cultures.
  • Store it in the main body of your fridge, not the door. If you havent figured it out by now, yogurt is very sensitive. Constant fluctuations of temperature as the door opens and closes is not good for the healthy bacteria in your yogurt and it will spoil much more quickly.

    Greek Nondairy Or Regular Yogurt

Greek yogurt is currently a big trend in yogurt. It differs from traditional yogurt because it is strained more times, removing some of the whey and lactose.

This gives Greek yogurt about twice as much protein as traditional yogurt and around half the carbs . Its a great option as a filling snack and for those who are lactose intolerant.

However, this means Greek yogurt is also typically higher in calories and fat and contains less calcium than traditional yogurt.

Like other types of yogurt, many brands are also filled with added sugar.

Dairy-free yogurts, such as soy or coconut yogurt, have also become popular. Because they are plant-based, they are much lower in fat than traditional yogurt and do not contain lactose.

These are ideal choices for vegans and people with lactose intolerance. However, they do not naturally contain much calcium, so be sure to check the label for a brand with added calcium and vitamin D.

Greek yogurt, nondairy, and regular yogurt can all be healthy options, but none are necessarily healthier than the others.

    What Is Probiotic Yogurt

MacNeil explains that all yogurt in Canada is made with the bacteria Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, however these bacteria are not recognized as probiotics by Health Canada.

Some yogurt manufacturers will add pre-approved probiotic strains, she explains. To be called a probiotic food, yogurt must contain at least one billion live colony-forming units of a recognized probiotic species per serving.

In order to benefit from probiotics, you need to consume at least 100 million colony-forming units each day.

There are a few other details you should look for on a yogurt label when considering which brand to purchase. MacNeill suggests looking for a yogurt with a short ingredients list, citing that less is often more.

For example, Nancys Organic plain yogurt contains just three ingredients: Organic pasteurized whole milk, organic pasteurized nonfat milk, and live yogurt cultures.

Overall, she says that yogurt should be a good source of protein without providing excess added sugars or artificial sweeteners. If you are looking to increase your protein intake, she recommends Greek yogurt, since it is strained twice and is therefore higher in protein.

The only downside to Greek yogurt, however, is that the straining process removes some of the calcium. If youre trying to increase your calcium intake, MacNeill recommends looking for a yogurt that provides at least 15% of the daily value of calcium.

Is Whole Milk Yogurt The Same As Greek Yogurt

How to Identify Good Food Probiotics

Probiotics are essentially live organisms which when consumed in sufficient quantity offer health benefits that go beyond basic nutrition. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that we can get through the food we consume. Getting a variety of probiotics regularly can help to balance the microflora in your gut, which can have several advantages such as supporting digestion and promoting overall good health.

According to the WHO , probiotic means for life.

Today, there are so many foods containing probiotics that you can choose from options such as miso, kombucha, tempeh, or kefir. Yogurt is one of the best sources of probiotics because it is made with milk that is fermented with live bacteria. Not only is yogurt an excellent source of probiotics, but it is also high in vitamins, minerals, and protein.

However, not all types of probiotic yogurt are the same and the benefits you get from the yogurt depends on the types of probiotics it contains and the amount.

At present, there are so many brands of yogurt available on the market that it is quite difficult to determine which yogurt has the most probiotics. While buying yogurt, check the labels of the yogurt brands that specify live and active cultures to ensure that it is a good source of probiotics. It is also very important to check the amount of added sugar in the yogurt because sugar can be harmful to your guts health.

What To Look For In Your Probiotic Supplement

While taking a probiotic supplement can be more effective than yogurt at introducing all that beneficial bacteria into your digestive system, keep in mind that not all supplements are created equal. Your probiotic supplement can beat yogurts probiotic benefits if you pick one that displays certain key characteristics.

The number of live bacterial strains in the supplement is obviously a key factor in its efficacy. The bare minimum amount of bacteria needed to be considered effective is 1 billion colony forming units per day. If the supplement youre considering doesnt list the number of CFUs it has, theres reason for concern: testing company ConsumerLab.com found that many of the probiotic supplements they tested that did not specify their CFUs with live bacteria numbering in just the thousands, which is far too little be effective.

The specific types of bacteria in the supplement is also important, as different strains can help with different health concerns. For example, Lactobacillus acidophilus has been shown to reduce cholesterol, while Lactobacillus plantarum has proven effective in reducing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Other strains have been shown to improve immune function, reduce inflammation, combat the effects of diarrhea, and more. Finding a supplement that has the right diversity of strains to address your particular health issues is key to getting the biggest benefit from your probiotic.
